Noting there is a thread for the east side, I thought a north west thread was needed.

--Also I am very bored at the moment waiting for dc to fall asleep, and this felt like the perfect way to spend the time.

Any other NW mumsnetters here? Let's talk schools, food, leisure....and so on Grin

Eee, tha's nobbut a nibbet, lass! Grin
I know this one! I was born in the North East but we moved to just outside Warrington when I was less than a month old. But my mum was from Oswaldtwistle and my dad was from Bradford so I heard lots of old Lancashire and Yorkshire sayings when I was growing up.

Oswaldtwistle has reminded me of all the bloody great names in the NW Grin

@dipdye there are some very fascinating names here. Took me a while to 'learn' how to pronounce a few 😂

I was told the other day, I'm saying Barrowford incorrectly..allegedly it's not barrow-ford, but more barrow-fud. I think I also said other names incorrectly for a while, like Rossendale.

Blackley is one. You pronounce it like there's no C. Blakely

Ordsall is Odsul, not Ords-all.

Broughton catches some out. They're not sure which 'ough' to use (it's Braw-tun).

Known locally as Ozzy!

Tillymintpolo · 26/01/2022 17:41

Euxton is another - pronounced Extun but people think you say it like Euston

eleanorwish · 26/01/2022 18:01

I grew up on Vimto, my favourite was Vimto milkshake. When I visit mum I can tell I'm back up North because the cafe in the nearby country park has hot vimto on the menu.

Is tripe still a northern delicacy? Our local market had a tripe stall - my dad's favourite treat!

dipdye · 26/01/2022 18:02

^.
This ones a bit niche but the old Winfields used to have two bears as characters : Ross and Dale!

Ah, nostalgic now for my childhood traipsing around there on a Sunday looking at shoes tied together with elastic!

Imissmoominmama · 26/01/2022 18:23

Quernmore- pronounced Quorma!

TheVolturi · 26/01/2022 18:47

Does anyone enjoy a dab or John Bull from the chippy?

TheVolturi · 26/01/2022 18:50

I used to live in Ossy. I started working at a hospital a few towns away, and one day went to cover on another ward. I walked in and said I'm x from the other ward and the ward manager said oh, I thought you were Australian? I said er nope, why? He said I'd heard someone say you were from Aussie 😂😂😂. Must not have heard of Ossy Mills.

TheVolturi · 26/01/2022 18:51

That was meant to be @PieOnABarm

Cookie79 · 26/01/2022 18:56

Waves to my fellow northerners. Born and raised near Rochdale, worked in Rossendale and now living on the Fylde Coast spending too much money in Booths (Love those yellow stickers though, Sunday mornings are the best for discounted eggs). I also heard a rumour that the Lytham one has a wine bar....

One street name I could never pronounce was “Well i’th Lane” - Still not sure whether it’s wellit or wellith - used to say the street that roller city was on instead (ah memories).

Starbonnet123 · 26/01/2022 19:01

Hi @Tillymintpolo and @BeQuietBrenda I'll wave to you both from Belmont rd side of the hill 👋🏻 . Love living in Bolton especially on the edge of the moors .

L40Postcode · 26/01/2022 19:01

There’s a new build estate near me called Cat i’ th' Window.

I know EXACTLY where that is!!

We looked at a house on that estate about a year ago, before we decided to stick with OHs (now "our") house and extend. Always thought it was an odd name. Also, I know the area is deemed very nice etc but it was a lot of money for not a lot of house!

I do like living so close to the moors, it's so nice to be able to drive for 15 mins and feel like I'm a world away from the hustle and bustle.
ErrolTheDragon · 26/01/2022 19:29

I'm now wondering if I've been pronouncing Rossendale wrongly for years.Confused

Notimetolive · 26/01/2022 19:36

I think some of you are fairly close to me.
Thought my local Booths was in Clitheroe, but just found out that there is one in Chorley.

I think I live fairly close to @Starbonnet123, but I can see Blackpool tower and Morecambe bay from my window ( on a clear day).

Been filming Brassic round here recently and the Coronation Street cast were filming in and around in the local pub.

Going to name change now whilst I drink my hot Vimeo.

Tillymintpolo · 26/01/2022 19:49

Hi @Starbonnet123 we should all meet up for a walk to the Pike !

Tillymintpolo · 26/01/2022 20:01

Did anyone else go up Rivington pike on good Friday ?

Starbonnet123 · 26/01/2022 20:01

Hi @Notimetolive bet you don't live far , we can see Blackpool tower when we go past blue lagoon on a good day . I feel so lucky to live here @BeQuietBrenda seeing the sunrise on my way to work looking over Manchester and the Pennines . Even though it can drizzle for a week lol

Starbonnet123 · 26/01/2022 20:03
