Hello everyone.
im thinking of joining DICT8 as a second job to get myself and family through these tough times so to speak. Is it worth doing as an evening job and weekend job as I work full time as a medical secretary. 8p a line is a bit tight especially with the rate of living at the moment. Any advice would be grateful before I sign my evening and weekends away. 🙂

Anyway feeling the proof readers are becoming ridiculous with their feedback they kept saying I should flag up if I am unsure of a pt name, one I’ve typed what it sounded like but I haven’t got time to do that. If they don’t spell it out then phonetic is what they will get. I feel they are justifying their job.

I thought the rules said we type the name phonetically .. no mention of flagging-up ... has that changed too? It's about time we had a new 'Rule Book'. If the dictator can't spell out a difficult name then surely it has to be as we hear 'phonetically .. bloody hell a letter can be full of Pronouns I have never heard of 😫

I have rejoined Dict8 after a period of working with other agencies. I'm a medical secretary in a quite niche speciality.

I've just done a weeks worth of dict8 here and there. I'm a bit Hmm at some of the feedback.

One letter was specifically about a patients eye condition. It listed a thorough examination of the eyes. I typed 'lower lid' which made perfect sense in the context of the letter. I got feedback that it was 'lower lip'!

I also got pulled for a 'serious' mistake as I didn't put the type of PEG feed a patient had in two parts of the letter... I'm sure I would have heard this additional word if it was dictated twice I maintain that it wasn't.

For 8p a line, which is what it was years ago too, it's seemingly like a hassle! I accident put two spaces after a : and got pulled for that too.

These proofreaders would be apoplectic if they saw some of the tripe that comes from some NHS secretaries I've worked with!

Seems I can't correctly type on my phone either... 😂

I know I’m a good typist and feel like you do about the feedback I get. If it does not change the context eg I typed “you shared “ and it should have been “you kindly shared”but the distortion was so awful it was inaudible, why do they bother with such petty feedback.

I agree about proof readers - my heart drops when I get an email from them. Completely forgot this week about not having a full stop after Dr ! Like it’s the worst thing in the world! Need to justify their existence - and also the use of too many paragraphs ! Am only typing as doctor dictates “new paragraph” you are damned if you do and damned if you don’t! It’s a no win situation!

@user1493458352 exactly this! It's infuriating and demoralising. I find all the bits about it being constructive quite patronising too.

My first feedback email said something along the lines of, 'we know that you are an experienced medical secretary (or you wouldn't be working with dict8!)'. I mean... should I feel like I should be kissing their feet for giving my a measly 8p per line?!

The reason I went back to Dict8 is that I can log on and work when it suits. Other agencies would ask me to commit to a certain amount of work or request it and return it within 24 hours, which just doesn't suit my life at the moment.

Thanks for that - I think my problem was that I didn’t keep the P60 from last year! Therefore the system wouldn’t let me submit the self assessment without it- I did write to them twice with details of income etc but never received a reply and now been charged £100 for delay in submitting- tried to contact by phone but no luck !! Might need to get the services of an account - hardly evading tax office of defrauding thousands of pounds! Just peanuts really !!

Ha ha I got told I didn’t create enough paragraphs in one letter, surely it’s the dictators job. What actually is enough, where’s our rule book on this. Sounds like the proof readers might be under threat only way to explain the ridiculous feedback.

Yes, some dictators also open brackets, but don't close them, say to copy to XXXX when they actually mean to address to XXXX, say new line after every sentence (whatever that means), dictate a list under a header, that appears to carry on throughout the whole of the letter with no indication where to end the list and start the body of the letter, some go straight in with what appears to be a diagnosis with no header etc etc and you're left with confused transcribers, proofreaders and the secretaries at the hospital receiving end trying to fathom it all out and squabbling amongst each other it seems. Such fun.

I'm bashing out these letters at 100 mph exactly as dictated and they can sort their own crap out at the other end and that is what 8p per line means to me now.

@Meha5a Go girl! Get as many commas, hyphens and other characters in the letter field as you can, and as little characters as possible in the note box too! 😂

@Whitestar55 😂😂I used the advised phonetic method on one name that might have used all the letters of the alphabet 😂this is where I believe I can recoup my fees for the free work that they have made me to do !!!!!! 😁

Hey guys sorry I’ve been quiet. How’s everyone getting on? I’ve just signed up to this banking app not sure if any of you have heard of it it’s called a chase. It was recommended on Martin Lewis and you get £20 instantly as soon as you sign up and so does the person who refers you. With friends and family I’ve had about £200 so far it’s so quick and easy and you can transfer it all straight into your bank. Some extra penny’s for you all even if you don’t refer anyone still £20 better in our pockets lol!

Hope you are all well.

Is anyone else having problems with Tpro this morning? The system went very slow again (like a couple of afternoons last week) so I logged out and now I cannot log back in again!! On DICT8 it is the dreaded "RTX"....

OP posts:

danblack87 · 23/05/2022 13:01

I can honestly say that I had so high expectations of work today. However, I believe RTX are the most difficult, incomprehensive, diabolical dictations we do and so, therefore, I have taken to glossing and painting my office in the hopes that something better will come along later . DEFLATED, PISSED OFF is an under-estimation of my feelings this morning. :(

Report
Whitestar55 · 23/05/2022 13:27

Is it the northern accents that are a problem with the RTX's?

Report
Gally123 · 23/05/2022 14:31

@Whitestar55 - I do not find the northern accents a problem with RTX (or when dictated from any other hospital). I find it is just general inability to dictate properly.

I find some RTXs ok and others not so. I find the northern accents easier than the southern ones most of the time.

I'm finding I have less motivation to do this transcription work lately due to the shear gruel involved now due the rise in the cost of living and DICT8's failure to increase the rate of pay. I've just begrudgingly typed a note to sec that was 5 lines long, for free of course. I've had enough, somethings got to give, but I doubt it will be DICT8 doing the giving. 😭

Report
danblack87 · 24/05/2022 02:17

@Whitestar55 : It isn't even the accents ... it's their inability to dictate properly and coherently... sentence construction = diabolical. ID - not given. He/she, him/her changes through a letter. No full stops/comma's or paragraphing ... so that leave us, where? Slated by a proof-reader for trying!!! There are some good RTX but that's like finding 'rocking horse shit' ... whoopee 1/25 'a golden nugget'.

You hit the nail on the head with yr comment “slated by a proof reader for trying”. I haven’t typed
for the last 4 days precisely for that reason, it got me down so much and I feel so much better. Back to the dreaded typing today though.
