Hello Ladies - hopefully a new thread for you... @Carosel2 @Whitestar55 @Chrissols @danblack87 @flutterby18 @wfh21 @workingfromhomenow @cherryblossom114 @Lovemydaxie @homeworkmum and anyone else I have forgotten.

just started with DICT8 but find the self assessment form daunting. Seems you have to enter all your yearly income - I have a small part time job which is taxed at source anyway and small NHS pension and as am “old” get state pension also. It seems the form is not tailor made for someone who might not be earning a great deal from this type of work. Any hints would be appreciated!!

Workingfromhomenow · 16/05/2022 08:20

@Australia25 I do my own self-assessment form. It's not too complicated really. Your employer should give you a P60 at the end of each year, which shows how much you have earned and how much tax you have paid, and the NHS pension will send you a letter too saying how much you have had from them. Perhaps the state pension also send the same (not there yet!)? Then it's just a question of totalling up what you have earned from Dict8 and entering that, remembering to put in any expenses that are wholly for working with Dict8. I believe you can claim a portion of your electricity, etc, but I've never bothered with that, although I did put a new laptop as I only use that for working for Dict8. HMRC then automatically works out how much tax you have to pay. Good luck with it.

Not having a good day - called plumber as having trouble with the toilet flushing (and also a blocked kitchen sink). He arrived unblocked the sink, flushed the loo, that worked perfectly. Put the pipes under the sink back together, flushed the loo again and left. Now I am waiting for him to return as the toilet now will not stop flushing and button seems to be broken.....

What a coincidence, I've just watched a YouTube video on how to replace a kitchen sink trap drain as thinking of having a go at changing it myself. I prefer doing stuff like than to typing, unfortunately I won't get paid for it though. Hope you get everything sorted, leaks are worrying aren't they due to the damage they can cause.

Gally123 · 16/05/2022 16:44

@Whitestar55 - I watched a Youtube video on how to replace a vacuum cleaner belt - but still not tried to do it!

I have a double drainer with lots of pipes - he had some trouble getting them disconnected. I know the theory but my worry would be connecting it all back tight enough.

He managed to fix the loo to stop it flushing, however I can still hear the tank in the roof filling. (Had a similar problem a few years ago when boiler repair trainee did not flush the loo properly and it was on constant flush for ages and then when they realised what they had done it seemed to take forever for the main tank to fill). He suggested new insides for the toilet but already had a new cistern about 15 years ago. It is an expensive make of toilet (put in by the people before me) and has always been a problem one way or another so I am thinking it might be better to have a whole new one.

My sister had a new bathroom suite and then a new loo in the cupboard under the stairs, which was a lot cheaper - and she has had the expensive one repaired a few times....

Does anyone else find sitting typing causes pain and poor circulation in their legs, or am I just getting old?

Meha5a · 17/05/2022 15:34

I just give up today. I used to love the job and time would fly but the monotonous tone of some of these doctors is sucking the joy right out of me 🥱😴

Workingfromhomenow · 17/05/2022 17:41

@Whitestar55 I don't get leg problems but if I sit typing for too long I feel it in my neck. These days I only do an hour or so at a time, and less if the tasks on offer sound dire. I don't seem to be able to get past "This is Dr/Mr (unintelligible)" these days. But I do still quite enjoy transcribing if I can just get someone who can dictate properly.

Whitestar55 · 17/05/2022 17:43

@Meha5a My motivation is waning so much lately, it feels more like an endurance test. Also really feeling the 15+ year old rate of pay versus huge inflation rate now.

Meha5a · 17/05/2022 19:27

@Whitestar55 have to agree, with everything going up and up and such poor earning power with this company over the last year, if don't put the per line up I will be looking elsewhere in the next few months.

Knitmum2022 · 17/05/2022 20:56

@Meha5a @Whitestar55 I have just joined and considering leaving already. I have been accepted onto accuro typing and the quality has been incredible. I have a 2 year old to feed and cloth and run a house as a single parent.

Meha5a · 18/05/2022 07:50

@Knitmum2022 I was a single parent too when I first started with DICT8. At that time the quality of work was excellent and the feedback was not brutal and soul destroying. We had good support from the staff and I found it a godsend. Unfortunately, in my experience, DICT8 changed some years ago (as pervious posts on here have mentioned) and things have sadly gone down hill. Work is poor quality, treatment of typists is poor and demoralising and expectation of doing free work (Note box) and the same 8 per line since the world began is really not worth the bother anymore. Maybe a purge at head office might be the solution ? I have started applying elsewhere too as I feel my experience is being taken for granted with this company.

Whitestar55 · 18/05/2022 10:16

@Meha5a Very nicely put! A friend of mine is a graphic designer, employed, but working from home, who told me about a recent job he had been given that involved text and layout for a drug information leaflet. He explained how demanding, time consuming and tiring it was as everything had to be accurate, with no room for mistakes. I thought, 'welcome to my world' the difference being that that is my world repeatedly whereas his was most likely a one-off, or at least an infrequent task, and his pay probably more than double, if not triple compared to what we earn as transcribers, and I reckon we could walk that task couldn't we ladies?

danblack87 · 18/05/2022 13:52

@Whitestar55 I get pain in my neck and right shoulder if I type to long (part of that is due from when I broke my right arm several years ago. I know I have done too much when I get cramps in my legs and feet at night. Now I take the odd half hour out and walk around the garden for a bit during the day

danblack87 · 18/05/2022 13:55

@Meha5a I am feeling the pinch too - waiting for my gas and electric bills to come in .. might have to find a part-time job at Tesco/Aldi or Wilko's (circa 12 hours a week) if the standard of dictation does not improve :(

danblack87 · 18/05/2022 13:59

For what we all do, and considering our experience and expertise I am spitting feathers that others can earn more by simply shelf-filling and cashiering ... don't get me wrong they do a wonderful job but I think we are lowly thought of in the transciption world - makes a mockery of a good education and life-long dedication to the NHS. Let's all 'clap' for the transcriptionists of the world ?!! LOL

Meha5a · 18/05/2022 14:34

@danblack87 have to agree with you, been looking about and our pay is appalling !!! Today I have earnt more on ebay in half an hour than I have on here in 3 hours !!!!!

Newinmarch22 · 19/05/2022 10:27

Well over 100 tasks available today, emails to say loads on the system, cannot decipher one of the first 5 on there!! Such a waste of time. Must try and find another company

Whitestar55 · 19/05/2022 13:25

@Newinmarch22 Same here, very frustrating isn't it.

danblack87 · 19/05/2022 14:40

I've been in and out of Dict8 best part of the day - had my grand-daughter for a while though (so 2 hours out of working). There are loads of tasks and I was expecting to achieve so much BUT it has been a stop/start type of day on Dict8. Big Sigh!!

Whitestar55 · 19/05/2022 14:58

The dictation is getting worse regarding the layout of the documents, no indication on when to end the diagnosis, problems etc and when to start the next bit, it's all hit and miss and bloody boring too.

Meha5a · 19/05/2022 16:44

Same for me huge amount of work but the dictation OMG !!!! 1 in every 10 at the moment is decent, those poor patient's how in hell do they understand what is being said over the phone/in clinic ????

Gally123 · 19/05/2022 20:57

the trouble with getting an extra part-time job is the tax. I looked at jobs at Christmas to see if something temporary but help, but the hours were bad - mostly nights or three long days. No-one seems to do part time work like they used to. My sister who works part time in Sainsburys (on more money than me) does different hours most weeks as they change people around. Sometimes she has to do a double shift (morning getting up at 5.30am to start at 7am and then back in the evening). However, she warned me if I took on another job I would get hammered in tax.
