Hello Ladies - hopefully a new thread for you... @Carosel2 @Whitestar55 @Chrissols @danblack87 @flutterby18 @wfh21 @workingfromhomenow @cherryblossom114 @Lovemydaxie @homeworkmum and anyone else I have forgotten.

@Workingfromhomenow - that's pretty bad!

I've noticed some of you ladies also work for T-Pro. I've just been in touch with them and they've sent me some info. It says you have to type at least 150 letters per week? That sounds like a lot to me! I work part-time and wouldn't want to give myself too much to do (2 kids and a husband to look after lol). Any advice?

Gally123 · 04/01/2022 13:11

@Trace000 - go for it - at 150 letters a week that is an average of 30 letters a day and I have done my 30 this morning working from 10am to 12.30pm. Their dictations are much clearer and they are really nice. Also, you can pick - 30 long letters if you have time, 30 very short ones if you are pushed for time etc. It can be a bit fiddly at times but with the bonus now paid to all people, which works about at approx £100 extra a month, sometimes now I do 60-70 letters a day.

@Trace000: I can't remember when I started with Dict8, must be knocking on 12 years + No pay rises all that time. Good Luck in your new venture and all the best for the New Year.

Trace000 · 04/01/2022 13:36

Thanks @Gally123. That doesn't sound so bad (particularly the clear dictation lol)....just don't want to commit and then find i'm struggling with time - I work 2 full days and then a half day in the office. I wonder if they would give me a trial to see how it goes? I guess that's the good thing about Dict8 - if you want to do it, you do it but if you don't, no worries!

@danblack87, thank you. 12 years with no rise! Not great lol

danblack87 · 04/01/2022 13:39

@Trace000: Not Gr8 no; however, I am happy with the working life that I have .. it fits my needs and in that regard I am very happy. Feeling rather philosophical today ... COVID is rather a 'downer'. Hey ho, onwards and forwards into the New Year!!

danblack87 · 04/01/2022 13:42

I am feeling rather a bit better this afternoon so, hopefully, tomorrow morning I will get a 'negative' result and be able to start back to work at the weekend!!! Smile

Whitestar55 · 04/01/2022 13:44

@Trace000 Hi I think someone mentioned that DICT8 pay was once 6p a line, so there must have been a rise to 8p a line at some point, but 8p a line has been the case for over a decade at least. They exploit the self-employed contractor status to keep the business running on low pay.

Trace000 · 04/01/2022 13:50

@danblack87, I agree, it certainly is very flexible and that's why I wouldn't give it up completely. I used to work for DictateIT, which required more commitment and the dictation was absolutely horrendous at times, so much happier here :-)
Glad you're feeling better - myself and my daughter had it in November, although thankfully just felt like a bad cold, so we got away with it quite lightly. A lot of family are now "infected"....there's just no escaping it!
Fingers crossed for a negative result!

Trace000 · 04/01/2022 13:53

@Whitestar55.....maybe coming up on time for a wee rise then? ;-)

danblack87 · 04/01/2022 13:53

@Trace000 and all my Dict8 friends: Many thanks for all you kind messages re. my welfare. My best wishes to all/ Love this forum x

danblack87 · 04/01/2022 13:59

@Whitestar55: 6p/per line!!! I have always been on 0.08/line. Wow, was that back in the day when workers used to take their own pieces of coal to work and their own candles ... must start saving coal and candles me thinks ... LOL, LOL we must be nearing that now!!!! Least we don't have to check the work space with 'canaries' Wink.

Lovemydaxie · 04/01/2022 16:42

I started working for Dict8 in 2006 and I've always been on 8p per line.

Whitestar55 · 04/01/2022 19:21

I've only known 8p per line too, but someone in a previous thread mentioned 6p a line.

Whitestar55 · 04/01/2022 19:23

Maybe they hit the wrong key haha, I don't know.

carosel2 · 04/01/2022 22:36

Well had a few odd brilliant dictations coming in today Smile .....then the numbers of tasks grew very quickly😁... and im now back to gobbledegook from doctors who are illiterate and can't string an English sentence together! Not suprised Dict8 has encouraged the transcribers to "politely " tell them they are inaudible, or so quiet you can barely hear, noise, cluttering in background not to mention stating wrong dates relating to last year now. Ive highlighted in note box so many times today. I honestly felt a bit mean today saying to doc " dictated clinic today 2021 should it be 2022? Or test done last April 2022! "Sorry I've changed if thats okay" 😁 but we are told to type what we hear! It all sounds a bit condescending but if I didnt highlight, bet your bottom dollar a scrutinising proofreader would pick up on it🤪

carosel2 · 04/01/2022 23:35

@Trace000 - as @Gally123 says with Tpro its easy done, I only have one hospital and find I have so many letters I can access with them but I still swap and change if nothing on Dict8 (as I like typing) then I swap to Tpro to do a bit of VR.

wendules60 · 05/01/2022 08:13

Hi everyone Happy New Year, let's hope 2022 proves profitable,
although with DICT8, things are never that certain! In reply to Trace000,
I too joined about 2014 while I was working for NHS then gave up NHS work in 2016, so fully DICT8 after then and no pay rise since!! To be fair, it is a rather long time to be on the same rate, and I have raised it a couple of times with them, to no avail.

Housemum · 05/01/2022 09:27

Hello, I've just signed the transcriber agreement - I'm hoping that this could be a useful way of easing into retirement and earning a little extra, though sounds like it could be a very little extra from the comments above! I currently do 3 days a week in the NHS in an admin role, and I have also been doing transcription for a private consultant but that's only 1 or 2 hours a week.

Any top tips for a Dict8 newbie? Such as any equipment I might need? I'm used to using tapes and a machine, not sure how the online system works and how to listen/pause the audio, I'm presuming I will be sent instructions? And if they have sent a transcriber agreement does that mean I've been accepted or could they still decide they don't want me?

TIA

Trace000 · 05/01/2022 09:39

Thanks @carosel2, think I might give it a shot :-)

@wendules60, thanks for your reply. A wee rise would be really apprediated! I work for the NHS part-time and think I might miss my buddies if I left completely. The good thing is though at least I know I have something to fall back on if it were to ever come to that. Also, I do find myself a little lazier when working from home lol

Workingfromhomenow · 05/01/2022 09:53

@Housemum
Dict8 is great for being able to work when you want to, and not having to turn out on cold, rainy mornings. You can earn decent money if the dictators are OK but if not it really holds things up.
They will send you instructions. I just use the keyboard for Play, Rewind, etc, but you can get a foot pedal.
Thinking about when I started typing for Dict8 (many years ago), the thing that I found hard was not capitalising generic drug names. I was always getting pulled up on that. Now if I’m not sure I don’t capitalise and if it comes up on Spellcheck I Google it to make sure.
And be sure to always listen to the ’bongs’ at the end of the dictation. I missed a whole extra letter once and got my work super checked for a while afterwards, which was no fun!

wfh21 · 05/01/2022 10:14

@carosel2 this made me laugh, seemingly we had a similar start to the day !!! What is with all the whispering ??? and the trailing off of words into slurs, especially with the names of the drugs they cannot pronounce. Things turned a corner for a few days last year but now its back to the usual rubbish whereby a few seconds dictation can take as long as a 5 minute one 😡 Obviously there are pros and cons in every job and you can definitely earn well on DICT8 if the dictation is fair, but with the crap DICT8 is offering a pay rise is definitely a must. Clearly they read this thread as they have acted on some of it so maybe this should be next on the agenda ladies 😉

Housemum · 05/01/2022 10:20

@workingfromhomenow thank you for the info, I'm not too bad with the drug names and remembering which are brand names, but then I'm used to a particular range that my consultant uses (letters seem to be pretty much same conditions on repeat!) - I will have a whole new lot to get used to though.

Workingfromhomenow · 05/01/2022 10:51

A rise in the rate per line is definitely well overdue.
Perhaps Dict8 could rate their dictators and give a higher rate per line for those that are bad and take so much longer to try to decipher. I suppose as long as they're getting typed they would never do that though. How on earth would voice recognition cope with some of those dictations?

wendules60 · 05/01/2022 11:08

I was wondering if any of you ask for more per line, to them?. I have a couple of times and they say that there is pressure from competition?!
Perhaps if we all sent in an email, they woudl be pressured from us to make a change!?.

Gally123 · 05/01/2022 11:08

@Workingfromhomenow - there is one person (an American) on the Tpro voice recognition I have given up trying to decipher - the VR sometimes is just letters or a string of meaningless words so you basically have to type it from scratch, however sometimes I have no idea what he is saying. There is also a poor chap who stammers and the VR prints all his repetitions.
