Stupidly hard work quiz (help!)

If anyone remembers previous years my work sets a stupidly hard quiz for us to have a go at every Christmas. This year's is no different....

I've managed to complete the first 8 puzzles myself but now I'm stuck Xmas Sad Very frustrating as I've got the gist of the puzzles but can't figure out what the answer is!

Here's the first one and here's my answers. If anyone can figure out the final answer (two words 5,7) I'd be ever so grateful 😊

Julia Roberts is also my thought

Tibtab · 07/12/2021 22:21

Does the 7 from 5,7 refer to century? Sorry if someone has already tried this

Q123R · 07/12/2021 22:22

You can make 'female film producer won' out of the letters. No clue with the rest of them, mind!

HeyMicky · 07/12/2021 22:22

Award winners, or Oscar winners?

HeyMicky · 07/12/2021 22:24

Oh, you tried Oscar

sunflowerroses · 07/12/2021 22:29

Can't see if anyone suggested this but did you try plotting them on a graph and seeing if that shows anything?

ldontWanna · 07/12/2021 22:32

James Cameron ?

The thinking around it is a bit weird so I'm not going to explain it. Grin

Freddofan · 07/12/2021 22:32

I don’t think it’s winners, if you look at Scarface its been nominated fir Golden globes and a couple of others but not won (at least in best picture type category) No mention of Oscars or Baftas

ApocalypseNowt · 07/12/2021 22:39

Work laptop has been closed for tonight. I'll try any suggestions on the thread tomorrow!

Knowing question setters all male answers probably not an accident, I'd say.

Thegirl - the puzzles are hard but usually follow a theme or pattern that makes sense (when you know the answer!) so I reckon answer will be film, actor or character.

Surely it's "twenty films (5) from the 20th century (7)? Is that too easy?

StrawberryFever · 07/12/2021 23:39

If you take all the second numbers in the brackets from the first column and all the first numbers in the brackets from the second column you get (I think - I'm quite tired) the numbers 1-20. So I'm wondering if they could be the order you put the letters in, with the other number then identifying which letter you select from each answer.

Not that I'm getting a list of letters which looks meaningful to me doing that.

My other thought though is the significance of the years being listed in reverse order - should we count letters starting at the end of each answer perhaps? Or if my theory re one of the numbers identifying positions were correct, with it being the first number for one column and the second number for the other column- perhaps you count forwards for one column and backwards for the other?

I'll have to look at it again when I've had some sleep!

boringaccountant · 07/12/2021 23:58

It's probably nothing but the majority (if not all) of those quotes are ad libbed. Or weren't how they were supposed to be in the script.

bestdhever · 08/12/2021 00:13

@StrawberryFever I thought that too but 6 is there twice Sad

Q123R · 08/12/2021 01:07

Another long shot - Kathy Hepburn

Plantstrees · 08/12/2021 07:47

@Agapornis

Or perhaps Twenty lines (5) from the 20th century (7)?

But that still doesn't explain what all the other numbers are for?

Going back to the odd ordering of some of those numbers, I tried counting from the first letter rather than going back to the start for the second. To save anyone else going through the motions, it doesn't work as there aren't sufficient letters in all of the quotes to do it that way.

Rememberallball · 08/12/2021 07:49

@ApocalypseNowt

There's one other puzzle I'm stuck on in this round. This is it and these are my answers so far:
The port one is left The fruit one is date
Rememberallball · 08/12/2021 08:06

I now see that they had been suggested yesterday - that is what comes from opening a thread and not being able to get back and finish reading it till the following morning 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

HoardingSamphireSaurus · 08/12/2021 08:22

@Agapornis

Yes, I think that's what the 5,7 are for, to tell us what we are looking for in the list.

But it doesn't tell us what the rest of the numbers/letters are for!

ApocalypseNowt · 08/12/2021 08:28

IDontwanna how did you get to James Cameron....!Shock It's right!!!

James Cameron ?

Wow - please explain!
FoxgloveSummers · 08/12/2021 08:49

Oh my GOD what? Brilliant you solved it. Now I must know why??!!!

bigfatmeerkat · 08/12/2021 08:50

If you count from the earliest film, James Cameron directed #5 and #7. So was the link directors???

edin16 · 08/12/2021 08:52

So it had nothing to do with the numbers?

ApocalypseNowt · 08/12/2021 08:53

Those numbers are still doing my head in!

Never mind...on to the next one Confused
