Stupidly hard work quiz (help!)

If anyone remembers previous years my work sets a stupidly hard quiz for us to have a go at every Christmas. This year's is no different....

I've managed to complete the first 8 puzzles myself but now I'm stuck Xmas Sad Very frustrating as I've got the gist of the puzzles but can't figure out what the answer is!

Here's the first one and here's my answers. If anyone can figure out the final answer (two words 5,7) I'd be ever so grateful 😊

Pets... bugger. The dog!!!!

HaaaaaveyoumetTed · 07/12/2021 20:27

@riotlady

The letters we have separated out and alphabetised are

AAAA
B
C
DDD
EEEEEEEE
FFFF
H
I
LL
MMM
N
OO
PP
RR
S
T
U
WW

The fact that E is in there so much suggests to me that we're on the right lines in it spelling something out, but I can't work out what.

Also can't spell Christmas, so that's out.
HoardingSamphireSaurus · 07/12/2021 20:31

Or merry, yuletide, or holiday ... nor even The Grinch!

HaaaaaveyoumetTed · 07/12/2021 20:36

@riotlady

Taking (8, 14) to be the 14th letter in clue 8 et c gets me

Teiademamatoaodarehf

(possible errors due to dodgy eyesight!)

I think this is more likely a quote
riotlady · 07/12/2021 20:37

@HoardingSamphireSaurus

Or merry, yuletide, or holiday ... nor even The Grinch!
Oh yes, they were two unrelated comments, sorry!

Also thinking on it more, I think the numbers have to relate to the clue they’re with and not any of the others, because the (5,7) must relate to whatever is solved from the rest, if that makes sense

CommanderBurnham · 07/12/2021 20:40

@Plantstrees

I have taken the letters listed further back the thread

DEMOOLMERWWFDLAETRNEUBPPFFAMDHECEAISEEAF

and found all these words

FAMOUS
FILM
WHERE or WERE
MADE
ACTOR
PEOPLE
BAFTA AWARD

but I can't make a full sentence only using each letter once.
Frustrating and will keep me occupied for hours!

The first bafta awards were held at ODEON CINEMA at Leicester Square.
HoardingSamphireSaurus · 07/12/2021 20:40

I may need to sleep on this.

I am singing

DE - begins a dear a female dear
MO - a Stooge, a comedy brother
OL - is me, an O. L. D. (oldie)
ME - can't get this bloody clue

RW, WF, DL, AE, TR, NE, UB, PP, FF, AM, DH, EC, EA, IS, EE, AF

CommanderBurnham · 07/12/2021 20:40

Oh shit that's wrong. Ignore me.

Thegrassisntalwaysgreener · 07/12/2021 20:41

Daft question, is it definitely 2 words and not just two letters.

ApocalypseNowt · 07/12/2021 20:46

Pretty sure it's two words. All of the other puzzles in this round match with the numbers at the top

rosegoldwatcher · 07/12/2021 20:52

Oh you are back! Lovely - I joined in last year.

Have saved to my watch list and will engage brain in the morning!

Thegrassisntalwaysgreener · 07/12/2021 20:55

The only other thing I can thing is the 20 from the 20th.
Maybe count forwards/backwards to the 20th letter and the word that's 5,7 are start with those letters...

Either that or its some code to an ISO book or countries..

nancybotwinbloom · 07/12/2021 21:03

Is 1983 say hello to my little friends off scar face or shark tale?

bestdhever · 07/12/2021 21:18

@ApocalypseNowt try "James Stewart"

Q123R · 07/12/2021 21:18

Could the anagram be the question you need to answer?

Needdoughnuts · 07/12/2021 21:25

Wouldn't we be looking for characters rather than actors? Although I am slightly losing track so ignore me..

Plantstrees · 07/12/2021 21:27

Yes I agree, I think it is more likely to be a character than an actor.

HoardingSamphireSaurus · 07/12/2021 21:29

All we have is the pattern of the clues

A quote and a character name, with numbers drawn out

A heading with 2 as yet unused numbers, corresponding letters TF

And one unused year beginning with 20 - 2000

I was hoping for a film or character beginning with TF and a quote from the numbers/letters that was Christmassy perhaps Smile

TheGirlWhoLived · 07/12/2021 21:59

Gah I have about a zillion bits of paper trying to make the anagram work!

ApocalypseNowt · 07/12/2021 22:01

James Stewart doesn't work

OP posts:
TheGirlWhoLived · 07/12/2021 22:05

I can’t figure the quote… but bilbo baggins says lots of great (and lengthy) things

Inertia · 07/12/2021 22:07

@ApocalypseNowt given that you know the question setters, how likely is is that they would make a point about all the characters with notable catchphrases being male?

Or is it likely to just be an oversight, or an inbuilt feature of the film industry?

TheGirlWhoLived · 07/12/2021 22:10

The other options you have which is ridiculously left field are things like number plate locations, postcodes, American states- all 2 letters
Would it definitely be to do with films/actors?

Secnarf · 07/12/2021 22:12

Could the second word be “picture”?

I know that they did all get nominated for Best Picture, but that’s how they refer to films for the Oscars.

Q123R · 07/12/2021 22:13

Long shot - Julia Roberts
