Worst pain you've ever experienced?

Today I had a vacuum assisted breast biopsy which I didn't expect to be too bad. It wasn't until the anaesthetic wore off! The nurse told me to put a sports bra on tonight. Yeah that's not happening!

I've taken some tramadol I had left over so hopefully the pain will wear off soon but this is definitely up there with appendicitis, severe ear infection and toothache.

Giving birth and labour for 48 hours doesn't even feature in the top ten.

A slipped disc. Twice

MovingSwiftlyOn · 01/12/2021 23:37

Coming round from general anaesthetic following emergency caesarean before any pain relief had been administered.

Mackmama · 01/12/2021 23:37

Gallstones, wisdom tooth and then childbirth in that order. The wisdom tooth was like having a mouthful of burning metal.

And then just the general endo experience each month. It definitely counts.

Yesthatscorrect · 01/12/2021 23:38

@stayignorant so glad someone else has experienced this weird pain. Well not glad but understands! I think because it's internal it hurts more. A tight bra or bandage would help I think. When the pain starts to ease I might try my sports bra.

Labour without pain relief (no time) or the day after my CS, not sure which was worse.

Dental abscess - excruciating, was crying with pain.
Back labour with ds1

AnnieAreYouOkHun · 01/12/2021 23:39

An ovarian cyst

lupad · 01/12/2021 23:40

My contractions were worse than the crowning but I think that's because it was back to back.

The day before dd2 was born.

I had a horrible situation when pregnancy made we produce kidney stones. That's horrendous.

Several weeks before dd2 was born we agreed on an induction date (36+6). And I was asked to forego opiate based painkillers the day before and day off as they inhibit labour. I'd been on pethidine daily for months. Avoiding it the day before also helped in baby being born with an addiction.

So for 24 days before the induction at 8am I had no pain relief, I didn't sleep for the whole 24 hours before the pessary.

She was born after 36 hours with no pain relief except the gas and air I had for 2 hours. They were good enough to give me some pain relief after I fed dd2. She wasn't withdrawing from my medication but was helped by me breastfeeding her while on medication.

I can't imagine any pain like it ever again, though I was on painkillers after several months following her birth, it takes a while for the hormones to leave your system.

My appendix rupturing. Worst pain ever, I thought I was dying.

luinagreine · 01/12/2021 23:43

A Dr trying to remove retained products of conception from my septic womb while I was awake and had no pain relief by 'just getting in there and giving it a tug'. I was seriously ill at the time and was really traumatised by the whole experience. I've never screamed in pain before or since.

foxgoosefinch · 01/12/2021 23:44

I had an emergency mid-cavity forceps delivery with no epidural on board (we don't want to wake the doctor up, do we dear?...Oh, why are you pushing!).

Snap, I had one of these. The best one can say for it was that it was over relatively quickly Confused

It’s a toss-up for me between that, and recovery from surgery to rebuild a shattered knee joint, where I woke up in agonising pain and also vomited every few minutes for three entire days and nights. Anti-emetics didn’t work at all. 👍

Wingingitsince2018 · 01/12/2021 23:45

Spiral fracture to my upper arm. It was shattered in to 5 pieces and every time I moved a mm a piece would touch a nerve. I spent 4 hours in an a&e waiting room refusing to move holding my arm in place with my other hand. Had to move for xray and it was horrendous.

MotherWilliam · 01/12/2021 23:45

Trigeminal neuralgia

stayignorant · 01/12/2021 23:46

@Yesthatscorrect I think it would help just compressing it a bit, are you taking any painkillers? Ibuprofen and codeine was very helpful for me 👍

I would definitely say the two days after my c-section was the most pain I've ever felt though!

spaceghetto · 01/12/2021 23:47

Ear infection, 2 weeks after giving birth. The pain was so awful!

Fifthtimelucky · 01/12/2021 23:48

Dental abscess and root canal for me too. I had been putting off going for ages first because I was young and inexperienced and hoped it would sort itself out, and second because I have a fear of dentists and had found a lovely one but she was on holiday and I wanted to wait for her to get back. Big mistake!

Eventually a colleague at work dragged me to their dentist one lunchtime. He pumped me full of anaesthetic which made not the slightest bit of difference and then just went in. It was the most hideous experience of my life.

It was nearly 40 years ago and I can still remember the excruciating pain. Childbirth with nothing stronger than gas and air was pleasant in comparison. I walked back to work feeling battered and bruised, burst into tears and another kind colleague drove me home.

I have had abscesses since, but none have been nearly so bad because I have always gone to the dentist quickly and not let it become so infected.

Itiswhatitis21 · 01/12/2021 23:51

Strange enough the trapped wind after a c section, how I was not warned about that. It was awful

Tempusfudgeit · 01/12/2021 23:53

Dental pain makes me want to decapitate myself. It's far, far worse than childbirth for me.

SingingWaffleDoggy · 01/12/2021 23:56

1: Gallstones/ infected gallbladder
2: Dental nerve pain
3: The morning after mid cavity forceps, episiotomy and 3rd degree tear, I thought my baby had ruined my life
4: sinus barotrauma. I wanted to rip my own brain out

I hope you’re feeling more comfortable soon OP

SteggySawUs · 01/12/2021 23:57

Dental pain, and root canal procedure definitely worse than child birth (and child birth was by no means a walk in the park!)

monarchoftheglen · 01/12/2021 23:57

Cluster headaches.

I'm so glad to see someone else say barotrauma. Sometimes I wonder if I overreacted but it really was pain like nothing I've ever experienced. And like I say, I have endometriosis, I know pain.
