Friend is hijacking our weekend away with her Body Shop shite

Youngatheart00 · 07/11/2021 15:44

In a fortnights time DH and I are going away with some other friends for a weekend away in a cottage. One of my friends has recently joined the Body shop cult at home and has been pushing it any excuse she gets.

She’s now suggested the girls in the group have a ‘pamper evening’ which basically just means her trying to sell to us. Of the 8 of us, 2 have already said ‘great idea can’t wait’ and another ive spoken to isn’t keen on the products but wants to support her. I don’t want to fall out over this but I really don’t want to waste a Saturday night when I don’t agree with MLM and hate what it’s doing to my friend!!

How to approach this tactfully?

Whatever you say OP, you do not want her to bring her sales kit on that break so need to be really clear before you all go.

Else she'll corner you all one by one, or target the gullible men in the group for Christmas gifts that none of you want.

ChargingBuck · 07/11/2021 21:05

"Pam, that sounds like a great idea! I've just signed up with Utility Warehouse, so we can set aside Friday night for me to sign you all up - don't forget to bring your bank details!
Dave says can we all get up early on Sunday morning so he can run us through his Life Insurance offerings. It'll only take a couple of hours - don't forget to bring all your current insurance docs!

Or shall we just ... all be on holiday, & leave the business at home?"

Pam , I’m a bit disappointed that you want to make money out of us.... on what I thought was going to be a long awaited weekend away
... I just want a nice weekend with my friends, and no, I'm not getting my wallet out at any point.."

LindaLooky · 07/11/2021 21:13

I like how we've all decided to call her Pam.

boomboomshakalakalakaboom · 07/11/2021 21:15

Yeah cos she's doing a Pam-per-night Grin

AliceMcK · 07/11/2021 21:16

I have a number of mum friends in the body shop at home cult 😂 Not one of them has ever tried to push anything onto me as I’ve always made it clear I’m not a fan of body shop, they respect that, just like I respect they are trying to make a living or extra cash. I will still happily go along and get merrily drunk, I don’t see it as ruining a weekend for the ladies to get drunk and enjoy a bit of pampering.

BackBackBack · 07/11/2021 21:19

Pam - I want a nice weekend away with my mates. Not to be rinsed to buy stuff I don't want or need.

godmum56 · 07/11/2021 21:20

@KateyKontent

Saying no is an option, I do not think it's impolite to refuse. Your friend has taken over one night of your holiday to sell stuff. Her and her supportive can crack on. I'll bet he'll be off with the menfolk doing something less boring instead, CF.

I would not attend an MLM event, certainly not one I was paying to attend on a long awaited weekend away. "Not for me, thanks." No point in making any excuses, they will try to counter them. Then grey rock, "no thanks". I wouldn't agree to attend this on another night either.

I'd probably ask her for coffee to tell her. You have at least 5 people that don't want this. If I was feeling especially kind, I raise this separately so they didn't feel ganged up on. If they continued to be obnoxious, i'd call in reinforcements.

I'm sticking to our original plans and won't be going in with your spa night.

I have a truly lovely friend that has just got involved with Younique. As much as I love her, I just can't deal with the hard sell nonsense. I'm hoping it doesn't impact our friendship. I guess that's up to them.

but should she bea bale to take over a night at a cottage they have all paid for? As I said I bet she expects the main room to be put at her disposal

because its taking over a night of the holiday that they have all paid for.

Not at the expense of other people's weekend away though. That's nitcresoecting boundaries. My weekend away is not the yime for you to make money or involve me in a pamper session I don't want. Bring your wallet? Thats not respect.
TolkiensFallow · 07/11/2021 21:25

I’m way too invested in this. Let us know what you do OP!

Tanith · 07/11/2021 21:34

@Newbabynewhouse Probably not Sad - it's not my real name. I do know someone else with that name, though.

oakleaffy · 07/11/2021 21:35

I had a friend who was coerced into doing MLM
“ Amway”
It became really tiresome- People who live in Cities don’t need washing products, as well served by supermarkets.
It soon became clear the money was made from recruiting others- and all the training weekends.

No way would I be happy attending a MLM “Pamper” evening, as it would feel pressured and uncomfortable.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 07/11/2021 21:36

I think we have our mlm hun ...take a bow @AliceMcK.

Do you really think its ok to subject your friends to a hard sell on a long awaited weekend away?

Obviously everyone in the group isn’t bothered. If they arnt interested they can just say no. I do. If ops so bothered that grow some fucking balls and say she doesn’t t agree with it.

And because I don’t have a problem with women making money by selling body shop and have a differing opinion to you, I’m a what exactly?

skodadoda · 07/11/2021 21:42

This takes me back to the Amway fad in the 80s where several of our friendships were damaged.

BoredZelda · 07/11/2021 21:47

luckily Sally won't be reporting you to her employer HMRC for tax evasion.

“Except, of course, you’d have to actually be earning money from this to be paying any tax on it”

youvegottenminuteslynn · 07/11/2021 21:48

@AliceMcK

Genuine question, don't you think it's unfair and incredibly presumptuous of OP's friend to try to add a Body Shop sale to their weekend away once it's already booked and say "don't forget your wallets!" to them?

secretbookcase · 07/11/2021 21:49

The one advantage here is that it's Body Shop, so at least the products are known and tolerable. Though they are disgraceful to have adopted MLM .When friend of mine did it, I just bought a couple of things I'd buy anyway.

BoredZelda · 07/11/2021 21:49

A fool for thinking anyone is earning any money selling body shop and even if they are, it is likely to be way, way, below minimum wage for the hours of effort they have to put in to make a sale. Which means the people running the show (including the uplines who signed her) are basically taking money out of her pocket for their own gain.

MadeForThis · 07/11/2021 21:51

I would ask her to leave work and home and enjoy the weekend

MrsDoctorDear · 07/11/2021 21:53

I'd have no problem with telling her it's not gonna happen, she could take offence all she likes but she wouldn't be taking over my weekend away.

Remember Oriflame make up in the 90s? I spent a bloody fortune when a work colleague held a party at my house. I was only in my 20s so a lot more naive then.
