There’s more potassium in an avocado or baked potato than a banana.

Skeumorph · 05/11/2021 10:22

I quite like bananas so I have no problem. With them going. In to me.

FluffyBooBoo · 05/11/2021 11:35

@RedToothBrush

facepalm

Spot all the people who haven't read the thread and don't get sarcasm!

I want you to know that I found it funny. It was quite obvious to me that someone that knows the carbon footprint of bananas would be aware of the issue surrounding avocados. I only saw you having to explain after I posted response.
FluffyBooBoo · 05/11/2021 11:36

(this was me trying to be smug, in case it comes across that way. It was me trying to say 'i got it, it was funny'

FluffyBooBoo · 05/11/2021 11:37

WASN'T trying to be smug.

I'm not this much of an arse in real life, honest.

SeaToSki · 05/11/2021 11:44

1 medium banana 400 mg potassium

1 medium potato 800 mg potassium

Mashed potato anyone? And then you get calcium as well 🤣

Also people with heart arrhythmia need to make sure they have good levels of potassium, magnesium, calcium and sodium and some people struggle to absorb vitamins/minerals, so even with a good diet you can need to focus on certain foods or take supplements

Thank you! I was beginning to think I was going mad!

You should do what my mil did. She wanted to lose weight so cut out bananas because they are full of sugar. She kept the chocolate digestives though because they have less calories. No idea what the potassium content of of chocolate digestive is though.

Whingasaurus · 05/11/2021 13:08

@RedToothBrush you regretting it yet?

HomeSliceKnowsBest · 05/11/2021 13:09

Lots of lube, try to relax and maybe begin with a carrot or parsnip?

Dark chocolate is actually an excellent source of potassium.

I can’t eat bananas. I’ve had to have a couple of tests called t.o.e. Where essentially they put a probe down your throat to be able to look at your heart from the other side. A bit like an endoscopy but the probe is about 3 times the size.

To do it they give you a throat numbing spray which tastes like banana. The spray makes you feel as if you can’t breathe because it numbs the back of your throat. Once the throat is numb you’re given sedation so they can carry on the test.

I had one of these 2.5 years ago and I felt like I couldn’t breathe. My health was in a much worse state then, but my heart rate shot up and my blood pressure shot down, and the upshot was that I ended up in ICU and spent 6 weeks in total in hospital.

I was just unlucky. But the upshot is that even the word banana has a physical affect on me because it makes me think back to that spray.

I’ve had another t.o.e. Since then, and and this time I was sedated before they put the spray in. They’re not meant to because they want to be sure your throat is actually numb, but because of my previous experience an anaesthetist agreed to it. In future if I have to have one again I will sign whatever it is I have to sign to be able to have sedation first.

Regretting thinking Mnetters were able to spot a sarcastic comment?

Nope. It does illustrate a point though.

Questioning my sanity, yes.

amazeandastonish · 05/11/2021 14:02

yeah, this is a totally accidental title Hmm

Myusernameisnotmyusernameno · 05/11/2021 16:03

I can't eat them but I used to like them. I get horrendous stomach ache when I eat them now Sad

me4real · 05/11/2021 17:11

One word answer. Chips. Smile And not banana ones (though I like those too.)

Floogal · 05/11/2021 21:08

Who else remembers banana-ade? Like lemonade or cherryade etc. Yes as sickly as it sounds. Sold it in Sainsbury's 27 years ago.

Did like the banana rice pudding Sainsbury's used to do.

MrsSkylerWhite · 05/11/2021 21:10

Take a potassium supplement?

Justilou1 · 05/11/2021 23:57

*I think it’s important to state here that Potassium supplementation without prior testing can actually be lethal. While it is a nutrient that is vital for cardiac and neurological function, it can very quickly alter fluid levels and cardiac output, increasing OR decreasing heart rhythm, and affecting kidney function.
I live in Australia, and you can’t buy potassium supplements OTC here. (Although you can buy supplements containing low levels of potassium 2% of the daily allowance or less.) Not sure about there. Stronger potassium supplements can only be prescribed for patients taking specific diuretic medications that strip potassium from the body, or diabetic or chronic kidney disease patients who have been tested and found to be clinically low.

You can actually get more potassium into your body via food sources than available supplements.

All of these things have more potassium than bananas (YAY!)

Dried apricots
Potatoes
Leafy greens
Lentils
Prunes and prune juice
Tomato puree or juice
Raisins
Beans
Milk and yogurt
Sweet potatoes
Seafood
Avocado

.

TheMawisbraw · 06/11/2021 02:14

Urgh never, I’ve tried and failed on about 10 occasions to like them but I just can’t so I don’t, I did manage to grow to like olive oil so that’s something I suppose

MerryMarigold · 06/11/2021 09:42

I made banana pancakes today (the small, fluffy ones, not crepes). They were delicious and hardly tasted the banana despite containing 2 (2 eggs, made 20 pancakes).

maddiemookins16mum · 06/11/2021 10:07

Do those foam banana sweets count?
