Life isn't short!

Just thinking, I'm in my 30s so probably not even halfway through it yet. The thought of another 35, 40+ years... 😮 The time I've done already plus even longer on top?! It seems to stretch out like a never ending road. Anyone else feel like that? I know most people say life is short, but i disagree.

I’m the complete opposite. I am early 30s and will actually sometimes cry when I think about how fast it’s gone!
I feel like I’ve not done enough. I was a single parent as a teen so I feel like I’ve kind of missed out of the fun years a bit.

I often wonder if people who get married young feel like this.

What is your life like? Did you get married and have kids early?

WonderfulYou · 30/10/2021 22:39

Sorry just read you have children.
Do you find your friends are now having children or did they have them in their 20s too?

etulosba · 30/10/2021 22:43

Report back when you are in your 60s and see if you feel the same.

Bluepinkyellowcakes · 30/10/2021 22:45

@WonderfulYou I was a single teen parent for my eldest. Never married, think that's passed me by now. Have friends with children same age as my youngest, just school gate mums really. Maybe that's part of it, my life is boring, quiet and small. I do like quiet though, don't think I'd change it drastically to be honest.

Late 30s and it feels like two minutes since last Christmas and five minutes since the Christmas before. Time definitely seems to go quicker as you get older. I hate it.

Bluepinkyellowcakes · 30/10/2021 22:47

Interesting to hear older people's views, and some younger too actually. Seems I need to try to make life more fun so time flies.... But hold on, if I'm having all the fun then I won't want it to fly will I?! Grin whoever invented time had a sense of humour for sure Grin

I get what you mean OP, I have days where I feel like that. The other thing that gets to me is that we only get 1 life and whilst I'm incredibly lucky to have a lovely family, a roof over our heads, employment etc I do find myself wishing I could live a really amazing life, I'd love to travel to world or have a really amazing career, really be someone, experience more.

Bluepinkyellowcakes · 30/10/2021 22:48

@Summerofcontent

Life is like a roll of toilet paper The closer to the end you get the faster it goes
😂 Very good, I like that!

I'm 63 and every day I think I've probably got 20 years left at best. Then I remember how fast the years went from giving birth to my DD being 20... no time at all. I'm almost dead already. Sad

DaisyNGO · 30/10/2021 22:50

OP I am so with you!

If I am avoiding doing something, I often say "life is too long and too full of boring stuff to do that".

The essential things we do, working, cooking, cleaning etc are all dull. Of course there are lots of fun things but unless you win the lottery you are unlikely to have the free time to do them.

Some of my rellies made it to 90, it scares me.

DaisyNGO · 30/10/2021 22:50

Some periods of time rush by...I love those, it usually means you're enjoying yourself.

See I read "20 years left" and think "but that's ages!!! Does 20 years not seem like a really long time?! I might have double that remaining on my sentence, feels like forever. Which in a way I suppose it is.

I'm in my 40s and of course I want to be around for my kids but it seems like a life sentence ahead Sad

Bluepinkyellowcakes · 30/10/2021 22:55

@DaisyNGO yes, I've looked back at relatives and don't appear to have anyone who lived a shorter than usual life, maternal nan was 70 something when she died, nana was in her 80s and parents amd aints/uncles still seem pretty healthy in their 60s, hence assuming I'll also be an average and have similar amount of time

OP how do you think you'll feel on your death bed? I wonder what my thoughts would be, I think I'll look bad and have a feeling of 'what was the point in all that?'.

Fluffyteal272 · 30/10/2021 22:56

ssd · 30/10/2021 22:56

Dust if you must, but wouldn't it be better
To paint a picture, or write a letter,
Bake a cake, or plant a seed;
Ponder the difference between want and need?

Dust if you must, but there's not much time,
With rivers to swim, and mountains to climb;
Music to hear, and books to read;
Friends to cherish, and life to lead.

Dust if you must, but the world's out there
With the sun in your eyes, and the wind in your hair;
A flutter of snow, a shower of rain,
This day will not come around again.

Dust if you must, but bear in mind,
Old age will come and it's not kind.
And when you go (and go you must)
You, yourself, will make more dust.

My mum is 83 and worried she will live till 90. My dad would be okay with that age, but everyone's different. He is fascinated by life and humans generally IYSWIM.

Mum is also getting quite annoyed as some of her friends seem to have quite high expectations of her for her age. There's an 85 year old who still jogs at 7am daily. I'm glad for her but by god, that's a long life.

Yes I think I will think similar. I imagine I will feel relieved it's done, although sad at leaving my children who will hopefully be adults by then.

ssd - not sure what you're getting at with that
But today is the anniversary of the death of a family member who some say went too soon

This morning I looked at her photo and thought
Fear no more the heat o' the sun
Nor winter's furious rages
Home thou goest
And taken thy wages...

She has gone home, she is at peace, all is well. Flowers

withiceplease · 30/10/2021 23:04

Feels long sometimes but you never know - I've had 4 of my close friends die

  • one in her 20's, one 30's, 2 in their 40"s
Bluepinkyellowcakes · 30/10/2021 23:06

@ssdi like the dust poem. I do understand that old age only comes to the "lucky ones", but there just seems to be soooo much time to fill. Like I said, if I'm average I'm probably not halfway through so to imagine my whole life and then do it all over again, and then a bit more?! How do I say that feels too much without wanting to seem ungrateful for my health or even suicidal (I'm definitely not), it's almost like running a marathon and then having to do it all again (not that I've ever run a marathon, doubt I'd manage a quarter of one 😂)

@maddiemookins16mum

I’m 57. I don’t expect to be here in another 30, yet I remember very clearly a lot of what I was doing 30 years ago (1991). That scares me as those 30 years have flown by.
This exactly!
ssd · 30/10/2021 23:18

@Bluepinkyellowcakes, i like that poem too. I guess it just means try to make the most of the time we have here, however long it is.

ABitOfAShitShow · 31/10/2021 00:29

I totally understand, OP. I’ve literally just said similar to my mum. It all just feels so relentless. I can’t do the number of years I’ve already done again.
