Breaking news on Sky. David Amess MP has been stabbed ‘multiple times’. Feels like Jo Cox all over again, surely MPs need security around them? Some of the comments they receive on social media are off the scale. All parties as well. I can’t imagine a US Senator wandering around without security?

And SKYNreporting that terrorism has not been ruled out

(never know whether they know, but have not had it properly confirmed, that it is terrorism; or if it's just what it says in the tin)

derxa · 15/10/2021 18:16

@cloudberry12

A terrible tragedy. RIP

I wonder though whether this was done by some nutter because of his anti fox hunting stance? Haven't the attacks against environmental or animal rights campaigners (e.g. Chris Packham) escalated recently, and the pro fox hunting lobby has always been aggressive.

I hate fox hunting but no one has been charged for that land rover being set on fire near Packham's gates

So terribly sad.

And the only person to blame for this is the person who did it. Some of the comments on here have been so disrespectful and disgraceful.

Absolutely this. He served his constituency with honour It is very sad - I find some of the comments here appalling.
CharlotteRose90 · 15/10/2021 18:24

Terribly sad news. While I don’t agree with his views and what he stood for he didn’t deserve to be murdered like that.

CorrBlimeyGG · 15/10/2021 18:26

This is terrible. I may not agree with his politics, but from those I know from his constituency, he was helpful to those across the political spectrum.

Sadly, if the news coming out now is accurate, this appears to be related more to the hateful anti immigrant rhetoric put out by more extreme members of the government.

The Torygraph are reporting that the man arrested for Sir David Amess’ murder is a Somali.

Not good…

Franklin12 · 15/10/2021 18:30

Magicians - have you really looked back on what you have just written!!

It’s not good irrespective of the nationality of the murderer
LilyMumsnet · 15/10/2021 18:30

We're continuing to receive a high number of reports about this thread. Please remember that there is a real family suffering a terrible loss today and post with that in mind.

Ah, so now the racists will use this as propoganda without actually caring about the victim or his family, or the non-white people who are now possibly targets of violence and hate yet again.
Tobogganist · 15/10/2021 18:38

Appalling news. The poor man. His poor family. Heartbreaking.

Absolutely dreadful. A father to 5 children, a man who tirelessly fought for animal rights and helping children with learning disabilities. Awful. Just listened to the chief constable's statement and they were visibly upset.

BronwenFrideswide · 15/10/2021 19:08

What AR said was factual.

@Simonjt You post this and wonder why there is a simmering undercurrent of hatred which boils over - ffs what is wrong with you?

Demonizing, dehumanising and abusing people on the basis of the political or other views they hold with people like you justifying it and this is the end result.

Tealightsandd · 15/10/2021 19:15

There is no excuse for stabbing somebody.

This isn't about centuries old name calling.

Hate and division is horrible but it's no excuse nor reason for murder.

There is, as Sir David himself spoke about, a knife crime epidemic blighting society - claiming victims from all levels of society.

Tackling it would, I think, be a rather fitting tribute to a principled hardworking man who campaiged against it.

Glassofshloer · 15/10/2021 19:35

There’s no point calling it a ‘knife crime epidemic’ as we won’t be banning knives. There is extremely little that can be done in that sense. However the ‘reasons’ behind knife crime can be analysed and prevented, hopefully.

Grumpyosaurus · 15/10/2021 19:45

I think it's bloody sad. MPs should be able to do their jobs without the risk of being killed.

@derxa, the landrover set alight at Packham's gates was one of two vehicles stolen torched in that area that night. The other was joyridden and killed a calf. Some months ago another vehicle was stolen in the area and set alight at a livery yard (or riding stables, forget which).

MakingM2 · 15/10/2021 19:49

@RedToothBrush

He may just have been in the wrong place at the wrong time

He was in a church. He was an MP.

People don't just randomly trip over in a church with a knife and repeatedly stab someone who just happens to be an MP.

I think we can probably eliminate the 'wrong place, wrong time' hypothesis.

Actually, no, we couldn’t rule out “wrong time, wrong place” with the information we had at the time. Churches are generally open places that encourage people who are struggling to enter them. It does make them vulnerable to random events.

Even information about the nationality of the attacker doesn’t rule that out, if it is even true - there are people from many nationalities with mental health problems and other problems who will also know that churches are open places.

It really doesn’t help anyone to attempt to fix a particular narrative before the evidence is in, and it is an error of logic to assume that the murder was politically motivated simply because the victim is a politician.

Imagine having all of this chatter swirling around if he was someone you knew and cared about. We must wait and see, and there’s not much else useful to say until someone actually knows what happened and why.

Ohshittt · 15/10/2021 19:53

So many of us feeling so sad about this tragic event. He was just doing his job. It makes me think about how absolutely distraught his family and friends will be, I am thinking of them tonight. We can't and won't always agree with everyone else in this world and we can't allow violence to be the answer, our children must grow up in a world where we change things for the better and these events become non existent. I don't know what the answer is, I don't think anyone does really but I hope the good in this world will prevail and mindless violence will end.

Rest in Peace David, may your killer get the justice they deserve and your family find peace.

Ori3 · 15/10/2021 19:56

Awful, just awful. Poor man & poor family. I just don’t know what’s going on anymore, so many bad things happening. It’s scary

Glassofshloer · 15/10/2021 19:56

It’s awful to think what his family are going through, this evening, this second. Just the beginning of a long agonising journey for them.

frumpety · 15/10/2021 19:56

My heart goes out to his family, they must be absolutely devastated. Flowers
