An MP has just been stabbed.

Breaking news on Sky. David Amess MP has been stabbed ‘multiple times’. Feels like Jo Cox all over again, surely MPs need security around them? Some of the comments they receive on social media are off the scale. All parties as well. I can’t imagine a US Senator wandering around without security?

His policies were clear: he started the campaign against fuel poverty, was active on women's health and animal cruelty issues, and he was a working class Tory, who grew up in a terraced house with an outside loo and a tin bath.... not quite the privileged posh eejit that most of the Islington Labour luvvies who post here at length like to dismiss all Tory MPs as being. Degree from a Bournemouth FE college is not exactly your Bullingdon Club braying old Etonian.

elodie77 · 15/10/2021 20:13

was active on women's health Hmm

Regardless of what his views and policies were, NO-ONE deserves to be killed! Leave off with the 'Islington Labour luvvies'.

Let's not, shall we?

RIP

@ninnynonny

Not in any way trying to score cheap political points, just commenting on what COULD have happened. I knew this would be the reaction.
You mean you were speculating on what COULD have happened. How distasteful.
Dustingiseasy · 15/10/2021 20:48

This must have been terrifying. My heart goes out to his family, friends and colleagues who witnessed this.

A single politician has very little actual power, they can make phone calls/send emails/meet people and try and sort things out for individuals in their constituency, but in reality that sometimes isn't possible, not all things are fixable even if you are a dedicated MP.

@StrongLegs what issues do you think politicians aren't listening about ?

PurpleDaisies · 15/10/2021 21:19

@StrongLegs

It really makes me scared though, because I feel as though the country is really so frustrated with politicians, but I don't feel as though the politicians are listening. I feel as though this kind of violence is the inevitable result, but I don't see them starting to actually listen to people's concerns.
We don’t know the murder has anything at all to do with politics. Speculation like that is pretty distasteful.
StrongLegs · 15/10/2021 21:34

Oh, sorry. You're right, I suppose it might not be politically motivated. Forget I said it.

ducksalive · 15/10/2021 21:47

This awful, no MP should be killed.
It really doesn't matter who they are, what party they are part of.

People including politicians need to be mindful of how they talk about MP's they are very vulnerable as we have sadly seen again.

LatteLatteLatte · 15/10/2021 21:51

Flowers for his family. Awful news, utterly tragic and horrific.

Glassofshloer · 15/10/2021 21:55

I keep looking at the obituaries etc thinking if he had known 12 hours ago what the news would be this evening… it’s just chilling. Yet another reminder of how life is so so fragile.

AnMPsWife · 15/10/2021 22:14

I still can’t believe it.

It’s like a weird joke, I mean who would pick David? He was just a quiet low profile nice, quirky, guy.

You’d never have him on an at risk list. At the most, he was Catholic and stuck by his values. Can’t see that is enough of a reason to inspire homicidal thoughts.

It isn’t enough. Poor man and his poor family and friends. I am so sorry.
ChristmasPlanning · 15/10/2021 23:04

Such a tragedy. Thanks for his family and loved ones

pucelleauxblanchesmains · 15/10/2021 23:16

Very ironic while decrying the state of our political discourse to start ranting about "Islington luvvies".

pucelleauxblanchesmains · 15/10/2021 23:20

We also have no motive for his murder as of yet, so it could have been anything at all and not related to anything Angela Rayner said (again noting the irony of rushing to blame one's political opponents!). If it was an Islamist terror attack, for example, I can't see that being linked to Angela Rayner's thoughts on the Tories.

And it is terrible. I didn't know much about him but he seemed like a very nice man & one of the few people to be willing to talk about endometriosis (which runs in my family) at all.

MyDHusedtobeanMP · 15/10/2021 23:54

@AnMPsWife

NC for this.

My husband is an MP. Today has felt like Jo Cox all over again. 😞

Really willed him to be ok. Hasn’t sunk in yet I don’t think.

Screens wouldn’t have helped Jo anyway as she was outside.

My husband stopped most of his open surgeries like David’s one today after Jo.
Obviously Covid stopped even more.

Security at his office and our home is already tight but will be tightened further.

People complain if they aren’t out and about, don’t campaign, etc. So they feel they have to. And most want to tbh, they need to hear about local issues from constituents.

He has a personal alarm and is now carrying it with him, as he should have been. Wouldn’t have saved David anyway.

I am also NC for this.

My husband used to be an MP. Agree it feels like Jo Cox again. I can't believe its happened again.

My heart breaks for his family, friends and staff tonight.

The abuse we (all) used to get when he was an MP was relentless and awful. CCTV had to be installed on our family home, we all had to carry personal alarms, we were on the police drive by routes. The children's schools had protocols in place for alerts. More than once we had to vacate and stay with relatives because it wasn't safe to stay at home. And that was all several years ago now.

Its far worse today. I wouldn't advise anyone to go into elected politics.

Perhaps this has nothing to do with Sir David (or Ms. Rayner) and everything to do with the murderer. It may very well be the case that the man has some form of severe mental illness. I do not wish to use terms like 'psycho' or 'nutter' but you cannot be 'in your right mind' if you are murdering someone.

YourFinestPantaloons · 16/10/2021 00:12

Absolutely horrific, I can't believe this is happening again.

I don't care what side of the political spectrum people are on, this is never, ever remotely OK.

lemmein · 16/10/2021 00:17

Just been reported on Sky News that it had been declared as a terrorist incident so maybe we can stop pointing fingers?

SimonedeBeauvoirscat · 16/10/2021 00:33

Two elected representatives in the space of five years. There is something very wrong in England. If anything can come out of this terrible day I hope it’s that we can have a proper conversation about what that is. (Not on this thread, obvs, let’s show some basic decency and respect …).

MistySkiesAfterRain · 16/10/2021 00:40

How absolutely awful. Devastating for his family. Utterly senseless.

OrangeJuiceAndNoodles · 16/10/2021 00:56

Poor man. His family must be reeling. Terrible.

merrymelody · 16/10/2021 00:58

Horrible Sad
