Just heard it on the radio. It knocked me for six.
He was only 59. One of the funniest men on telly and radio.
RIP Sean

This really shocked me.

Such a funny man, and I always felt he was generous to other comedians on panel shows which is an unusual quality.

JM's message did come across as very virtue-signally and making it all about him. There's a world of difference between commenting that you were in touch only a week or two ago and glad you had that chance and actually screenshotting the actual message that you sent.

I'm absolutely not accusing JM of anything with this, but for all we know, he could regularly send superficial messages to everybody in his address book, without really caring that much - or the recipients being bothered either. Like the Christmas cards you faithfully exchange with your third cousin every year, but never, ever speak to or contact otherwise.

I agree that you should make sure you don't get distracted and fail to tell people how much you love your friends or they mean to you, when that is genuinely the case; but IF you're only doing it for the sake of it, to tick your own 'I'm a great friend, me' box, it's probably better not to do it at all.

I completely agree. Comedy panel shows are often just a way of willy-waving and pushing yourself to the front - impatiently waiting for another comedian to finish their material before you can jump in immediately and take the limelight for yourself.

Sean was so gracious about letting everybody have their chance and working with them and their material to make a better, nicely-flowing show overall for the viewers rather than treating it as a solo promo vehicle and begrudging the presence of anybody else there. In fact, hilarious though he was, on the odd occasion when he couldn't think of anything funnier to say in response, he would just stay quiet and let the other person enjoy their moment and audience laughter for them a bit longer - an extremely rare quality in comedians.

Theres a lot wrong with Jason Meford

Yes, definitely this. It smacks of someone desperately trying to prove they were good friends with the person who’s died, in a weirdly competitive way. It’s something one might expect from children and teenagers but not adults!

DancesWithTortoises · 19/08/2021 12:18

He's said he got it wrong. He isn't very bright or mature but seems like a decent bloke these days.

Oblomov21 · 19/08/2021 12:23
Sad That's young.
Oblomov21 · 19/08/2021 12:32

I liked a lot of his stuff. Thought he was very intelligent.

Oblomov21 · 19/08/2021 12:40

15 minutes of his stand up

PieceOfString · 19/08/2021 12:59

Gutted, RIP Sean Lock.

Yes I had to leave the room or I thought I would start crying and I didn't want to start my day in that frame of mind! It's so wonderful to see what genuine friendships and respect he had across the industry.

JM can do one, the self serving prick.

Passmeamenuatthetottenham · 19/08/2021 14:04

The other thing is, comics can be quite divisive can't they? Like, some people love Michael McIntyre or Jimmy Carr and think they are hilarious and others think they are awful and not funny at all.

But Sean Lock seemed to be one of those universally loved comics, I didn't know anyone who didn't like him or thought he wasn't funny? In fact, thinking about it, my DH and I often disagree on stand up comics, but we both really loved Sean Lock!

It's actually quite rare in comedy (and celebrity in general I guess) isn't it?

Giggorata · 19/08/2021 14:47

So gutted about Sean. I remember worrying about his health a while back, when he seemed quite gaunt and hoarse, but he seemed to recover, so I hoped for the best.
15 Storeys High is one of the best comedy series ever and criminally underrated and under screened. And some of his one liners are killing.
Oh bugger.
Remember he said that when he died, he wanted his ashes to be scattered in Piers Morgan's eyes. 🤣🥲

Candleabra · 19/08/2021 14:59

Totally agree. And you could tell he was a lovely man too. Which is also rare in that job. I find lots of comedians funny but wouldn't like to be friends with them. I never felt that about Sean Lock.

Hemingwaycat · 19/08/2021 15:55

Jason Manford is a prick so it didn’t really surprise me, completely self serving and egotistical. I think the fact Sean didn’t even reply speaks volumes…

Sean was great, he will be sorely missed.

Dnaltocs · 19/08/2021 17:58

Rest in Peace Sean

MimiDaisy11 · 19/08/2021 18:02

I haven't watched panel shows in a while so didn't know he was sick. He was one of my fav comedians. It's really sad and too young to die. I was surprised and sad to hear it in the news. It's been a long while since I've been sad at a celebrity death announcement.

CherryRipe1 · 19/08/2021 18:03

Gutted. He was so funny, naturally comedic, funny bones. A light has gone out.

cherish123 · 19/08/2021 18:40

Very sad. Very funny and super intelligent man.

quiteathome · 19/08/2021 18:45

So very sad. He was on my list of people I would love to invite to a dinner party.

(And I had a crush on him)

OldMamaOf3 · 19/08/2021 19:53

Sad sad news....he did an alternative to 'The Tiger Who Came To Tea' absolutely hilarious.
Saw him live a couple of times and met him, lovely guy. May he Rest In Peace Flowers

Harls1969 · 19/08/2021 20:58

He was only 5 years older than me. It just goes to show how short life is doesn't it. Thinking of his family and friends

Bouledeneige · 19/08/2021 22:26

I spent a very rewarding morning yesterday watching all the clips of him. I loved him and really only watched 8OO10Catsdocountdown because of him.

I loved his mascots, his sharp, dry and creative wit. Absurdism. How well he gelled with the other panellists and was never unkind or cruel. I loved how he made Jimmy Carr laugh till he cried - it was clear that Jimmy loved him - as he said in his tribute yesterday.

Some of my favourite clips was him saying 'I promise not to spit on you later when we're having sex', the tiger who went for a pint and carrot in a box.

OrtolanVeil · 19/08/2021 22:33

Ch4 are right now showing one of his stand-up shows and he's talking about going on Mumsnet!
