Eating our 10-a-day thread

Breathmiller · 30/07/2021 10:37

I would like to try to start a project of getting my 10-a-day of fruit and veg in every day.

Anyone fancy joining me? I find groups on here of support so useful.

I know lentils and beans and chickpeas are part of it too so I will up them. I'm vegan so I'm hoping that should make things easier as I eat lentils as part of my diet anyway.

This thread is for everyone who would like to focus on 'eating the rainbow' as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Or anyone who does this already who has any hints and tips?

That does sound good wilderness

I managed to add a few more this evening. I am enjoying having healthier snacks in the evening if I'm peckish.

  1. Grapes (straight from tge fridge so they give a satisfying crunch)
  2. Carrots
  3. H/M houmous leftover from yesterday's dinner.

Feels a bit better than my paltry 2 earlier on.

  1. Cauliflower cheese (homemade - why does it always taste nicer as leftovers?)
  2. Satsuma
3/4. Beansprouts, red peppers, water chestnuts, pineapple juice (homemade sweet & sour chicken)
  1. Grapes
KrispyKale · 20/10/2021 20:04

Leftovers are my favourite breakfast now.
1 Tomatoes
2 blueberries
3 Lettuce, cucumber, spring onion
4 brown onion, red pepper, mushroom

Thanks for that Breathmiller. And well done Wilderness.
Today:
1 pear
2 satsuma
3 tomato, lettuce, red pepper, radish
4 Onion, broccoli
5 apple , blueberries
1/2 portion olives!
A bit fruit heavy. Will do better next week.

Wildernesstips · 25/10/2021 18:54

Love that infographic Breathmiller -I’m sure that was in our work kitchen at one point.

Only 3 yesterday: plums, carrots and Brussel sprouts.

Today:

  1. Tomatoes, salad leaves
  2. Roast patty pan squash
  3. Carrot & swede mash
  4. Broccoli
I’m actually having another serving of patty pan squash for dinner too, but can’t really count that.
TwentinQuarantino · 26/10/2021 14:35

Hi! Love this thread idea, can I join? I realized what a rubbish diet I have and need some motivation to eat clean with more fruit and veg! I've also started intermittent fasting, currently 18/6 so my eating window is between 10am and 4pm with 2 meals, working towards a window that is 20/4. DH is doing OMAD as he has weight to lose, whereas mine is more for health reasons and not weight.

Today I had a tuna/mayo salad with:

  1. tomato
  2. cucumber
  3. handful of sweetcorn, half a red onion
  4. grated carrot
  5. green juice - consisting of kale, spinach, carrot, apple. Does that count as 1 or 2?

Hoping to get some fruit in later with my main meal.

Wildernesstips · 26/10/2021 22:01

Welcome Twentin. Officially a juice or smoothie only counts as one of your 5, but if you manage 10, then I personally feel you could have 2 😄.

  1. Raspberries
  2. Pear
  3. Tomatoes
  4. Broccoli
  5. Plums (made a lovely Autumnal sweet and sour sausage & plum traybake)
  6. Baked apple
6.5 Sultanas and a little salad in a sandwich.
Breathmiller · 31/10/2021 12:00

Welcome Twentin
Yes, 150ml of juice of any kind makes 1 portion. If you have more than that it still counts as 1. I think it's because of the sugar content and lack of fibre. But, i agree if you're doing 10 a day and want to count 2 then go ahead. It's all good to get more fruot and veg in. Link on the first page to the portion sizes from the NHS.

I've been a bit absent from the thread, needed a break. I know i didn't do as well as when I'm posting but hey ho. I did notice that little things have seeped in though. I will willingly choose carrot sticks and houmous as a snack sometimes. Sometimes i even just clean up a carrot and snack on it.

We had a traditional type meat (fake for me) and 2 veg last night but we added sweetcorn to the mash, and had 4 veg with it - kale, carrotd, broccoli and peas. We are definitely making better choices (sometimes!! My sugar levels have risen again, hence me being back on here)

Breathmiller · 31/10/2021 19:59

Phew, made it today. Seems a while. It sometimes feels a lot of food to fit in, especially if it's not all that your eating. I suppose whatever space I'm filling with veg or fruit I'm not filling with crap. And I do enjoy it. I just need to remember it's instead of not as well as.

  1. Mushrooms
  2. Spinach
  3. Apple and mango juice
  4. Pear
  5. Cherries
  6. Carrots
  7. Houmuss/chickpeas
  8. Peppers
  9. Onion/olives
10. Rocket 11. Tomato
OP posts:
TwentinQuarantino · 31/10/2021 22:05

That's a great list, OP! Well done.

I didn't do so great today. I've pulled a muscle of some sort in my back and been in agony all day. My period is due to start so feeling very grouchy and can also feel a cold coming on!

I bought a stirfry with lots of goodstuff in but will have that tomorrow as I fancied DH's meat curry instead.
I managed:

  1. satsuma (just checked list and 1 portion size should be 2 satsumas. Grrr).
  2. banana
  3. grapes
  4. carrot
  5. strawberries

More veg tomorrow hopefully!

Wildernesstips · 01/11/2021 05:49

Well done you two.

  1. Red grapes
  2. Carrots
  3. Roasted Patty pan squash - I will get to the end of this glut at some point
  4. Kale/Lettuce
4.5 Pineapple slices which I made into a lovely salsa with my gammon.
Wildernesstips · 01/11/2021 19:47

Slightly better with 5.5 today:

  1. Pineapple
  2. Orange juice
  3. Satsuma
  4. Asparagus soup
  5. Broad bean, pea & edamame mix
5.5 Kale
Breathmiller · 01/11/2021 21:51

Ooh, I have just copied an asparagus soup recipe to try. I have plenty asparagus in so ill make it tomorrow. Do you have a recipe you use? I think this one was on the BBC food recipes.

Did well today, not much else other than all this. I do find it easier to not eat crap during the week.

  1. Apple and mango juice
  2. Pear
  3. Spinach/carrot
  4. Cucumber
  5. Houmous
  6. Veg soup
  7. Tomatoes
  8. Raspberries
  9. Apple
10. Sweetcorn
OP posts:
TwentinQuarantino · 01/11/2021 22:07

Asparagus soup sounds like something I'd like! Let me know how yours turns out, OP and I will give it a try. I had my app at the breast clinic today and got the all-clear which was a huge relief. But it's been a wake-up call for me and I'm determined to continue my fruit/veg intake.

  1. Sweetcorn (way more than necessary but I added cheese granules and paprika in and finished the lot)
  2. Carrots
3/4/5. Mushroom stirfry with cabbage and beansprouts
  1. Red Lentils - dahl (I'm sure that counts right?)
  2. Cucumber

Not bad considering I spend most of the day full of anxiety!

Wildernesstips · 02/11/2021 18:25

I confess that my asparagus soup came out of a tin (I’m now wondering if it even counts). But anyway, let me know if you make it as I love asparagus.

  1. Grapefruit
  2. Plum tomatoes
  3. Cold roast patty pan squash
  4. Carrots
  5. Mushrooms
  6. Apple
  7. Salad and kale (not together)
Breathmiller · 02/11/2021 18:39
  1. Tropical fruit & kale juice
  2. Pear
  3. Carrot
  4. Celery
  5. Blueberries
  6. Beans
  7. Tomatoes
  8. Cucumber
  9. Spinach
10. Shallot/yellowpeppers/rocket

Did well today and I enjoyed it all.
Baked potato and beans for dinner with half a plate of spinach and veg. Really nice. I fancied a sausage sandwich for lunch so I added some rocket but it does make it harder to get any veg in when a meal is not based around veg itself.

But while I was working at the computer I had a snack of a couple of carrots and celery.

I am so much better when I post here. It keeps me accountable.

OP posts:
Breathmiller · 02/11/2021 18:40

I didn't get a chance to make the asparagus soup today.

OP posts:
KrispyKale · 02/11/2021 18:53

Had some things come up but was back on f and v today:

1 lettuce and tomato
2 red pepper and cucumber
3 Carrots ( x 2 portions)
4 kale and broccoli
5 red and brown onion, garlic, lemon, herbs
6 satsuma

And I have snacked on loads of nuts which I know aren't counted but they are good for me😉. So I feel I'm full of the good stuff.
