Eating our 10-a-day thread

Breathmiller · 30/07/2021 10:37

I would like to try to start a project of getting my 10-a-day of fruit and veg in every day.

Anyone fancy joining me? I find groups on here of support so useful.

I know lentils and beans and chickpeas are part of it too so I will up them. I'm vegan so I'm hoping that should make things easier as I eat lentils as part of my diet anyway.

This thread is for everyone who would like to focus on 'eating the rainbow' as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Or anyone who does this already who has any hints and tips?

  1. Lettuce
  2. Tomato
  3. Cucumber/sweetcorn
  4. Peppers
  5. Raisins
  6. Apple
  7. Spinach
  8. Onion
  9. Asparagus
10. Mushrooms

mumsnet massive salad for lunch, some fruit mid afternoon then vegetables in fajita mix with rice for dinner. So for those who struggle to think how to ever reach 10 , I find that meals that are mostly veg rather than a side accompaniment is the only way to get there.

Also, if anyone was here earlier on and read that I was experimenting with reintroducing wheat after around 15 years without, I think I have to admit defeat. Even before covid I pretty much felt sick, bloated and ahem...not great digestion. So, all these delicious things I've been enjoying again , I think have to be back off the menu. Oh well, it was tasty while it lasted.

Adding a portion of tropical frozen fruit (pineapple, papaya, passion fruit and mango) blitzed up with some Greek Soya Yoghurt to make some ice cream. I have a sweet tooth and add in maple syrup but I always feel it's a much healthier way to get an ice cream dessert

I had a moderate salad today for lunch😄 definitely missing the massive mark but better than my normal!
Okay, the list:
1 tomatoes, lettuce, coriander leaf
2 cannellini beans
3 red pepper, tiny satsuma
4 avocado 🥑
5 runner beans (the last from the garden)
6 aubergine
7 onion, mushroom
Planning on some crispy kale as treat next!

I have seriously tried today! Happy with 7 and making a good rainbow! I can't see myself hitting 10, I've eaten 12 things today total. Might eat something else later when the kids are abed.

  1. Carrot
  2. Salady leaves
  3. Strawberries
  4. Courgette
  5. Broccoli
  6. Blueberries
  7. Orange juice
KrispyKale · 16/10/2021 19:21

That's good @Indecisivelurcher. I agree 10 is a stretch.

Today I had weekenditis: didn't cook at all and ate out for one meal (with a very veg light menu.)

Enough excuses:
1 Blueberries ( ate 2 portions though!)
2 passata, mushroom
3 onion, cannellini beans

KrispyKale · 16/10/2021 19:21

Oh and a cress garnish😄.

Breathmiller · 16/10/2021 20:05

@KrispyKale

Oh and a cress garnish😄.
😆 I love that. Every little extra counts.

I've not been so well again today and had to get some meds for my asthma. I just haven't been so hungry.

So, I have managed the princely sum of....

  1. Half a grapefruit
  2. Spinach. (In some vg cheesy pasta - comfort food)

Might have a piece of fruit later.

Love the massive salad Breathmiller. Sorry don’t always remember to update. Good day for me yesterday:

  1. Grapefruit juice
  2. Plum tomatoes
2.5 Chestnut mushrooms 3.5 Apple 4.5 Satsuma 5.5 Edamame, broad bean & pea mix 7.5 Butternut squash, carrots, parsnips in beef stew 7.75 Baby leaf salad (so a miniscule salad for me 😄)
Breathmiller · 17/10/2021 19:32

Still not eating much here but feeling better.

  1. Half a grapefruit
  2. Butternut squash (in a curry with onions)

I have some strawberries that I might have some of too.

Sounds like you'll need time recuperating Breathmiller. Take it easy.

I tried focussing on f and v today and did well on variety ok on volume:

1 mushroom, tomato
2 brown onion
2 runner bean, cannellini bean
3 kale, carrot
4 Broccoli, cabbage
5 red onion, celeriac, garlic, herbs

Some of that was leftovers which makes it far easier to achieve.

KrispyKale · 17/10/2021 21:45

I should have given the broccolli its own billing too! Plus there were a few blueberries to finish. Then a couple of raw carrot chunks. I feel it was certainly more than 5😄 in total.

It's definitely stew weather now Wilderness. We all really enjoyed tonight's, the family had it with potatoes and I went for the cabbage and broccoli. Really nice plus so easy.

Breathmiller · 18/10/2021 11:56

I always feel like that after I do my list, like I should come back and give a vegetable the recognition it deserves. Like I've done it a disservice by giving it half a slot. 😅
I am revising yesterdays to add blueberries and raspberries so a couple more to add to my paltry offering.

This week being ill has made me lose a bit of weight, and I ak determined not to just pile it all back on. I have so enjoyed eating veg and fruit, in fact it has been the only thing I've really been able to face, especially fruit. So in honour of its healing qualities I will endeavour to keep the love of it up. It was so fresh and light and tasty.

Yesterday:

  1. Pineapple juice
  2. Roasted onion soup
  3. Roast parsnips
  4. Carrots
  5. Peas
Also had some fruit strudel (apple based), but not really counting it as not home made so probably too much sugar.
Breathmiller · 18/10/2021 18:29
  1. Grapefruit
  2. Broccoli soup
  3. Raspberries
  4. Mango and grapefruit salsa
  5. Bean and apple salad
  6. H/made houmous
  7. Baked toms/olives

Much better day today. Dinner was just a mish mash of salads and fresh bits and bobs. I was delicious.

OP posts:
Wildernesstips · 18/10/2021 19:05
  1. Pineapple Juice
2/3/4: Large (not massive) tuna salad containing salad leaves, tomatoes, sweetcorn and green pepper
  1. Apple
  2. Cauliflower cheese
  3. Roast butternut squash
KrispyKale · 18/10/2021 19:18

1 Tomatoes, salad leaves
2 satsuma
3 Carrot
4 Broccoli
5 Blueberries
Pretty exhausted today. 5 is good enough.🍅🥬🥕🥦🫐
Good eating to all!

Breathmiller · 18/10/2021 22:15

Haha. I was far from delicious but it (aa in my dinner) was.

OP posts:
Breathmiller · 19/10/2021 20:24

Ashamed to say I made 2 today.
Was too busy to eat then we had chips from the chippy for tea as we were late to cook. So...

  1. Half a grapefruit
  2. Raspberries.

Must try harder tomorrow. The plan tonight had been roasted cauliflower and courgette pasta pesto. I'll aim for that tomorrow instead.

OP posts:
Wildernesstips · 19/10/2021 20:41

Lots of variety today but not so many portions:

  1. Frozen banana (in porridge)
2/3/4. Salad containing Salad leaves, beetroot, roasted butternut squash, tomatoes, green peppers (& chicken)
  1. Satsuma

Also, tiny bit of tomato, cucumber & lettuce in a baguette for lunch.

KrispyKale · 19/10/2021 21:33

I managed
1 Raspberries
2 Broccoli
3 tomato, cucumber, red onion

Not a great Tuesday!

KrispyKale · 19/10/2021 22:04

The salad sounds rather good Wilderness.
Just what I was missing today.😄
