Eating our 10-a-day thread

Breathmiller · 30/07/2021 10:37

I would like to try to start a project of getting my 10-a-day of fruit and veg in every day.

Anyone fancy joining me? I find groups on here of support so useful.

I know lentils and beans and chickpeas are part of it too so I will up them. I'm vegan so I'm hoping that should make things easier as I eat lentils as part of my diet anyway.

This thread is for everyone who would like to focus on 'eating the rainbow' as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Or anyone who does this already who has any hints and tips?

Woops, posted too soon.
This was the recipe Ibhad for asparagus soup. DH made it today and it took no time and was really easy he said. We didn't have quite enough spinach left as the recipe asked for but it was really tasty.
I'm working til 9 tonight so still got to fit 5 (i think) for dinner.

Literally only ate 3 yesterday

  1. Satsuma
  2. & 3. Red lentil and squash Dahl

However, enjoyed the Dahl so much I’m intending to eat vegetarian at least a couple of times a week now.

Wildernesstips · 04/11/2021 06:31

Also, soup link looks just my thing - have pinned for future ref, thanks.

Breathmiller · 04/11/2021 07:55

I was thinking about dhal the other day and thinking about making a big pot that would last a few days. Not had it for ages.

I do think this is easier for me because I'm vegan so many of my meals are naturally based round vegetables. I don't mibd mest alternatives but I've noticed if I have them (like the sausage sandwich the other day) then it's much harder to fit in enough vegetables.

OP posts:
Breathmiller · 04/11/2021 07:55

dont mind meat alternatives

OP posts:
KrispyKale · 04/11/2021 11:07

I do eat meat and find the most successful meat free meals for me are with puy lentils or mushroom or both! Aubergine too can give a more substantial texture.

I am determined to use cauliflower more this year: I always opt for broccoli and cabbage for the "greens" boost. I hate the whole cauliflower rice thing but do love it spiced.

Breathmiller · 04/11/2021 11:36

Yeah, i have been drawn to cauliflower too. I've been making cauliflower curries. And we just have it as a side veg much more which I had forgotten how much I like.

I used to make a cauliflower and brocolli bake with leeks and carrots and peas and a white sauce years ago. You've reminded me about it. Might make it next week.

OP posts:
Wildernesstips · 04/11/2021 18:39

Cauliflower is so versatile, I like it in this www.naivecookcooks.com/loaded-spicy-veggie-pie/

1 & 2. Leftover red lentil & squash dahl

  1. Apple
  2. Leftover chicken & mushroom pie (mushroom)
  3. Kale
  4. Peas

All about the leftovers today 😂, and the pie had leftover gammon in it. I am so anti food waste (probably to my own detriment).

Breathmiller · 04/11/2021 22:18

No, I hate food waste too. I like nothing better than having a few days making things out of what's left in the fridge and cupboards.

  1. Tropical fruit & kale juice
  2. Cherries
  3. Spinach & Asparagus soup
  4. Spinach/grapes
  5. Houmous
  6. Cauliflower
  7. Watermelon
  8. Carrots
OP posts:
KrispyKale · 05/11/2021 18:39

1 mixed peppers, mushroom
2 apple
3 satsuma X 2
4 spinach, red onion
5 aubergine
6 blueberries
I would have done so much better had I avoided all the cakes I ate as snacks today. Go figure!😄
I'm off to buy veg tomorrow! And I'll be sure to make enough for leftovers.

Breathmiller · 05/11/2021 19:24
  1. Tropical fruit & kale juice
  2. Roasted red pepper
  3. Avocado
  4. Refried beans
  5. Tomatoes
Half portion Spinach

Not bad for a Friday I suppose.

I might have some watermelon later, if I don't have a second VG Magnum. 🥴

Evening folks, hope everyone is doing well? I've been absent for a while and not eating particularly well, but hoping to get cracking with it again.

B: tinned peach, blueberries, raspberries, with yogurt and seeds (2)
L: salad with pea and pesto dip, carrot, tomatoes, puy lentils, grapes, tofu and hemp seeds (3 portions)
D: stir fry with beansprouts, carrots, broccoli, mushrooms, onions, peppers, and quorn (at least 3 portions)
Snacks: 2 satsumas (1)
I think that's 9.

Breathmiller those magnums! I wish they did a mini one. Mind you I bought the mini Jude salted caramel ice creams and I appear to have no ability to stop at 1, LOL

Wildernesstips · 07/11/2021 14:02

Had a few days away where I’ve had a very poor fruit & veg intake so have come back and immediately had vegetable soup followed by grapefruit and pineapple.

Breathmiller · 07/11/2021 20:43

It's good that you came back and had some f&v. It's definitely making me think more.

  1. Apple, carrot ginger shot & a Spinach, apple, courgette, ginger, carrot juice.
  2. Spinach, lentil and lemon soup
  3. Tomatoes/mushrooms
  4. Yellow pepper
  5. Onion
  6. Carrot/cabbage/lettuce
Half portion Brocolli

I went out for dinner tonight (thai) and had veg skewers for starter which were packed full of fresh crunchy veg. The side salad was shredded cabbage and carrot and lettuce.

The main was tofu and veg res curry and again just packed with huge chunks of fresh veg. Delicious. It felt a better version of a meal out than it could have been.

I felt kind of virtuous today (and yesterday) because of my freshly made green juices for breakfast and lunch but of course they only count as one. I do enjoy them when I'm working though.

Grapefruit and pineapple seem like they will be very detoxing for some reason Wilderness. I've no idea if they actually are!

Yesterday was ok for me:
B: apple, tinned peach, blueberries, with seeds and yogurt (1)
L: ratatouille, puy lentils, tofu (4)
D: baked potato (i know the potato doesn't count) with coleslaw, hummus and avocado (3)
Snacks: a satsuma (half)

Morning, may I join in? I am a decently healthy eater but wondering if keeping track with other's doing similarly might help...

I do intermittent fasting so have only two meals a day where I can squeeze fruit & vegetables in - lunch and dinner!

Today's plan:
Pasta with homemade tomato sauce, peas, carrots, green beans, sweetcorn
Home made yoghurt with frozen summer fruits (raspberries, black currents, redcurrants, blackberries)
Scrambled egg on a bagel with Israeli salad (tomato, cucumber, yellow pepper)

Total: 12 types, although not full portions of each.

KrispyKale · 08/11/2021 18:28

A normal size satsuma can make a full portion, though there are some diddy ones about. Which is a good time to mention to newcomers who haven't read the thread that all the estimates on quantities derive from 80g being a portion (except dried fruit which I can never remember as tbh I only eat a few raisins in cakes so I don't count them😄.)

Today I managed:
1 satsuma
2 plums
3 Carrot
4 lettuce, tomato, herbs, a single runner bean(Hmm scraping the barrel there!)
5 black kale

I didn't break through the 5 barrier. But I did eat plenty of greens and it's been a physically inactive day so I'm satisfied. I never would have munched on masses of crispy kale as a snack before this.

Breathmiller · 08/11/2021 19:30

That single runner bean makes all the difference 😊

Actually, I like to think any amount more than I would normally is good. Better to hsve that runner bean than not.

Welcome ladybranstonpickle (love the name)

I have done worse than I've done in a while. In my defence I've had a mental day, very stressful and only ate at all when i got home and I needed whatever I had in. Which was creamy cheesy spaghetti with...

  1. Spinach

Oh i tell a lie, a quarter of a pear this morning.

I feel the note from my teacher would read "could try harder"

OP posts:
KrispyKale · 08/11/2021 20:05

That last of the season runner bean contained a whole lot of fibre I can tell you!

I find spinach so handy to stir through at the last minute. Hooray for spinach!

Breathmiller · 08/11/2021 20:34

Yes, spinach is a bit of a lifesaver here.

OP posts:
Wildernesstips · 08/11/2021 21:05

Love the single bean 😆! And spinach is one of my all time favourites.

  1. Mushrooms (on toast)
  2. Orange juice
3 & 4. Summer squash soup
  1. Green beans
  2. Tomatoes in arrabbiata sauce
6.5 Salad

Had a totally vegetarian day which I am also pleased about as aiming for 2 of these a week.

It’s approx 30g dried fruit, 80g fresh fruit or veg and 150ml of juice. But can’t remember quantity of pulses.

Breathmiller · 09/11/2021 11:04

Oh I'm going to have mushrooms on toast for lunch. Not had it for years.
How do you cook yours?

OP posts:
Breathmiller · 09/11/2021 17:46

Well I didn't make mushrooms on toast because I had no gf bread.

I did have...

  1. Carrot
  2. Leek
  3. Cauliflower
  4. Broccoli
  5. Sweetcorn
  6. Tomatoes
  7. Red pepper
  8. Apple

Still time to have some fruit in the evening. But I'm trying not to eat too much after dinner.
