Eating our 10-a-day thread

Breathmiller · 30/07/2021 10:37

I would like to try to start a project of getting my 10-a-day of fruit and veg in every day.

Anyone fancy joining me? I find groups on here of support so useful.

I know lentils and beans and chickpeas are part of it too so I will up them. I'm vegan so I'm hoping that should make things easier as I eat lentils as part of my diet anyway.

This thread is for everyone who would like to focus on 'eating the rainbow' as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Or anyone who does this already who has any hints and tips?

Okay, I tried the fig but didn’t love it. I can see it would go better in a salad maybe.

B: Fig, satsuma
L: Mushroom omelette, tomatoes. Apple
D: 2 portions of mixed frozen cauliflower, broccoli and carrots

Just over 7 portions by weight.

AGreenerShadeofKale · 13/10/2021 11:35

Oops Breathmiller, I do recall the three tablespoons now you mention it. I'll try that with some leftovers I'm having for lunch.

I did learn from this that I was wildly overestimating the green leaves I was eating. I have upped the amount considerably!

AGreenerShadeofKale · 13/10/2021 11:39

The crispy kale has been hit and miss: first time I over-scorched it and had to chuck the carbonised remains! Second attempt at 150 C in oven it was still a bit chewy but okay. Third time I upped the temperature again to 180 (in fan oven) but watched it like a hawk and caught it at crispy!

I’ve got kale and courgette soup again for lunch with a Chilean salsa thing on top. There was supposed to be crispy kale but it got incinerated. Oops.

Hello again. So I joined and then haven't been very good with my fruit and veg but I'm now raring to go Grin. @Breathmiller would you or anyone else be so kind to add the link for the nhs doc - it wouldn't open for me on the last link. Also what's 'Kent' face mean?

Indecisivelurcher · 13/10/2021 13:39

This is a good idea & thread, is it still alive? I'm not eating enough of the good stuff. I'm blaming the building site that is my kitchen, but the reality is it's too easy to reach for biscuits.

Indecisivelurcher · 13/10/2021 13:47

I've got 2 questions already! Both clutching at straws! Peanut butter - I assume it doesn't count? Crunchy peanut butter on toast is my go to breakfast... And secondly what about dried lentils in things like bombay mix? Assuming no!

I'm on 3 so far, vegetable soup from a can and a banana.

Oh I'm not sure how to save it any other way. You can just Google NHS 5 A-day guidelines but it will probably come up the same link. Hmm...maybe will need someone more techy than me I'm afraid.

"Kent Face" is from a Scottish saying "A well kent faice"

To "ken" something is to know it. So a "well kent faice" is a face you know well. Smile

Which reminds me of a friend who came to live here for a year with her family from the US in the 90s and couldn't figure out why everyone called her "Ken" . It's a saying (I think more east coast) after you tell someone something to say "ye ken?" As in..."you know?" Grin

Awww..as lovely as it would be that peanut butter was on the list, alas no. But it is good for you. Can you add a fruit element to it? A sliced banana? Or my favourite at the moment sliced apples dipped in a cinnamon flavoured peanut butter? Or have a glass of fruit juice with it?

I don't know if we ever came to a conclusion about whizzed soup did we? I know juice and smoothies and lentils/pulses can only count as one portion regardless how many you have but I'm still not sure about blitzed soup. Because if you buy it ready made from the shop it often says 2 of your 5 a day. Hmmmm.

I'm on a ridiculously low number but it's not that I am eating other stuff. I just feel very sick at the moment.

So...

  1. Grapes

And that's it so far. I have just had a cooked vg sausage on it's own because that's the only thing I fancied but that's all I've eaten today. Normal service will hopefully be resumed soon.

@Breathmiller love the 'ye ken' story 😅. I hope you feel better soon Flowers.

I'll have another look for the list....so far

  1. Satsuma
  2. Banana
  3. Apple
  4. Handful of raisins
  5. Grapes
  6. Small bowl of salad very very small - peppers, onions, tomatoes, cucumber
Wildernesstips · 13/10/2021 19:18

So, a very low total of 2 today mainly because I was having a late afternoon tea so had a very carby breakfast to tide me over and no lunch.

  1. Peas
  2. Root veg mash

Namechanged but still kale related!
Breathmiller hope you feel better soon.

Today's list:
1 pear
2 raspberries
3 Lettuce, tomatoes
4 stewed brown lentils, mushroom
5 Carrot, onion
6 celeriac, spinach and a few raisins.

Indecisivelurcher · 13/10/2021 21:44
  1. Tinned soup 1 or possibly 2
  2. Banana
  3. Apple
  4. Salad

Not great eh! It's my baseline.

KrispyKale · 13/10/2021 21:53

The only way is up.
Look at it as a solid platform on which to build!

KrispyKale · 13/10/2021 21:59

Don't think I've ever got to 10 different portions.😄

Breathmiller · 14/10/2021 19:56
  1. Mango
  2. Prune juice
  3. Pear
  4. Spicy veg and chickpea soup.
  5. (ish) Musrooms (in risotto) maybe not quite a full portion

I feel a bit better today and have managed to eat a bit more. I do feel constantly nauseous and I'm not sure if it was a reaction to the flu tablets I took which can make me feel sick. Or the little wheat in my diet again. Or covid. Dh didn't eat much when he was ill either though so it could be covid.

  6. Wine... Oh wait...
Wildernesstips · 14/10/2021 21:02
  1. Strawberries
  2. Tomatoes
3 & 4. Carrots, parsnips, butternut squash
  1. Grapefruit juice
5.5 Salad
KrispyKale · 14/10/2021 21:08

Hope you pick up soon Breathmiller.

1 Crispy kale
2 carrot
3 Tomatoes
4 red pepper
Plus some lettuce which helps make up for the kale not really being a portion..those leafy greens need to be consumed at quite a volume!
I thought I'd eaten more.

Sunflowers765 · 14/10/2021 23:14

I need to do this. I think I've had 1 portion a day for weeks and sometimes none. Doing sober for October so I'm just reaching for the biscuits instead. If I could do 10 a day I'd be too full for biscuits! I will have a go and start listing !

KrispyKale · 15/10/2021 09:39

Welcome Sunflowers!

Breathmiller · 15/10/2021 14:00

Welcome to the thread sunflowers jump in. Any amount that you have is worth noting. Even if it's none. It kind of makes me accountable to myself and then can only try to do better.

I hit peak mumsnet today. Finally feeling like eating today and my youngest was desperate for a treat (his treat of choice being a McDonald's) but we live rurally and can't get a delivery of that. But we found we could get a subway. So, i had....wait for it....
A Massive Salad!! 🤣🤣🤣

And, in true mumsnet style I looked at it and said to dh "I'll never manage this - it's a massive salad!" And it made me chortle. Had to explain to him what I was laughing about.

It felt nice to have a takeaway that isn't either crap McDonald's which really only ds10 likes. Or a rich (and expensive) curry or unhealthy chippy. It's one of the things I miss about living in a city is the access to a variety of takeaway food.

So, in my mumsnet massive salad I had....

Lettuce
Spinach
Tomatoes
Cucumber
Red onion
Sweetcorn
Mixed peppers

Along with vegan chicken, garlic alioli and mixed seeds. It was so good. And, I'm afraid I broke all the mumsnet rules and ate the whole lot.

Maybe 3 or even 4 portions? It was...have I mentioned? ... a MASSIVE salad.

Feeling better than I have all week. Been sitting out in the sunshine meditating. Lovely.
