Eating our 10-a-day thread

Breathmiller · 30/07/2021 10:37

I would like to try to start a project of getting my 10-a-day of fruit and veg in every day.

Anyone fancy joining me? I find groups on here of support so useful.

I know lentils and beans and chickpeas are part of it too so I will up them. I'm vegan so I'm hoping that should make things easier as I eat lentils as part of my diet anyway.

This thread is for everyone who would like to focus on 'eating the rainbow' as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Or anyone who does this already who has any hints and tips?

Greener I bought a fig this week but I’m not sure what to do with it - do you eat the skin?

AGreenerShadeofKale · 11/10/2021 12:57

I bought the small brown figs from Turkey. I bake them for a short while in the oven (15 minutes while something else is coking on a medium or low heat)
I prefer them softer like that. I used to eat them with yoghurt and honey but these ones I just ate on their own.
I finished the last two this morning!

AGreenerShadeofKale · 11/10/2021 12:58

Yes the skin and all.

Today wasnt too bad

Shreddies and banana for breakfast

Lunch was sushi carrots with houmous and melon

Dinner will be chicken korma with mushrooms peppers and spinach on side. And cauliflower rice mixed with normal rice.

So that 7 different ones today although not full portions for some...

Banana
Carrots
Melon
Mushroom
Pepper
Spinach
Cauliflower

Still finding this alot harder than expected!

Weedsorwishes · 11/10/2021 15:44

Does orange juice count?

I've been having a small glass of orange juice in the morning as I'm taking spatone around the time of my period so have it in orange juice but diluted half and half with tap water

Wildernesstips · 11/10/2021 17:57

Weeds, yes orange juice counts. Think you can count juice/smoothie only once in your 5 a day due to the fibre, but reckon twice if you’re trying 10?

Greener - thanks, I will try my fig for breakfast 😊

Breathmiller · 11/10/2021 18:31

Well done everyone who has kept the thread going. I have been out of the loop after a difficult few days. Upshot is that I have covid and feel rotten. But, my dh and Ds10 have been great at trying to keep me up with good food today.
So...

Melon
Strawberries
Brocoli soup
Half a small vg pizza with some onions, olives and tomatoes. Not sure of portions but maybe 1?

So not the biggest amount but better than some of the days.

I'm away to read back. 🌈

Oh, i love figs. I don't eat the skin though, I will try that way of cooking them. The skin is usually full of goodness in fruit.

Thanks Narwhal kids are now well and out of isolation. Dh got it and a few days ahead of me, then after thinking I must have been made of sterner stuff, I succumbed on Friday. Gave in to it and had day in bed today. Dh out the worst of it so he's happy to cook.

Oh no Breathmiller! Take care.

Today:
1 figs, very nice!
2 blueberries, satsuma
3 Carrot
4 aubergine
5 cabbage
6 onion, lettuce
7 lentils, tomato, garlic
8 crispy kale..not a full portion, maybe half. This was surprisingly good but was slathered in oil and salt.😄

Wildernesstips · 11/10/2021 21:00

Oh Breathmiller hope you feel better soon. Covid sucks, I had it in January but fortunately not too badly.

  1. Stewed spiced plums (in porridge)
  2. Grapefruit juice
  3. Savoy cabbage
  4. Peas

Hmm, will do better tomorrow.

Just found this thread. I’m a veggie fallen into bad habits. Would love to share food inspiration

I made courgette, kale and potato soup for lunch. I think I’ve probably got two full portions plus a bit of onion that can get topped up at dinner time. The plan for that is curry with leftover roasted butternut and acorn squash chunks, leek, aubergine, chick peas and maybe more kale if I can face it.

Weedsorwishes · 12/10/2021 15:48

Good day here

Breakfast was porridge with frozen raspberries and sliced plum on top.... absolutely delicious! And a small glass of orange juice plus water

Lunch was leftover curry last night so lentils peppers and mushrooms with cauliflower rice

Dinner will be spaghetti bolognaise so that includes mushrooms, soffrito mix (carrots celery onion) and tinned tomatoes. Will probably have a side of spinach with it

So that's....

Orange juice
Plum
Raspberries
Mushrooms
Peppers
Green lentils
Cauliflower
Carrots
Onion
Celery
Spinach
Tinned tomatoes

So that's 12 different fruit and veg but they aren't all a full portion, not sure how many portions it would be how do you all work it out?

Wildernesstips · 12/10/2021 17:01

Wow that is good Weeds. I generally weigh mine : 80g fresh, 30g dried and 150ml juice/smoothie. I also log mine on Nutracheck but then I’m trying to lose weight too.

Breathmiller · 12/10/2021 17:10

That's a great haul.
There is a link on the first page of the thread to the NHS guidelines of a portion. I have it saved on my phone. But you definitely get used to what a portion is

OP posts:
Breathmiller · 12/10/2021 17:12

Of course, I don't think you need to be that exact if you don't want to. Any extra you get into your day is good

I think this was an extra good day 😉 normal days aren't like that!
AGreenerShadeofKale · 12/10/2021 21:32

I'm very inexact but occasionally check what 80 g looks like with my scales!
(Not sure what pulses are meant to be: is it 80 g too, cooked weight?)

Today had
1 spinach, tiny satsuma
2 pear
3 cabbage
4 carrot
5 Onion, garlic

And I did buy a bag of veg and fruit on my way home so I'll be content with my 5 a day!

I'm feeling more energetic these days which I put down to a better diet.🥬🍆🥦🥕

TheNarwhalBalloon · 12/10/2021 21:40

Oh Breathmiller I'm so sorry you've caught it and felt rough. I adore your fruit chef though! What a star.

AGreenerShade I love kale but for some reason I find cooking it a right faff. Do you just bung the crispy kale in the oven?

TheNarwhalBalloon · 12/10/2021 21:43

Breakfast :pineapple and spinach smoothie (2)
Lunch : stuffed mushroom with chickpeas, salad leaves, tomato and cucumber (3)
Dinner: pea and pesto soup with canellini beans (2)
Snacks : satsuma
8 in total

Breathmiller · 12/10/2021 22:14

Thanks narwhal he is a sweetheart.

So today, i feel really sick, and don't fancy eating much other than fruit. So, I'm going with whatever I can face.

  1. Mango
  2. Strawberries/fig
  3. Prune juice
  4. Tomatoes (half portion)
  5. Broccoli Soup
  6. Banana

Melon yesterday went down a treat so when my (now cleared of covid) son goes to college tomorrow I might get him to pop into the shop for more.

There's another mango for tomorrow.

Night all.

I looked up lentils on that link and it says 3 tablespoons. I presume that's cooked, but I can't be sure. I'll google
