Eating our 10-a-day thread

Breathmiller · 30/07/2021 10:37

I would like to try to start a project of getting my 10-a-day of fruit and veg in every day.

Anyone fancy joining me? I find groups on here of support so useful.

I know lentils and beans and chickpeas are part of it too so I will up them. I'm vegan so I'm hoping that should make things easier as I eat lentils as part of my diet anyway.

This thread is for everyone who would like to focus on 'eating the rainbow' as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Or anyone who does this already who has any hints and tips?

I'm struggling a bit this week! Breakfast and lunch are going fine but we've had a few takeaway dinners and then I think it encourages me to eat rubbish from about 3 pm onwards!

So far today
B: spinach, pineapple and raspberry smoothie
L: salad bowl with lentils, tofu, tomatoes, pea dip, melon, alfalfa sprouts

But it's chips for tea 🙄

Breathmiller · 03/09/2021 19:51

Chips for tea on Friday is always a good thing Wink Enjoy.

I've done 9. Well, I've still to have the nectarine.

  1. Carrot
  2. Dates/shallots (not together 😆 they were just both half portions)
  3. Home made Mushroom soup
  4. Home made Houmous (I'm an addict)
  5. Apple (with delicious nut butter with cinnamon from Aldi - it was like a toffee apple)
  6. Broccoli
  7. Peas
  8. Asparagus
  9. Nectarine

Happy Friday everyone 😊
8-9 for me today

Kiwi (1)
Mango (1)
Pear (1)
Cherry tomatoes (1)
Freezer leftovers for lunch (2 different veg curries frozen together, estimating 2 portions overall)
Wagamamas for dinner - wok greens, vegan chilli ‘squid’ (oyster mushrooms) and no duck donburi (some more mushrooms, cucumber, edamame, kimchi). Estimating 2-3

GoodSister · 03/09/2021 22:27

Happy Friday, 6 for me

  1. Frozen breakfast mix of fruit on yogurt
  2. Apple
  3. Banana
  4. Mixed salad
  5. Peas
  6. Sweetcorn

TheNarwhalBalloon · 04/09/2021 12:57

I'm so on it today.
B: strawberries, grapes (2)
L: sausages, hash browns, (they are cauliflower ones but very processed so I don't think they probably count?), a huuuuuge grilled mushroom, and wilted spinach (3 in portion size)
Dinner is going to be a fake chicken pie but I'll make sure there's loads of steamed veg with it (3)
So I need another 2 portions which I will probably have in fruit.

Happy rainbow eating everybody 🌈

That's a good haul partime

I have decided to step back a little with needing to get to 10. If i make it all good but if I don't it's fine. It's been a good thing though to let me see how little changes can make a difference.

I also won't make anything like it today but I'm happy to take Sundays off.

I’m not participating at the mo as I’m away for a long weekend and it’s too difficult whilst eating out so much. However, this weekend is the first time I’ve eaten lotus root - very tasty. Back with you mid week.

Breathmiller · 05/09/2021 16:54

Enjoy your trip away wilderness Smile

Hello folks, hope all are doing well this week?
I'm feeling a bit under the weather but trying to get my f and v in, I'm sure it will help.

B: smoothie with spinach and pineapple (1 or 2 depending on rules!)
L: veg soup with carrot, broccoli, cauli, leek and chickpea. I left it fairly chunky and it was 3 portions.
D: vegan meatballs with peas, corn, carrots and broccoli and some hummus (3)
an orange (1)
I think that's 8.

Wildnerness I've never even heard of lotus root! What was it like?

MinesAMassiveSalad · 07/09/2021 21:27

1 Plums (x 3 as we have a glut!)
2 Blueberries
3 Apple
4 Lettuce, spring onion, avocado
5 Carrot
6 Tomato passata
7 courgette, red pepper
8 black bean, shallot, mushroom, garlic

This has been an interesting experiment for me to double and sometimes triple the f and v I'm eating. It's not a panacea but overall I feel more energetic.

I am going for salads when eating out and I have mostly avoided the sandwich for lunch which had been my lifelong habit. I was at home today and put together a salad without thinking about it.

Washing and chopping the veg earlier than I think necessary has meant I'm doing more. (Everyone else has been snacking on carrot sticks too which is a bonus!) It's also motivating to have easy prepped stuff or leftovers in the fridge.

The easiest change has been doubling the onion or shallot I put in recipes. I'm all for the easy and cheap wins.😉 And fresh, homegrown stuff is always an enticement. I'll try to grow more next season.

Happy eating to all!

PartTimeDomesticGoddess · 08/09/2021 20:37

Still clocking a solid seven most days here, but am still enjoying thinking about it more than I did before (and enjoying the challenge!)

  1. Kiwi/blueberries
  2. Mango
  3. Dates
4/5/6. Pollen and grace salad box with extra beetroot
  1. Tomatoes
  2. Spinach
MinesAMassiveSalad · 08/09/2021 21:10

The Pollen and Grace boxes look like a great idea!
My tally today:

1 leftover veg, spinach, mushroom
2 Apple
3 Tomatoes, spring onion, avocado
4 Green salad 3 times so I did eat loads today!
5 Pak choi
6 Plums, fresh and baked in crumble,so multiple portions really.

Kept up the volume by double greening rather than double carbing😄: both salad and cooked greens with breakfast and dinner.

EatSprayGlove · 08/09/2021 22:05

I'm definitely finding this easier now I'm writing it down, I've got a veggie notebook!

Breathmiller · 08/09/2021 22:46

Well done everyone. I had a few days off, I still ate some fruit and veg but wanted a break from noting it down.

Back on track today though...

  1. Passion Fruit
  2. Pear
  3. Sultanas
  4. Dates
  5. Tomatoes
  6. Cucumber
  7. Brocolli soup
  8. Mango
  9. Houmous
10. Celery 11. Red pepper 12. Carrot

I wasnt home til late tonight and as I was waiting at the next town for my DS to get off the bus, I waa severely tempted by a bag of chips at the chippy. But dh had a feast made at home for me of veg and houmuss. And little mango and passion fruit pastries. All much more delicious than greasy chips.

Even though I’m not achieving anything like double figures, I am definitely getting at least my 5 a day in which is what I wanted to achieve, plus more variety.

  1. Orange juice
  2. Apple
  3. Salad leaves
  4. Tinned tomatoes
  5. Onions, spinach
  6. Mushrooms
Breathmiller · 10/09/2021 07:05

I love tgis. A veggie notebook. 🙂

I have a note on my phone called "veg'n'fruit" . You're right, it definitely helps to write it down.

OP posts:
Breathmiller · 10/09/2021 07:07

wilderness yes, I agree. If I hit 5 then I'm happy enough. I'm not pushing it if I'm not hungry.

It does show how difficult 10 a day can be though. But I am finding 5 a day much easier than before.

PartTimeDomesticGoddess · 10/09/2021 07:19

  6. Romaine lettuce, lime, coleslaw (made from carrot and broccoli stalk)

  1. Kiwi
  2. Blueberries
  3. Beetroot
  4. Spinach/lentil soup
  5. Apple
  6. Dates
7/8. Chickpeas/onion/tomatoes/jackfruit

Yes it's changed my perception of five a day.
1 Avocado, blueberry
2 Red pepper, tomatoes, lettuce
3 Carrot, Onion
4 Broccoli
5 Plums

I would have said a poor day but still managed 5 through a salad with leftovers at lunch, some veg with dinner plus the obligatory plums..

Out shopping for greens tomorrow!
