Eating our 10-a-day thread

Breathmiller · 30/07/2021 10:37

I would like to try to start a project of getting my 10-a-day of fruit and veg in every day.

Anyone fancy joining me? I find groups on here of support so useful.

I know lentils and beans and chickpeas are part of it too so I will up them. I'm vegan so I'm hoping that should make things easier as I eat lentils as part of my diet anyway.

This thread is for everyone who would like to focus on 'eating the rainbow' as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Or anyone who does this already who has any hints and tips?

When the fresh sweet corn season is over, I can really recommend M&S frozen sweet corn. It’s delicious!

Someone gave me a ton of green runner beans a few days ago, and I made this great Turkish dish with tomatoes, onions, garlic and green beans (obvs). Am eating it hot or cold.

Turkish Green Beans

Tbh, the Turks do great stuff with veg. It’s a cuisine worth checking out.

Wildernesstips · 11/09/2021 19:20
  1. Avocado
  2. Orange juice
  3. & 4. Beetroot and black bean (made my own patties)
  4. Romaine lettuce and homemade coleslaw
MinesAMassiveSalad · 11/09/2021 20:51

Beetroot and black bean patties sound good to me.

1 Mushroom, onion
2 Red pepper, mixed greens + romaine
3 plums X 3!
4 Broccoli
5 Rainbow chard, blueberries

Just two meals today, brunch and dinner as doing IF.
Bought plenty of veg too.🥬🥦🥒🍅And we've planted up some kale! Just waiting for the wildlife 🐌to eat them😂

If our beans ever come to anything I'll try that ByeBye.

TheNarwhalBalloon · 11/09/2021 22:01

Evening folks, good to read all of your rainbow eating. I was ill most of the week so had to rely on Mr Narwhal for meals and he's not as generous with the veg as I am. Plus I ate quite a lot of rubbish while I felt miserable.

But today I had 2 portions fruit for breakfast, and a fab salad bowl for lunch with lettuce, tomatoes, hummus, coleslaw, tofu, bean salad, mango, raisins and celery. It weighed 400g so I'm hoping it was about 5 portions. Dinner was a burger but 2 portions of steamed veg with it - cauli carrots and corn. A respectable 9 and I might have an orange before bed.

MinesAMassiveSalad · 11/09/2021 22:23

Well done Narwhal, showing us how to do 9/10!

I know I need more pulses in my life.

Breathmiller · 11/09/2021 23:07

Glad you feel better narwhal

I had a respectable 10ish today. Went to my friend's for dinner who is an amazing cook. I think there might have been lots more variety in there but I'm not sure what. It was all so delicious. Tom Yum soup. Followed by a butternut squash and pak choi thai curry. With a beautiful thai salad. Papaya, ice cream and mango sorbet for afters.

  1. Plums
  2. Juice/smoothie (spinach, broccoli, lime, cucumber, parsnip, courgette, apples, avocado)
  3. Mushrooms
  4. Pak choi
  5. Celery/spring onions
  6. Butternut squash
7/8. Salad leaves/baby corn/other salady things. Maybe two portions all told.
  1. Papaya
10. Mango (sorbet if it counts? )

HI all can I join in please?

I'm very loosely following slimming world and also just generally trying to eat more healthily. Are we aiming for 10 different fruits and veg or 10 portions? I'm not aiming for 10 at the moment but 5 as a minimum

We get a weekly veg box which is sort of forcing us in a good way to eat more veg and be more creative. Tonight we are having shepherds pie not homemade though with carrots cauliflower and cabbage

We also got a squash in the veg box I think its called an uchi kuri so debating making soup with that for lunches. We also grow a lot of our own produce and have a glut of courgettes at the moment and we really like a courgette lentil haloumi salad so might make that in the week aswell

MinesAMassiveSalad · 12/09/2021 12:36

I think the original advice is based around consuming portions by weight (80g so 800g per day) while ensuring a breadth of different types, hence the "eating the rainbow" phrase.
Sweet potatoes count, white don't ( I object to this 😂, love the 🥔.
Pulses only count once as does a juice or smoothie.
Focus on veg rather than relying too much on fruit.

MinesAMassiveSalad · 12/09/2021 12:41

I keep peaking at about 7 or 8 portions. The target has been helping me though. I have some health conditions that are focussing my mind on this too. I'm eating far more f and v than before.

Breathmiller · 13/09/2021 08:04

Welcome weedsforwishes

Yes, as said above 10 different varieties, each a portion size. There is a link on the first page to the NHS guidelines of qhat constitutes a portion. I find it a bit odd sometimes, 1 celery stick but 10 radishes for instance. And 30 olives!!
Smoothies and juices only count for 1. As do brans and pulses.

I'm also peaking arojnd 7 or 8 unless I really try.

Yesterday I had..

  1. Plums
  2. Lettuce
  3. Tomatoes
  4. Cucumber
5 red/yellow peppers
  1. Kidney beans
  2. Onions/raisins

Which is a lot better than I thought to be honest.

OP posts:
Wildernesstips · 13/09/2021 12:27

Yesterday:

  1. Tomatoes and mushrooms
  2. Clementines
  3. Carrots and peas
  4. Broccoli
  5. Apples and blackberries
MinesAMassiveSalad · 13/09/2021 20:18

1 Plums in all forms
2 Lettuce, tomatoes, watercress
3 Carrot
4 Onion, mushroom, garlic
5 Black beans, sweetcorn

Only managed a small salad today. Not living up to my name!

Weedsorwishes · 13/09/2021 21:09

Today wasn't too bad

Breakfast porridge with mixed seeds (1) and par on top (2)

Snack banana (3)

Lunch jacket potato with cheeses and coleslaw if that counts? (4)

Dinner fajita with spinach (5) and avocado (6) and hummus if that counts (7)

So 7 different types altogether probably not 7portions though as spinach serving wasn't a full portion

Debating making deliciously ella recipe this evening of chocolate avocado mousse as a slightly healthy TV snack but already had banana and avocado today

PartTimeDomesticGoddess · 13/09/2021 21:56

6 for me yesterday, but better today with 9 (veg box day always helps 😉)

Yesterday

  1. Kiwi
  2. Avocado
  3. Soup (lettuce/peas)
  4. Aubergine/tomato
  5. Nectarine
  6. Dates

Today

  1. Dates/banana (smoothie)
  2. Kiwi/blueberries
  3. Aubergine/tomato
  4. Beetroot
  5. Corn on the cob
  6. Courgette
  7. Cauliflower
  8. Broccoli
  9. Peas/carrot (accidental - cooked a bit too much for DH and DD!)
Breathmiller · 14/09/2021 13:18

Yesterday was almost not worth posting about. But in the thought of fairness and honesty I thought I'd admit my pitiful score 😆

  1. Mushy peas
  2. Onion

I had 2 jam doughnuts for breakfast and a chippy for tea.in mgly defence it was a long day clearing out my mum's house ready for it to be sold. And seeing my mum in the nursimg home. All with a 4 hour round trip.

Will try to do better today.

I think after a hard day like that anything goes!
AGreenerShadeofKale · 14/09/2021 17:45

Breathmiller sounds a tough day. It's all about long term habits, the odd day off will always occur.

I have namechanged due to salads feeling a bit passé! Today I'm eating out for dinner so who knows there. I hope I'll manage to choose something green.
So far: plums, black beans, watercress, spinach, tomatoes, carrot. I'd guess a good 3.

Breathmiller · 14/09/2021 20:32

Thanks both. A bittersweet day. Lovely to go through old memories but sad that things move on as they do.

Anyway, today has been...

  1. Raisins
  2. Leeks/onions
  3. Broccoli/parsnip
  4. Spinach
  5. Lentils
  6. Tomatoes
  7. Mango

PartTimeDomesticGoddess · 14/09/2021 22:34

@Breathmiller that does sound like a bittersweet day. I agree with @AGreenerShadeofKale (great new name btw) about the overall trend. And if you imagine the fruit and veg you've eaten in a week, or even a month, we're increasing overall - even with the days where life/circumstances dictate what we eat

8-9 today for me

Kiwi, blueberries, raspberries (2)
Bol dinner box for lunch - roasted cauliflower, Dahl, chickpeas, kale and some other veg - (3)
Dinner involved lettuce/cucumber, carrot, beetroot, tomato (3-4)

TheNarwhalBalloon · 15/09/2021 08:38

Morning folks.
Breathmiller in the circumstances 2 was an achievement! I hope today is less challenging.

I am still feeling rough, but trying to eat better and yesterday was a good one.
B: spinach and raspberry smoothie (1)
L: salad bowl of coleslaw, edamame, tomatoes, mango, raisins, celery, tofu (3)
Snack : plate of raw veg (this always bumps the total up nicely, I must get back into this as a habit) carrots, red pepper, cucumber, sugar snaps (3)
D: sausages, sweet potato, corn on the cob, carrots and broccoli. At this point I was pretty full of vegetables and actually moaned to DP about there being too much veg on the plate. Grin I couldn't finish it but I ate at least 3 portions.
Had a bowl of yogurt and a banana before bed which makes 11, i believe.

Wildernesstips · 15/09/2021 20:16

Yesterday was a non-starter as had a family funeral - think it was 2 at a push.

Today I thought would go a similar way as dropping DS to uni, however:

1-3: Poke bowl containing red cabbage, beansprouts, avocado, radish, green beans and carrots (guessing at 3)
4: Hummus
5-6: Lettuce, tomato, cucumber
7: Clementine

Gosh Narwhal hope you start to feel better soon, it’s really hanging around. Breathmiller sounds like it was a tough day for you yesterday.

Breathmiller · 15/09/2021 22:05

Wildernesss that sounds a difficult day too. I think we can let ourselves off in these situations. Hope the move to uni has gone well.

I seem to get stuck at 7 or 8. Here's today...

  1. Dates
  2. Tomatoes (various kinds)
  3. Apple
  4. Onion/peas
  5. Courgette/mushrooms
  6. Spinach
  7. Red/yellow/green pepper
  8. Passion fruit

TheNarwhalBalloon · 15/09/2021 23:49

Wilderness sounds like you are having an emotional week. I hope the funeral went as well as possible.

My eldest is going to uni next week - his first year. We did a lot of shopping for pots and pans etc today. Then had an evening out with a friend which was lovely but less good for f and v intake.

B: apple, strawberries with yogurt (1)
L: salad bowl with hummus, tofu, spinach, tomatoes, edamame, mango, celery, coleslaw (4)
Unfortunately that was it! I should have had my raw veg snack again, oh well, tomorrow is another day.

Think health stuff is behind me hopefully - this week it was mostly a migraine and low mood rather than anything major. Wishing everyone a good and rainbow filled day on Thursday.
