too good to go food waste app - anyone else use it?

Huge fan of this app - friend told me about it over lockdown and after I'd had my first "magic bag" I was hooked! The basic idea is that you pay for a lucky bag of food from a local retailer which would otherwise have gone in the bin. Picked up a bag from a M&S petrol station shop last night, cost me £4, got two large packs of salmon, two panini wraps, two packs of sandwiches, a side salad, a bag of mixed veg, and a pack of melon. Greggs also do bags which the kids enjoy - most of the bags we've had from there have a couple of the bakes, sausage rolls, cakes, pastries.

Yes it's all short-dated, yellow sticker stuff but lots can be frozen. Or eaten the next day. Definitely worth looking at if you're flexible about what you eat. Lots of restaurants do it too, although pick up times can be much later in the evening.

Any other fans???

Discovered there’s a greggs 5.5km away (I had app set to 5km as usually all too far away) for tomorrow. Hope it’s good

NotMyCat · 06/08/2021 18:05

Found this at booths too while I was waiting for the greggs collection!

This is my one from the budgets garage. Not large number of stuff but good choice.

Rump Steak
Curry ready meal
Ham mushroom pasta ready meal
2 mini tiramisu
1 yoghurt

They tend to be consistently quite good.

I have just realised that I collected my bag last night from the wrong place. Shock

It was a genuine mistake, I have three BP/M&S sites within 20 minutes and alternate between the three. And it was a really good bag too!! The lady obviously didn't check the code, as the app does say the store it refers to (I struggle to see this without my specs...) so she just told me to swipe to collect and I did.

So there's an uncollected bag at another BP garage for me, and some poor bugger who turned up after me would have been met by bemused looks.

DH is saying I'm going to be banned from the app. Grin

It only seems to be Greggs, Starbucks, Costa and Spar stores near us -the spar produce always looks on the turn when pop in there anyway so I certainly don’t want to chance their too good to go bag! I will try another Greggs one this weekend for teen, although ours don’t seem to put half as much stuff in as some of the pictures pp have posted .

I’m disappointed as there are also Sainsbury’s, Morrison’s & M&S nearby and none of them are listed. Anyone any idea why that would be?

PizzaPiePizzaPie · 06/08/2021 19:51

I picked up from the wrong Morrison’s once! The one in my town is miles away, where the one in the next town is really close to me. I’d accidentally ordered one for my town but picked up from the other.
No one seemed to care! The one I had they just made up as the ones they had were full of rotten food and the woman on customer services had noticed.

VenusSap · 06/08/2021 20:10

@pinatastick

The worst part was that we had to wait ages- they don't seem to have the bags ready beforehand, they just go round and fill a bag when someone goes in and asks for theirs. OH said he always has to wait but this one was a particularly long wait!
Morrison’s always have the bags ready in the ones Iv been in.
HoollyWugger · 06/08/2021 21:08

Three chunky pork chops priced at almost £8
Tub of potato salad £3 Shock
Loaf of "artisanal" bread
Fancy doughnut

I think there was something else but can't remember what Grin

clary · 06/08/2021 21:28

I've joined on the back of this thread - am becoming a bit obsessed!

Got a Sainsbury's one that was OK, then a Costa one that was a big triple club sandwich, and nice chicken salad sandwich and two very nice brownies for £3. Sandwich alone would be £3 and I took one to work and DS had the other.

But then I got a Little Waitrose one yesterday and they cancelled it Sad

You do need to keep looking and of course some times won't suit, depending on your plans, but I have now booked a Starbucks one which is one of the very nearest places to me for tommorow eve. Will report back :)

MorriseysGladioli · 06/08/2021 21:36

How can my stores all be gone, all of the time, every day?
Do you think my app might be dodgy, or do I live in a community of extreme frugaleers?

PizzaPiePizzaPie · 06/08/2021 21:41

@MorriseysGladioli are you taking note of what time they sell out. You need to be in the app before then constantly refreshing until they come available, they can go super fast.
I notice the greggs I follow sometimes adds more during the day which are random luck

MorriseysGladioli · 06/08/2021 21:44

Well, it usually says they sold out at 6.30pm ish.
It never seems to change, though.
Today I've looked throughout the day, and the stores still say sold out at 6.30pm.

clary · 06/08/2021 22:42

You need to look just before the time it says. I just bagged another Waitrose one from the local garage. The Starbucks one I mentioned regularly says sold out about 9-9.30 so that's when to look. It's the luck of the draw tho.

PizzaPiePizzaPie · 06/08/2021 22:48

@MorriseysGladioli I’d be on the app from around 6.20 and refreshing from then.

MorriseysGladioli · 06/08/2021 23:15

Right, thank you.
I'm determined now.
I WILL bag a bargain!

NotMyCat · 07/08/2021 16:59

Morrisons! I'm amazed
Bit gutted they packed the raspberries right at the bottom so they're total mush Sad
But I actually had carrots and celery on my shopping list for tomorrow Grin

Picked up greggs bag from the new greggs I found. Just brilliant.
3 bakes, scone, donut, cookie and a sandwich. More than happy with that.

I had the same happen to my raspberries too.

Looks like a good lot though

NotMyCat · 07/08/2021 17:38

Thought I would post what I'm using stuff for so it gives ideas

Strawberries and watermelon will be as they are
Stir fry veg pack and baby corn - adding to egg fried rice
Celery and carrots and leeks - beef stew
Salad - adding to wraps for lunch
Crispy potatoes - eating tonight with some beige breaded chicken and beans Grin
Cherry tomatoes - I eat these constantly!!
Tropical fruit salad has fizzed so binned

Flamingosarentreal · 07/08/2021 17:44

both my costas cancelled today- one within the collection time as i was on my way

Boobahs · 07/08/2021 18:52

NotMyCat · 07/08/2021 19:37

@TowandaForever I'm going to make them into a smoothie Grin I have some yoghurt that needs using up

pinatastick · 07/08/2021 20:13

clary · 07/08/2021 21:10

Two bags tonight, all sweet stuff from Starbucks that's good, Little Waitrose was really good, eight beefburgers, two fat sandwiches and a big bag of oranges.
