What do you do on a UK holiday?

Hemsbyboc · 26/06/2021 19:27

First time on a UK holiday in my life. Kids have never been out of the city they were born in unless in a plane.
They are bored to tears.
What do you do??
Don't want to say exact location but it is coastal wales and we have driven here.
Honestly don't blame the folk going abroad despite restrictions. We are climbing the walls.
Been to 4 villages, takes less than an hour to walk around each one. Shitty cafés, food like school dinners. Tide is in so looked at the sea. Everybody in full winter clobber. I am not investing in body boards cos I never want to come back. Wales match is not even showing anywhere. I am 90% leaning towards cutting my losses and going home tomorrow, I have decorating/gardening I could be doing.

Save us mnetters!

My kids (including a teen) would be fine to do what you've described and wouldn't find it boring. But then we have brought them up to enjoy those things, alwayswalk at lot at home, have a couple of UK holidays a year and also a foreign beach holiday. We are much more active in the UK, usually as it isn't so hot. Of course you need the right footwear, clothes and mostly attitude. It doesn't sound like you've jollied them on much. If you're all miserable go home, otherwise research something you'd like to see tomorrow and have a no wifi day.

latissimusdorsi · 26/06/2021 20:05

I have teens

Cycle rides/ mountain biking
picnics
White water rafting
Surf/paddle board in wetsuits
Boat trips
Crazy golf
zip wire
theme park
Local treasure hunt
Maze

MrsDThomas · 26/06/2021 20:06

Llanberis. Walk up snowdon/down rangers path/cynghorion/blwch maesgwm back into llanberis.
Dinorwig quarry
Betws y Coed and take a picnic to Llyn Elsi or Forest Coaster
Llandudno
Portmeirion

If these aren’t to your taste, you're in the wrong place

Mrscutesmummy · 26/06/2021 20:06

Also kite surfing is fantastic on the wide Sandy beaches of north Wales - plenty of wind and space! I love popping on a wetsuit and swimming out into the sea and just gazing at the mountains, I always feel so free and wild.

Hemsbyboc · 26/06/2021 20:06

Yes it is beautiful here. But what is the plenty to do without going back to the mainland? Other than walk around and shiver on the beach?

They have left the city they were born in many, many times just not to go to other parts of the UK

I cannot get my head around such a closed minded attitude.

Here are some ideas - Anglesey for teenagers www.dayoutwiththekids.co.uk/things-to-do/north-wales/isle-of-anglesey/teenagers

EleanorOlephantisjustfine · 26/06/2021 20:06

That’s Wales for you. I hate the place.

Treehaus · 26/06/2021 20:06

Surely you look at the amenities and activities available in the area before you book, just as you would for a holiday abroad? Confused

UserAtRandom · 26/06/2021 20:06

If you are in Anglesey you are near

  • loads of national trust type places
  • loads of castles
  • lots of outdoor activities (watersports, coasteering, climbing etc)
  • big zip line thing
  • slate mines
  • bounce below
  • national slate museum
  • Snowdonia - walk up Snowdon or enjoy other amazing countrside
  • Place with the longest name in the UK

just off the top of my head. My teens (boy and girl; different tastes) would love most of those. If yours really think it's all boring, can I suggest they need their horizons seriously broadening.

Scarby9 · 26/06/2021 20:08

Anglesey! Great - now we can start making more definite recommendations.
Have you been here: www.angleseyoutdoors.com/

Hemsbyboc · 26/06/2021 20:08

We will have to go back to the mainland by the look of it. They're is absolutely no tourists here ATM, such a shame

Cam2020 · 26/06/2021 20:08

Go somewhere with decent restaurants - top of my list.

Any boat rides, museums or towns/villages/ markets worth visiting. Mini golf, zoo or activity kind of place?

You really do need to research.

FleetwoodRaincoat · 26/06/2021 20:08

Sounds miserable OP. It's the weather that's more of the problem.

After one particular holiday in Somerset, where I found myself eating sandwiches outside a cafe in the rain, with my hood up, I decided UK holidays just aren't my thing. I can't bear hills and walking and freezing cold lakes and greyness and drizzle.

Give me a hot, dry sunny location any day of the week.

Susannahmoody · 26/06/2021 20:09

Liverpool isn't that far and is amazing

The docks
China Town
The Anglican Cathedral
Penny Lane
Sefton Park

DragonLegs · 26/06/2021 20:09

Llandudno ski centre? Ski/snowboard lessons plus a toboggan ride.

Beacon rock climbing centre

Drive to mountains and climb? Tryfan is a good one as there’s a fair bit of scrambling teenagers would enjoy.

Plas y brenin for canoeing, climbing and other outdoor activities. There is loads to do!

Rollerbird · 26/06/2021 20:09

Car boot sale tomorrow!!

Cam2020 · 26/06/2021 20:09

Missed out: check out trip advisor for decent places to eat.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 26/06/2021 20:09

Anglesey?!?

I’d give my fucking eye teeth to be in Anglesey at the moment.

Just go home and make more space for those who appreciate it.

Lovely234 · 26/06/2021 20:10

Ah this is such a shame. Board games and card games, films and make your own popcorn, a campfire on the beach with s’mores, canoeing…. Don’t go home! It’s what you make of it, you just need to get creative try new/different things

MrsDThomas · 26/06/2021 20:10

No tourists in Anglesey?! You having a laugh?

They contribute to the tailbacks every friday. They are there.

It sounds like you have already decided you don’t like the place nor appreciate its beauty.

Go home.

Iwant2move · 26/06/2021 20:10

How dreadful! It’s such a chore to drive over a short bridge back to the mainland.

Mrsjayy · 26/06/2021 20:10

Its fine to go further afield go off the island if you want you are not trapped.

Soozikinzi · 26/06/2021 20:11

Do they like fishing there are boats that go out sea fishing there's coarse fishing in Anglesey or crabbing from rocks . Could you go canoeing? Beaumaris castle is interesting. Hope you find something nice to do . Anglesey is beautiful - we were there last week.

beela · 26/06/2021 20:11
Confused

Having read the many helpful responses on this thread, and your determination to be certain that it's rubbish, I think you should go home, let your teenagers binge on their WiFi and get out of the way of people who actually want to be there.

MrsDThomas · 26/06/2021 20:11

@DragonLegs Tryfan is an absolute NO GO for OP. Seriously.
