What do you do on a UK holiday?

Hemsbyboc · 26/06/2021 19:27

First time on a UK holiday in my life. Kids have never been out of the city they were born in unless in a plane.
They are bored to tears.
What do you do??
Don't want to say exact location but it is coastal wales and we have driven here.
Honestly don't blame the folk going abroad despite restrictions. We are climbing the walls.
Been to 4 villages, takes less than an hour to walk around each one. Shitty cafés, food like school dinners. Tide is in so looked at the sea. Everybody in full winter clobber. I am not investing in body boards cos I never want to come back. Wales match is not even showing anywhere. I am 90% leaning towards cutting my losses and going home tomorrow, I have decorating/gardening I could be doing.

Save us mnetters!

@Hemsbyboc

Seriously other people's 13 year old are happy to be going for a walk as their holiday when it's the only thing they have done for a year and one half? I am not boring, I will walk all over, learn new things especially as I am not from UK. We had a lovely talk on rocks earlier by a volunteer and I loved it. Teenagers don't though. They just want to get back to WiFi and have fun. Rocks are interesting but not fun
My 14 yo would find that very interesting.

What a shame your DC rely on WiFi so much for their fun. After a year and a half of not much else my DC think getting out and about is a real treat. But then we’d all hate sitting on the beach or by a pool all day, that really would be boring

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 26/06/2021 19:55

We go for walks, climb hills and mountains (yes even with a teenager and yes they enjoy it), swim and body board, fossil hunt (the almost teen has a particular interest in this) we go to national trust places and museums, we explore, enjoy being somewhere new, find local history.

Though that's kind of what we do abroad too. What do you do abroad if not beach or explore? The last foreign summer we had before covid we were in Croatia and we did lots of local history, exploring roman ruins, more modern war history etc as well as swimming in the sea.

Everything’s open now, you don’t have to go for a walk - no wonder the kids are bored if you’re being so uninspired!

Surely there’s a zoo, a theme park, an arcade, a zip wire etc etc somewhere nearby where are you - you’ve got WiFi look on trip advisor

goteam · 26/06/2021 19:57

What would the teens be doing if you were abroad? Wales is great for active teenagers. Mountain biking, kayaking, sailing, paddle boarding, Go-Ape type places as others have said. Theme parks.

If you are in north Wales Abersoch is great for teens so it does rather depend where you are.

shinynewapple21 · 26/06/2021 19:58

I would second what @BreakfastOfWaffles says that planning really is key for UK holidays which obviously doesn't help you now .

Let us know in more detail where you are staying and people may be able to provide more positive support (and responses haven't really been very helpful )

Faffinator · 26/06/2021 19:58

I think @Scarby9 has it. We usually stump up for one or two adrenaline type things for the week, SUP/ surfing lessons/ mountain biking/ canyoning. Kids r then happy to spend rest of time on beach, go for meals, pod about and we watch boxsets if weather is terrible. Mine are mid teens.

HalzTangz · 26/06/2021 19:58

OP life is what you make of it, plenty have given good suggestions. Why not do a mystery tour, leave your accomodation and one person picks a direction to walk, at the next point where a direction can be picked, someone else chooses, and so on. Whilst on the tour get the kids to note down something that caught their eye, if end up on a beach loo for some interesting shells or pebbles the kids can have as a keep sake.

Or, be miserable and head home.

The choice is yours

PaddleBoardingMomma · 26/06/2021 19:58

Go home, you sound miserable and boring.

TwigTheWonderKid · 26/06/2021 19:59

There's loads to do in Wales - where are you?

Mrsjayy · 26/06/2021 19:59

I mean if you say roughly where you are maybe people can tell you whats where.

itsamegladon · 26/06/2021 19:59

Wow!

Mine are 15&13 and love our coastal holidays in the uk.

The 13yr old will rock pool, crab and just enjoys the beach.
The 15yr old will swim, climb and generally fart about quite happily.

We walked and clambered about.

We read, play cards, board games light a fire.

Only boring people get bored.

Hemsbyboc · 26/06/2021 19:59

We are in anglesey. I cannot put my shirt on I am Danish Grin we are outdoor people but wow, this is something else, we have walked, and walked and walked. They are bored.
They have left the city they were born in many, many times just not to go to other parts of the UK. We thought we would do our best to stay in the country for holidays, invest in economy, see the country etc but I now see why we have never had the urge before. It is beautiful and yes, I love the place but the teens are bored 😴

Is it Lleyn peninsula? My neighbour is there atm and I know it was cold and wet yesterday, and into today, but tomorrow is going to be sunny and warm!
If you are in N Wales there is loads to do, admittedly mostly outdoorsy but there’s Portmeirion, loads of castles, the railway up Snowdon, Zipworld at Penrhyn quarry, Llandudno ski/snowboard/toboggan run etc and plenty of lovely beaches,
(If not N then I can’t help, but do look stuff up!)

MrsDThomas · 26/06/2021 20:01

You sound like you don’t have any appreciation for the beauty Wales have to offer.

Instead of slagging the place off, tell us where in Wales you are and im sure us Welsh people can tell you where to visit.

Maddermax · 26/06/2021 20:01

You sound boring and lacking in imagination.

You are in Wales and therefore probably surrounded by dramatic and beautiful landscape you could be enjoying.
Climb a mountain.
Visit one of the very well preserved castles.
Go to the beach.
Go to an outdoor adventure centre.
Google nearby visitors attractions.
There is a good chance that there is far more to do where you currently are you than you normally do on holiday as it sounds like you just sit beside a pool.

Mrscutesmummy · 26/06/2021 20:02

Hi OP I haven't read the full thread so forgive me if this has already been suggested. I went to this place a few years ago and it was great fun a load of trampolines inside a slate mine and the world's longest zip wire.

www.zipworld.co.uk/adventure/bounce-below

A favourite in our family is a big sandcastle competition too. You all build sandcastles on the same line as big as you can as the tide draws in. When the tide hits the first you add a flag to each. Last flag standing wins.

I love north Wales it's one of my favourite places in the world... I might be weird though! Grin

MyDcAreMarvel · 26/06/2021 20:03

Anglesey is beautiful and plenty to do, are you on a wind up op?

Muchasgracias · 26/06/2021 20:03

As my granny used to say, “only people get bored”… Either you aren’t trying hard enough. Or your terms are spoilt.

Faffinator · 26/06/2021 20:03

If you have a car and money can you get as far as Zipworld in Bethesda? It's brilliant.

Sugarcoatedalmond · 26/06/2021 20:03

We’re recently back from a similar holiday (costal Wales) and had a great time! Weather was not terrible but not amazing (chilly at times)

We did:

  • mountain biking (took our own bikes) on purpose built off-road mountain bike trails
  • cycled from our cottage along the seafront (cycle path, so safe for kids), stopped for ice cream / coffee. Did this most mornings.
  • explored some local woods / park
  • DD went horse riding
  • visited 6 or 7 different beaches. Explored rock pools. Bit of swimming although it was quite chilly some days so we didn’t swim loads.
  • Played ball games & flew kite on beach.
  • coastal walks
  • bought & wrote postcards
  • read books & played with toys we brought from home
  • meals out

There were loads of other things on offer nearby that we didn’t do including archery, farm centres, pick your own strawberries.

We researched where we were going & had thought about what we were going to do before we arrived.

Mrsjayy · 26/06/2021 20:03

You need to get them to suck it up maybe get them to have a search to see what they want to do tomorrow let them organise the day.

Muchasgracias · 26/06/2021 20:04

Arrrgghh ….that should read ^^ only BORING people, get bored!!!

GiantKitten · 26/06/2021 20:04

Anglesey isn’t far from all the bits I’ve mentioned (though obv you’ll have to drive a bit) but has a few attractions of its own too. There’s an aquarium, and Beaumaris castle, and the station with the mad long name for a start!

Bedsheets4knickers · 26/06/2021 20:04

Rollerbird · 26/06/2021 20:04
