What do you do on a UK holiday?

Hemsbyboc · 26/06/2021 19:27

First time on a UK holiday in my life. Kids have never been out of the city they were born in unless in a plane.
They are bored to tears.
What do you do??
Don't want to say exact location but it is coastal wales and we have driven here.
Honestly don't blame the folk going abroad despite restrictions. We are climbing the walls.
Been to 4 villages, takes less than an hour to walk around each one. Shitty cafés, food like school dinners. Tide is in so looked at the sea. Everybody in full winter clobber. I am not investing in body boards cos I never want to come back. Wales match is not even showing anywhere. I am 90% leaning towards cutting my losses and going home tomorrow, I have decorating/gardening I could be doing.

Save us mnetters!

Are you for real op?!?

I actually consider it a duty as a orient to teach my kids about the amazing things in their country. We have had some wonderful
Holidays in the UK including

Surfing in Cornwall
Halloween in Whitby
Exploring Stonehenge
Walking in the Lake District
Walking on the North York Moors and Dales
Crown Jewels at Tower of London
Clipper along Thames
London Mail Rail
Safari at Longleat
Kayaking, crabbing and wildlife watching on Mull
Exploring the Giants Causeway
Titanic Quarter Belfast
Jersey Zoo
Edinburgh Fringe
Fossil hunting on the Jurassic Coast
Steam train over the Glenfinnan Viaduct
Glencoe

I agree only boring people get bored

Tinacollada · 26/06/2021 20:11

Why everyone is being so hard on the OP, I have no idea.

It's literally a difference in preferences and opinions.

For me personally; with two children that actually sounds like a nightmare holiday.
Being used to going on holidays abroad or holiday parks with organised activities; I too would be lost and my kids would be well pissed off.

Yes, others may have brought their children up in the great outdoors - and had the opportunity to explore all these things, and this used to this type of holiday - good for you!!

I'm not, and I don't apologise for it.

Good luck OP !

There you go - ten things to do indoors on Anglesey. Surely a couple of them must appeal?

Hemsbyboc · 26/06/2021 20:12

They have left the city they were born in many, many times just not to go to other parts of the UK

I cannot get my head around such a closed minded attitude.

Here are some ideas - Anglesey for teenagers www.dayoutwiththekids.co.uk/things-to-do/north-wales/isle-of-anglesey/teenagers

How is that a closed minded attitude? 🤔
Neither me nor their father are from the UK. They have been to many countries to see and stay with relatives. We have nobody else in UK and no rain to travel here before
Yes a weekend in sunny Barcelona to see Granny is better than a wet one in Wales. Shoot me

It’s not the school holidays yet. There would be much more going on if it was. Are your teenagers not supposed to be at school?

Plas Newydd on the Menai strait is lovely. Got a great backstory. Go canoeing or sailing on the strait.

MrsPsmalls · 26/06/2021 20:13

Are you any where near the zip lines and the inside a mountain trampolines? Though you do sound like tedious wankers tho so maybe don't go if you plan on spoiling it for other people.

But Spain has areas that are similar as in not much to do for teens, chances are you wouldn't bother booking there as you'd check what was available beforehand. The same principle here, it's not that inherently UK holidays are bad, but that you seem to have selected one which doesn't suit the things your family enjoy which seems a bit odd.
MrsDThomas · 26/06/2021 20:14

Did you not do your homework before booking?

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 26/06/2021 20:15

Well people are making suggestions to you OP. It's up to you whether you take them on board or not. You don't seem to be Hmm

MissJeanBrodiesprime · 26/06/2021 20:15

So you drove there… you can presumably drive to a further away location where there is something more to do or different walks? Your kid’s age is difficult at the best of times, may be you’re going to have to be more enforcing in how much screen time they have and how far you go for a walk. Take a picnic and make a longer day of it, Wales is beautiful they just have to see it and may be then they will take to it. I don’t mean to sound patronising, I struggled with my teens at that age and it was only during first lockdown when we were only allowed to go for one walk a day that walking really caught their imagination (I couldn’t believe it Grin ). Dont forget board games too. Shame about the weather and local cafes you’ve tried though.

Hemsbyboc · 26/06/2021 20:15

Thank you to everybody with constructive replies, we will drive back to the mainland tomorrow and do the trampoline thing I think

Honestly the weather is much better for the whole of next week. Not hot, but mostly sunny and quite warm.

BackforGood · 26/06/2021 20:17

Yes, at 13, mine would all have love this list

Last time I took my 2 to Wales, we:

*- climbed Snowdon

  • went on a RIB ride around Anglesey
  • visited a National Trust place
  • visited Caernarfon Castle
  • went to the beach
  • went kayaking at Llyn Gwynant
  • went down a cave system*
It was full-on and fun
MaMelon · 26/06/2021 20:19

Well there you go - MN did what you should have done before you went on holiday. See how little time it took?

And yes - a weekend in Barcelona is very different from a week on Anglesey. You’d probably find similar differences in London, Edinburgh, York, Liverpool… which you’d know if you explored the UK a bit more.

Iwant2move · 26/06/2021 20:20

There is a go-karting track not far from Rhosneigr on Anglesey. My kids learned to sail, went karting, body boarding, ocean kayaking, flying kites, cycling, played board games as a family, visited castles, Port Meirion, the Electric Mountain.
Now they have Surf Snowdonia, Zip World.
I live in North Wales and rent out holiday lets. The place is bursting with tourists.

AnneElliott · 26/06/2021 20:20

We love Wales - even teenage DS. Things we do include;
Steam train from Porthmadog
Slate mine and Big Pit
Snowdon
Bounce below
Castles
Boat trips from St David's.

@Hemsbyboc

We will have to go back to the mainland by the look of it. They're is absolutely no tourists here ATM, such a shame
Lol, you must be desperate if you are longing for other tourists. But why would they improve your holiday?
JackieWeaversZoomAc · 26/06/2021 20:21

Try to imagine what the 40 million tourists who visit uk most years might do, and do something like that.

All these "is it possible to holiday in uk" threads are very strange.

Faffinator · 26/06/2021 20:22

Don't know how old your kids are exactly but the zip wires at the original zipworld site are better than bounce below for teens IMO

I think British hols can be a bit shit in bad weather so I do have some sympathy.

Dyrne · 26/06/2021 20:22

What a bizarre thread.

Of course if you go somewhere having done zero research and planning, you’re going to have a miserable time - but that’s not a UK vs abroad thing. Hmm

Although I am grateful for the thread - have got some good tips for my next trip Grin

cantgetmyheadroundit · 26/06/2021 20:22

@insancerre

Wow
Yep.
shinynewapple21 · 26/06/2021 20:22

I don't know Anglesey well, we've only done day trip but can see someone has linked to website

I'd recommend driving to the zip wire/ bounce activity one day

Then another day to Llandudno where you'll find a pier , amusements . Crazy golf , cable car up great Orme

Schoolchoicesucks · 26/06/2021 20:24

Zipworld, canoeing or kayaking, SUP climbing or abseiling, surfing or windsurfing, mountain biking, Go Ape.

Interspersed with walking or hill/mountain climbing, visiting National Trust or castles or beach, clifftop walks.

If the weather's dreadful, indoor swimming, bowling or cinema, playing board games or card games (yes I know you can do those at home).

I know the world is a large place with so many amazing places to explore, but to exclude everywhere outside the city you live in, in the country you live in is a peculiar decision.
