What do you do on a UK holiday?

Hemsbyboc · 26/06/2021 19:27

First time on a UK holiday in my life. Kids have never been out of the city they were born in unless in a plane.
They are bored to tears.
What do you do??
Don't want to say exact location but it is coastal wales and we have driven here.
Honestly don't blame the folk going abroad despite restrictions. We are climbing the walls.
Been to 4 villages, takes less than an hour to walk around each one. Shitty cafés, food like school dinners. Tide is in so looked at the sea. Everybody in full winter clobber. I am not investing in body boards cos I never want to come back. Wales match is not even showing anywhere. I am 90% leaning towards cutting my losses and going home tomorrow, I have decorating/gardening I could be doing.

Save us mnetters!

Do you actually want ideas or do you just want to moan that the weather is disappointing? Because if it's the former you are going to need to say where you are.

NeverSurrender · 26/06/2021 19:41

We've always found plenty to do on uk hols! Local attractions, beach , beauty spots, meals out , seeing parts of the country we haven't seen before, going out for walks in the evening , relaxing and having time together as a family without work or cleaning etc. We do like spending time together though and enjoy each other's company ( most of the time !)

CeeceeBloomingdale · 26/06/2021 19:41

I can't imagine this will be any help but we go for long walks, rock pool, climbing rocks on the back, visit local attractions, learn more about what weve visited by looking things up online or in books we buy, talk to each other, eat leisurely meals, play card games, look at wildlife and learn more about what we find, read books, enjoy being outdoors, explore quirky local shops, chat to locals, paddle, plodge, build sand castles, take photos all together etc etc

SummerHouse · 26/06/2021 19:42

I wish I knew Wales but I have only been once, ten years ago. You can check tide times online. Go at low tide and just let the coast envelope you. Just spend hours looking at stones and then can you do a nice meal at wherever you are staying? Then a really nice feel good film. You need to reset. You can save this. Just find anything that makes you happy, do it, and be happy. Sorry no practical suggestions at all. What age are the DCs?

LEMtheoriginal · 26/06/2021 19:43

Wow only boring peole get bored.

KateTheEighth · 26/06/2021 19:43

LawnFever · 26/06/2021 19:44

Kids have never been out of the city they were born in unless in a plane

What on earth do you do for days out at weekends? You can’t seriously never have taken early teens out on day trips in the Uk anywhere ever? Confused

NeverSurrender · 26/06/2021 19:44

We just crack on with plans if the weather is crap, try and make light of it so the kids enjoy themselves! They aren't bothered by rain in face dd says she prefers it! You are really unlucky if it rains the entire time though, it would be a bit miserable every day.

Scarby9 · 26/06/2021 19:47

There are so many action sports type activities in Wales ideal for teens, so if you tell us your nearest big town, or just the region, we could make suggestions.

MaMelon · 26/06/2021 19:47

What on earth do you do for days out at weekends?

Very good point! OP - you *must have gone to other places in the UK for days out or short breaks?

People come to the UK from all over the world for holidays and find things to do - use your imagination.

MyDcAreMarvel · 26/06/2021 19:47

@Hemsbyboc so you and your children have never been on a day trip , to a beach, a theme park a zoo, a museum, a castle, a country park, a water park, gone hiking up a hill etc never eaten in a restaurant , had chips in the sea front etc etc etc. Because you do that and sleep somewhere other than home. Hth.

Mrsjayy · 26/06/2021 19:49

We used to book places that were going to be interesting to the kids we would look for a zoo , museum ,beach, nice walks and arcades piers , we would play cards /games in the evening. It sounds like uk holidays are not for you or the teens you sound miserable.

Hemsbyboc · 26/06/2021 19:49

Seriously other people's 13 year old are happy to be going for a walk as their holiday when it's the only thing they have done for a year and one half?
I am not boring, I will walk all over, learn new things especially as I am not from UK. We had a lovely talk on rocks earlier by a volunteer and I loved it. Teenagers don't though. They just want to get back to WiFi and have fun. Rocks are interesting but not fun

Welsh seaside in the rain ... I feel your pain, OP.

shinynewapple21 · 26/06/2021 19:49

If the tide is always in you need to check tide timetable for when it's out so you can play some sports on the beach (you can google this on your phone )

If you have older DC I would have thought walking was a better bet as they would be able to manage a decent length walk - although you may not have proper equipment (boots/waterproofs)

We've always done variety of holidays but with younger / early teens DC have always checked that there were rainy day activities in the area and accommodation with decent WiFi or at least DVD player .

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 26/06/2021 19:50

I realise they are money pits, but is an arcade an option as a one off, here's a tenner (change to amount of choice) when it's gone it's gone basis? Our kids used to get very twitchy if they were away from a good wifi signal, so a chain coffee shop while they overdose on Youtube etc?

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 26/06/2021 19:51

They've never left the city they were born in?! Holy fuck

sluj · 26/06/2021 19:52

Just put your football shirts on, buy some cheap gin and pretend you are at that lovely all inclusive in Benidorm which is clearly more "your thing "
I actually feel insulted on behalf of beautiful Wales 😍

BlowDryRat · 26/06/2021 19:53

Last time I took my 2 to Wales, we:

  • climbed Snowdon
  • went on a RIB ride around Anglesey
  • visited a National Trust place
  • visited Caernarfon Castle
  • went to the beach
  • went kayaking at Llyn Gwynant
  • went down a cave system

It was full-on and fun.

Mrsjayy · 26/06/2021 19:53

What do they do on their su ny holiday? BTW teenagers are always bored and want the WiFi!

shinynewapple21 · 26/06/2021 19:53

Can you say where exactly you are staying OP as people may have more specific ideas of activities .

BreakfastOfWaffles · 26/06/2021 19:54

As PP have said, advance planning is key on a UK holiday, which isn't much help for you this time round. I don't know if this is helpful for next time, but I normally do these things:

  • Google "visit (place-name). This usually takes you to the local tourist board, where you can see things to do
  • Book a couple of days out ahead of time. If in North Wales, that could be the Bounce Below trampolines, the surf lake or the big zip wire, for example.
  • Buy second hand wetsuits before you go. You almost always need a wetsuit on a UK holiday to extend the time you can spend in the sea!
FrothyB · 26/06/2021 19:55

What do you do on a foreign holiday? If it's purely laying at the beach and swimming in the sea then yeah, you're kind of shit out of luck in the UK for the most part.

I tend to find the UK quite beautiful, and you can find history or interesting things everywhere if you're open to finding it. Wales should have plenty of activities for children to do. Whether they are open or not at the moment is down to Covid rather than it being a UK based holiday.

Although it sounds like you're more used to city life, as you mention your children never leaving the city they have been born in unless on a plane. I assume that your normal destinations are resorts where everything is contained on site, or to cities in other countries. In which case a small seaside resort or a rural holiday anywhere will likely be difficult to adapt to.

We went camping the other week to Lincolnshire with an 18 month old and a dog. We had a couple of days on site just enjoying the sun, having campfires, open fire cooking, walking round the local area. Then a day at the seaside, a visit to Hull Aquarium on another day. Was a lovely week.

HalzTangz · 26/06/2021 19:55

@PhillipPhillop

Surely you looked at what was in the area first before you booked?
This. Up to last year I've always holidayed abroad, but always do my research before travelling. I like to be able to plan at least one activity a day, so wouldn't go anywhere that didn't offer that
