Next door asking for WiFi password

Just want to start by saying I would do anything for anyone but I’m not quite sure we have done the right thing. Last night next door knocked on asking if they could have the WiFi password. I didn’t answer as I was upstairs, so DP did and he gave it her. Now, they aren’t my favourite people (putting that nicely) I put a thread a bit back saying how much of a nightmare they are. Not really sure why DP gave it her to be honest. I’m really paranoid now they have it. Does anyone know if they could do anything dodgy with it? I might be sounding dramatic but if so, could I change my WiFi password and would that kick them off it?

You couldn't make it up!

It's taken that long to work that out!

Cancel the cheque!

Change the password.

TheQueef · 11/05/2021 09:15

I'm not completely convinced yet.
There could be some sensible conclusion.

Poor Sparkle needs to consider changing that password if we can't come up with owt.

Toothdrama · 11/05/2021 09:17

I think she needs to set fire to the router, leave her family and move country.... I cant think of anything else to fix the problem...

I mean she could change the password.... but that just seems too easy?

3unda3 · 11/05/2021 09:17

We had this with a neighbor before. She asked for it after having issues with her provider. I completely forgot until we got a knock on the door one day from a mutual friend of ours, asking for the password. We had changed our provider so the password changed and my neighbor wanted it again. Turns out she had decided not to get her own internet and had herself and her 4 kids and their tech signed onto ours! She had been giving it to visitors to her house!

I wouldn’t have minded if she had been open about it but she had said it was a temp thing while she sorted things out. She was quite offended when we told her no because I didn’t have it. Over the following days I got messages telling me how to find out the password, where to look and how to change it.

In the end I played stupid and told her I didn’t want to mess with it Cos hubby had sorted it and he was at work. She stopped asking after a while but was vocal about how terrible I was for keeping it for myself and my kids 🤦‍♀️

Tooth 🤣😂😂😂

3unda3
you see... I would've been rude at this point. And asked for payment for the time she had used it.

steppemum · 11/05/2021 09:22

You should change the password!! Wink

Has she come back to you to ask for the new one yet?

I'm laying a bet that she will be back. I give her 24 hours.
Anyone wnat to advance on 24hours?

winnieanddaisy · 11/05/2021 11:09

I'm 68 and not tech savvy at all but I've just been on YouTube which showed me a video on how to change our Sky broadband password. It looked quite straightforward.

Change password NOW.

They could access your devices through your router and, as a worst case, be downloading child porn or doing other illegal things through YOUR IP Address!

You do not need to explain to them. It's your Wi-Fi, you pay for it.

Grrrpredictivetex · 11/05/2021 12:50

AND STILL THEY'RE TELLING YOU TO CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD!

Thank Christ after 334 comments, someone comes up with this to get the OP out the shit.
OhRene · 11/05/2021 14:08

@Sparkles556 any knocks yet today?

Emmelina · 11/05/2021 14:16

If there’s been no knock yet, they may still be connected via the old code and will only prompt if they lose connection to it. Have you reset your router too? That will boot everything off.

Sparkles556 · 11/05/2021 14:18

@OhRene @Emmelina no, no knocks so far. I unplugged it from the wall, don’t know if that’s the same thing? When I changed the password yesterday, it knocked me and dp off ours and we had to enter the new password. Will that have happened to her?

PineappleWilson · 11/05/2021 14:37

Yes, should do. Is she working, so you're likely to get a knock about 7pm after they've eaten and sit down to browse the internet?

ProfessionalWeirdo · 11/05/2021 16:29

Do you mean you unplugged it from the phone socket or from the electricity socket? Unplugging it from the electricity will re-set it.

Please let us know if she has the nerve to ask again!

Change your password now. What if they access child porn or any number of other unsavoury business on the net? Your internet provider will have this data ... it's the extreme and it's not likely but unless you know and trust them why would you risk your gadgets being confiscated by the police to be checked?

MaggieFS · 11/05/2021 18:03

Mother of God.

@WinterStrawbsAreLikeTurnip

She has changed the password.

The potential issue of accessing unsavoury sites has been made many times in the previous 300 and something posts.

Were you not curious as to what the other 300 people might have said?
