Next door asking for WiFi password

Just want to start by saying I would do anything for anyone but I’m not quite sure we have done the right thing. Last night next door knocked on asking if they could have the WiFi password. I didn’t answer as I was upstairs, so DP did and he gave it her. Now, they aren’t my favourite people (putting that nicely) I put a thread a bit back saying how much of a nightmare they are. Not really sure why DP gave it her to be honest. I’m really paranoid now they have it. Does anyone know if they could do anything dodgy with it? I might be sounding dramatic but if so, could I change my WiFi password and would that kick them off it?

@SionnachGlic honestly I couldn’t believe the cheek. Not only does she not know us, but she takes the complete piss constantly with parties, arguing with her boyfriend, the lot. She either is that thick she doesn’t realise how much of a pain in the arse she is, or she just doesn’t care. Pure cheek

Change the password pronto. They could easily now get in and change the admin password. Essentially locking you out of your own broadband. It's not the first time I've heard of CFs knocking on neighbors doors asking for passwords.

Well I'm very sorry to have upset you. I'm not that well versed in mn I didn't know how many posts there had been or how to read just the op ones. I just wanted to ensure the op changed their password. I didn't have time to scroll through all the replies.

Not quite sure why you have to be narky with me. Hope it's made you feel good.

Well versed enough to post and then scroll to the end of the thread to see responses to your own thread.

I received an email, clicked on it & it took me to it, just like it did this time.

@MaggieFS

Cancel the cheque direct debit, put some penguin bollards around your house. Make sure your husband uses a penis beaker to atone for his stupidity. Oh, and have you thought of changing the password for the router? I suggest Bal0nz would be an excellent new one.
Haha brilliant
JustLookingThanks · 10/05/2021 22:18

People who are able to connect to your wireless router or network may be able to do the following:

  • View all the files on your computer or laptop and spread a virus
  • Monitor all the websites that you visit, copy your log-in names and passwords, and read all your emails as they travel through the network
  • Slow down your computer or laptop and the Internet connection speed
  • Send spam and/or perform illegal activities using your Internet connection

My neighbour has been amazing by giving me his password as a backup in case ours ever goes down (I WFH) and we've done the same for him. So if one network goes down we can use the other. It works for both of us. I wouldn't just let someone else use it for free, though. That's cheeky as fuck.

Happytobejabbed · 10/05/2021 22:33

It’ll be interesting to see what is said tomorrow.

Have a response ready - either the true reason or pseudo tech one - ‘our internet ran very slowly so we phoned up virgin/bt and they suggested changing the password and limiting our use ‘ sort of thing.

Cancel the cheque!!! Grin

CorianderBee · 10/05/2021 23:32

Why would he give her it? Change the password. What if they're accessing illegal material through your router and it's traced to your IP?

Jongleurterre · 10/05/2021 23:34

Your partner needs some help to be more assertive else he will be saying yes to all manner of things!

Mamanyt · 10/05/2021 23:44

Yes, they can do all manner of dodgy things with it. Change the password, and tell DP "DO NOT DO THAT AGAIN!"

angelfacecuti75 · 10/05/2021 23:52

Just change it. Job done.

MusicWithRocksIn1t · 11/05/2021 00:11

Glad you got it changed

Oh my god, this!

I get on well with my neighbours, but the most I've ever asked of them wifi-wise was to let me email some work I'd saved to a USB when I had no wifi while changing providers. I also bought a mobile dongle for temporary use. OP, your neighbour is a CF and you must change your password NOW.

@MaggieFS. Thank you! I have a new garden studio with its own router and need to put in a password. It will be Bal0n2! (Balonz)

Roussette · 11/05/2021 07:33

Please don't anyone else come on here and make the helpful suggestion to 'change the password' !!

Cancel the cheque!

It's quite comical and actually a little annoying when a poster will come along to a thread that is 5 pages deep and blindly comment without at least reading all of OPs post, and say something that would have blatantly already been said. Like none of the 100 previous posters would have thought to say the same thing 🙄
