Next door asking for WiFi password

Just want to start by saying I would do anything for anyone but I’m not quite sure we have done the right thing. Last night next door knocked on asking if they could have the WiFi password. I didn’t answer as I was upstairs, so DP did and he gave it her. Now, they aren’t my favourite people (putting that nicely) I put a thread a bit back saying how much of a nightmare they are. Not really sure why DP gave it her to be honest. I’m really paranoid now they have it. Does anyone know if they could do anything dodgy with it? I might be sounding dramatic but if so, could I change my WiFi password and would that kick them off it?

And this is AFTER you've changed your password, OP? Contact your internet provider straight away, and tell them there's a device you don't recognise. They might be able to help.

BelleBlueBell · 15/05/2021 16:30

Can you manage without your Wi-Fi? It might be sensible to unplug the router until you can sort it out.

I hope you're making your partner get it fixed, has he acknowledged what a bellend he was to hand out the password?

LookItsMeAgain · 15/05/2021 16:31

Turn off the broadband. Leave it off for 30 minutes. When you turn it back on again, see if the android device reconnects. If it does, get a laptop and using a standard enough Cat5 network cable, connect the laptop directly to the router and go into the router settings. See if you can disconnect the device from there.
If you can't disconnect it, contact your service provider and see if they can do anything for you.

Sparkles556 · 15/05/2021 16:31

@ProfessionalWeirdo yes so I’m half thinking it can’t be her but I can’t think of another explanation. I could kill dpEnvy

I don't know if this will help OP. Have a little read through, then maybe google your own device (router?) and see if it's the same info. As it looks slightly more complicated to get rid of completely.

Is there an option of blocking them rather than deleting for the moment until you figure it out?

custardbear · 15/05/2021 16:35

Have you tried changing the wifi again?

Your DH hasn't allowed her to attach to his phone passwords has he? Did he just give her the code to type in directly?

HumourReplacementTherapy · 15/05/2021 17:15

What did he give her?
Did he show her they key that also has the admin details on? 🤦🏻‍♀️
She'll be booting you off your own WiFi next.

MardiBras · 15/05/2021 17:22

Is your tv? I have a Sony tv that has an android operating system.

lurkingattheback · 15/05/2021 17:25

Did you need to download an app to check. Usually there's a way without having to add anything. Is the app secure?

BelleBlueBell · 15/05/2021 17:55

I wondered about that as I have a smart TV on my router but the OP says it's phone so I don't think it can be
CombatBarbie · 15/05/2021 17:59

Do you have a smart TV? That would come up as android.

MardiBras · 15/05/2021 18:02

@BelleBlueBell yes, good point , it should show as a smart tv not a phone. (and I should have read the OP’s comment more carefully!)

luxurychocolate · 15/05/2021 18:15

I'd unplug the whole thing for a day. See what happens. The. Reset factory settings then change the password again to something long case changes, characters, numbers etc

prh47bridge · 15/05/2021 18:18

Only if it is an Android TV. Many smart TVs are running other operating systems.
Whythesadface · 16/05/2021 10:06

If you changed the password, then someone in your house has added a device.
Maybe one of your children added a friend?

cupoftea2021 · 16/05/2021 10:28

Change the password for reasons mentioned.
I do not know about the Uk but my wifi password is imprinted under the router.

BluebellsGreenbells · 16/05/2021 12:00

Could it be an E reader device?

BelleBlueBell · 16/05/2021 12:10

Doesn't the device actually have to be connected the time to show up?

Do visitors who connect show up for ever even when they've left? I'd assumed @Sparkles556 meant a currently connected device

purplebunny2012 · 17/05/2021 18:04

@teawamutu

I noticed a network near me called "F**k you - get your own wi-fi".

Reckon the owner's read this thread?

Ours is "Oi bog off stop scanning me" DH named it that years ago
Trudij123 · 17/05/2021 19:22

My friend’s for a long time was “ fuck off James, you’re using it no more” 😂

me109f · 17/05/2021 19:27

They cannot access your internet stuff unless they have account control, and then know how to do it.
However, they can do masses of downloads and gobble up your broadband and thus degrading your speed of access.

Your neighbours are cheapskate arseholes. They are avoiding paying £30/40 per month by using your access for free. Anything they do is on your ip address so they can surf porn and run scams anonymously, and it can only be traced to you. Politely withdraw access, and don't fall for any whining persuasion.

This. Have you thought of changing the password?

Redwinestillfine · 18/05/2021 07:38

I'd give your DH the task of contacting the internet provider and sorting it out. He might think twice next time.

PhilCornwall1 · 18/05/2021 07:54

The ISP won't sort it out as there is nothing for them to do.

The OP changed the router password last week.

tanstaafl · 18/05/2021 08:35

Does it say android phone or android OP?
Do you have google home devices perhaps?
What about Alexa ?
