Is there anywhere on the coast that sells VEGAN fish & chips?

Hi, I’ve been vegan for years, but woke up this morning to a drizzly bank holiday weekend and have this yearning to sit on a beach eating fish & chips.

I know you can buy vegan ‘fish’ but I wondered if anyone knew of anywhere on the coast that sells it?

Many thanks.

@crackofdoom

I’m just trying to imagine myself, as a vegetarian, seeing a thread on here asking for recommendations for the best place to get a rare steak on the South Coast, actively deciding to click on it, and telling everyone on it how shitty their food choices are and how, disgusting, personally, I find steak. But I can’t see myself ever doing that- because I’m not a dick, I suppose Hmm
Precisely! People are such twats

@Yorkshireswithallroasts it's on Bryn Y Mor Road.

She's only open Friday to Sunday at the moment I think but it's seriously worth going there. Best. Chips. Ever.

BrittanyKAMA · 02/05/2021 19:00

Jeez, there are some twats on this thread. If you’re not interested in vegan food, then DON’T OPEN A THREAD ABOUT VEGAN FOOD!!!

Oh that’s super near me, I can’t believe I’ve never noticed it!

PopsicleHustler · 02/05/2021 19:01

My dream come true would be to find a fish and chip shop that doesn't cook the fish and chips in with the pork sausages!!!

LeanneBrownsLonelyBraincell · 02/05/2021 19:04

@Yorkshireswithallroasts pop along and give her a try.

The cafe is on Facebook and Insta if you fancy a gander at the menu.

I'm surprised really at the reports of long standing vegans accidentally eating chips cooked in dripping. It's a very distinctive smell, that of warm animal fat. There's a chippy near me that uses dripping and you can smell it outside.

BarbaraofSeville · 02/05/2021 19:16

I'm also surprised that vegans and vegetarians are apparently surprised/unaware that some* chip shops use beef dripping.

  • By some, I mean just about all of them in this county, because it's traditional and preferred by just about everyone, vegetarians and vegans excepted of course.
PattyPan · 02/05/2021 19:22

I don’t think it’s ever happened to me, but I live in the south in a town with a lot of minorities so places cook in oil here - I actually didn’t know about the beef dripping until I heard about it on MN and was a bit surprised because beef and fish don’t really go together in my mind. And my parents never had dripping at home when I was growing up, the only animal fat we had was very occasionally butter, so I wouldn’t be able to identify it by smell because I don’t think I’ve smelt it before.

BarbaraofSeville · 02/05/2021 19:28

Best way to recreate the smell at home is to buy beef dripping, use it to make your roast potatoes and leave the tray in the oven.

Next time you switch the oven on, you'll be wondering why your kitchen smells like a fish and chip shop.

BarbaraofSeville · 02/05/2021 19:36

Did the OP ever clarify which part of the east coast she is on?

Aberdeen?
Northumberland?
Yorkshire?
East Anglia?
Kent?

Fish and chips cooked in beef dripping don't taste beefy btw, they're just crispy, not greasy and flabby like many oil cooked ones seem to be and just tasty and very nice indeed. Unfortunately, everywhere else is usually a disappointment if that's what you're used to.

Yes, I'm surprised by that too. I've been asking the question 'what fat do you use to cook your chips in?' for about 30 years. Can't say I agree that most people prefer them cooked in dripping, though. Most places seem to use vegetable oil now anyway. Maybe it's cheaper?
MonkeyNotOrgangrinder · 02/05/2021 19:46

Yes PattyPan near me too. Lots of chip shops are Chinese owned and use veg oil. There is an English chippy which does use beef, or so I assume from the smell outside but that's more unusual in this area.

MonkeyNotOrgangrinder · 02/05/2021 19:47

Barbara presumably works for the dripping marketing board...?

RampantIvy · 02/05/2021 19:48

I think it is traditional to cook them in beef dripping in Yorkshire. I am happy to be corrected though.

RubyFowler · 02/05/2021 19:50

[quote LittleRa]Laura’s Fish Bar, Whitley Bay, has a vegan menu which includes a deep fried banana blossom as the “fish” and also has battered vegan sausage and other stuff.

I clicked on the thread just to mention this place!

SuperMonkeys · 02/05/2021 19:59

I think people were more entertained at the request for advice on where to eat without giving any details on where they were, and then asking whether there was anything to do in Brighton, as if the Op had never heard of it.

YesIDoLoveCrisps · 02/05/2021 20:02

@victopai vegan. Or at least bi-veggie VBV rights 🏳️‍🌈

YouJustFoldItIn · 02/05/2021 20:10

There is no such thing as vegan fish. There are just lumps of artifically flavoured, factory shaped plant-based protein stuff but it won't be fish and it won't taste like fish, so what's the point?

Just have chips, mushy peas and a bread roll. You can find that in any fish and chip shop.

If willing to stretch to vegetarian, battered halloumi and chips is delicious. Way better than cod or haddock.

I love halloumi but only someone who doesn't eat cod or haddock would EVER say that.

YouJustFoldItIn · 02/05/2021 20:16

One of the most revolting things I ever ate was vegan 'cream cheese' which my husband bought by mistake because it was called 'Better Than Cream Cheese.' Trust me, it wasn't 'better tha'n anything. It was utterly vile. One mouthful and it was spat straight out into the bin.

And don't get me started on shoes, bags and wallets etc labelled as 'vegan leather'. In my day it was just called polyurethane. Or plastic.

quizqueen · 02/05/2021 20:23

Why would anyone who is vegan or vegetarian want anything to eat that is remotely associated with fish or 'pretend' fish!!

PattyPan · 02/05/2021 20:25

An enjoyable seaside meal that didn’t involve killing anything?

Yorkterrier · 02/05/2021 20:36

Maybe they like the taste of fish but they don't want to kill stuff? It's not that difficult to comprehend.

Why not? Nothing died.
wagonwheelsforever · 02/05/2021 22:05

They sell battered sarcasm in the vegan fake fish shop in Brighton! It's sooo good 🙈
