Just in case anyone needs to hear this, stick your fingers up a dogs arsehole

Chat reaches more people than the doghouse.

Unfortunately a small pug was killed by a larger dog in Wolverhampton today Sad (loads of people tried really hard to intervene) It's also happened a couple of times near me (in Greenwich park and Crystal Palace park)

This happens occasionally and if you see it happening stick your fingers firmly up the anus of the dog being aggressive - they will very likely let go.

It's not fun, it is revolting. But it may save a dogs life if more people know about it.

Erm no. Have you ever seen a dog fight? You’re unlikely to get close enough to try this. And if you do you could
Well get bitten. There are far better measures. Throw water over them. Use a leash to lasso and remove aggressor. Grabbing back legs and remove dog that way.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 22/04/2021 13:23

Wikihow has this advice:

Approach your dog from behind and grab the top of its hind legs. Lift their back paws off the ground into a wheelbarrow position. Begin walking backwards, circling to one side so the dog will not be able to turn and bite you.
This works best if someone else is there to grab the legs of the other dog so you can pull them apart.
Never insert your arms into a dog fight, as you will get bitten.
You may also be able to use a leash looped around the hind legs to pull your dog out of the fight.
Once they have been separated, keep the dogs out of each other's sight. They may start to fight again when they see each other. Put your dog in the car or behind a closed door as soon as possible. Use a belt or a tie as a temporary leash if the dog does not have one, and if you are alone. tie one dog to an immovable object and remove the other dog to another location.

I think it works on people fighting in pubs too

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 22/04/2021 13:24

(Which is kind of what Wolfie said but longer Blush)

Sstrongtn · 22/04/2021 13:25

Erm. No.

stunnningandbrave · 22/04/2021 13:26

Obviously do not stick your finger up an aggressive dog's bum!

LaurieFairyCake · 22/04/2021 13:26

It's just another tool in the er..... arsenal Smile

Yes, there are a lot of things to try but you've no idea which one will work so you might have to try them all - some won't work because you don't have water etc

schroeder · 22/04/2021 13:26

I cannot believe you are seriously suggesting this. It sounds like a recipe for getting bitten to me.
I would be advocating for all dogs on leads rather than this.

LaurieFairyCake · 22/04/2021 13:27

They were both on leads Sad

It was in a town centre

OP posts:
Thelnebriati · 22/04/2021 13:28

Neither of those is safe or effective, please don't. You will be left with both hands full trying to control an angry dog which is not directing its aggression towards you. Neither tip explains how you are supposed to safely let go.

LaurieFairyCake · 22/04/2021 13:29

These were two dogs who don't know each other - if yours is the dog about to be killed then yes, you may prefer to be bitten than your dog be killed.

OP posts:
DownWhichOfLate · 22/04/2021 13:31

Eh? Someone actually did this?!

Thelnebriati · 22/04/2021 13:33

But neither is an effective method of breaking up a dog fight.

Operasinger · 22/04/2021 13:33

What stupid advice.

LaurieFairyCake · 22/04/2021 13:33

I have a Pug (a rescue), a very sweet and friendly dog and the lady from the rescue told me about it. She had about 60 years of rescue experience - she's an incredible behaviourist.

OP posts:
LaurieFairyCake · 22/04/2021 13:34

Yes, it makes the dog release its jaws (element of surprise)

The dog today had its jaw clamped around the smaller one

drinkingwineoutofamug · 22/04/2021 13:34

I got caught in between 2 dogs on leads having an argument ( one was mine)
I now have 2 broken fingers and aggravated ligament damage, due to lead wrapping round my hand.
At no point did I think of shoving my finger up the dogs arse

BettysCardigan · 22/04/2021 13:35

That just sounds stupid. Then you're crouched down on the ground with only one arm free to protect and/or balance yourself, and the other one is trapped around inside a flailing dog Confused

Weirdfan · 22/04/2021 13:35

They weren't both on leads, the attacking dog was loose.

ShirleyPhallus · 22/04/2021 13:35

It works on lions as well

With the wheelbarrow tip, I assume you don’t let go of the dog so you’re forced to find the nearest primary school, enter sports day, wait for the wheelbarrow race then win it. Give the medal to the dog which will cheer him up and he’ll forget the fight and calm down.

BearSoFair · 22/04/2021 13:44

I can see it'd definitely be effective...but not sure I'd try it! I'm thinking about my sister's dog, it's sometimes a 3 person job at the vet just to hold him still and express his anal glands!

MikeWozniaksGloriousTache · 22/04/2021 13:51

Has anyone ever seen this in action? It sounds like something someone made up and people have taken it as fact. Like the eating spiders in your sleep thing.

Also, i don’t know about all dogs but my dogs tail would massively impede access to said arsehole, it doesn’t seem practical and seems a good way of being injured yourself.

flippertygibbit · 22/04/2021 13:52

Before you attempt that you need to have the dog in a choke hold which puts your face to its and as such likely to have your face savaged.

Identify the dominant dog and throw a jacket /blanket over it's head. Dogs rarely fight what they can't see so this should give impetus to break the fight. Remove both dogs where they cannot see each other. This may mean your dog is left alone whilst you remove the aggressor into a separate area so it cannot return to your dog.

The wheelbarrow method can only be done by two people taking hold of the back legs and pulilng dogs away from one another. Keep hold of the aggressor dogs legs and remove the other to safety. The non-aggressor will still be in fight mode as it won't know who is holding its legs so be very careful.

If you are alone with two dogs fighting if you have a stick (I always walk with one), aim for it to be inserted into the aggressor dogs mouth.

Last option is only if you have sturdy footwear on and it's to wind the aggressor dog - even if this is your dog.

Please do your esearch.

I thought the Spitting Image team had released a new song Confused
