'One project a day' thread

... many years ago when i was first on MN I started (or maybe just actively participated in, cannot quite recall) a one (house) project a day. It made the most profound difference to my home. The project could be time consuming or not. It could take seconds, minutes or hours. I recall things like changing the lightbulb and lampshade in a hallway table lamp for example as a single day project. One day i also threw away holey and raggedy cushion covers and bought news ones. Little things, that really mattered.

If anyone is interested I wish to start another thread.

Today, as my one project a day, I cleared out my dehydrated and weed-ridden window boxes (2 of them). I put new compost in them and planted them with lobelia (obviously!); red geraniums and some dianthus. I am happy looking out (and in!) my front windows now. :)

I’m in!
Today I took DS to some car showrooms to see what small cars he will actually fit in. Now we have an idea of what we need to look out for.
I also went to a local nursery to try and get some bedding plants but they had none. All of my pots have died in the last week. I think they got frost damaged but also they are bone dry. I ordered some beautiful blown glass water dispensers to put in the pots when they are refilled. I also got a large bag of compost.
On my way home from work tomorrow I am going to go to B&Q to try and get some bedding plants and will start potting up my pots this week.
I also want to start a compost bin as our council are now going to charge for green waste removal.
I stripped some paint from our downstairs loo walls.
DH is working away at getting it redecorated so I need to find a large white tile as a backsplash.

Gottashiftit · 18/04/2021 23:29

Can i join? My project for tomorrow is to find the key for the windows in the front rooms so I can open the windows and let some springtime fresh air in. Thus should not be a difficult job but it is because I'll need to go through about 20 keys to get the right one then I'll need to find a stool to stand on to reach the window handles and shift the sofa so I can fit the stool in beside the windows.......

BlueLobelia · 19/04/2021 06:24

@Wildernesstips thanks so much for the tip! I am now thinking...... maybe standard roses. Hmmmm. B&Q on the way back from the school run.

Welcome everyone! I am so delighted to see you all. :)

@Gottashiftit the searching-for-the-key project is exactly the sort of thing I put off. :)

Love this! Definitely need to join in! Today I will pull out all the shoes and coats from the shoe / coat rack that my son has outgrown and either dump or put on charity shop box.

farfromthenoise · 19/04/2021 06:36

This is what I need!

Today I’m going to put my winter clothes away and take anything I didn’t wear to the charity bin. If I don’t do it now then I keep everything for next year, just in case.

Tocktickclick · 19/04/2021 06:45

I need this. Today I'm going to clean out my car. Great thread, thank you!

partyatthepalace · 19/04/2021 06:47

Ooh yes - this is totally what I need! Thank you 👏🏻

Today I am going to move the boxes out of the hall and put the contents of one box away.

ChampagneCommunist · 19/04/2021 06:48

I am going to return a parcel to Amazon

toomanyhobbies · 19/04/2021 07:12

✋ Hi can I join. I try to follow the organised mum method (but fail). My jobs for this week are:
Change Ds bed
Sort out the basket in the dinning room of stuff that needs putting away
Put all the camping lights away that we got out due to a power cut a few weeks ago
Go shopping for summer bits for Ds
Take back clothes that don’t fit and exchange
Pair up socks and put away
Take photos of clothes that are too small for Ds and see if friend wants any
Clear car out of rubbish
Hoover car
Towels away

Allthefilmsarecrap · 19/04/2021 07:48

Another job I did yesterday was put all of our Christmas bedding, pjs and clothing into a massssssive vacuum storage bag to go up into the loft. It was great to get them out of my bedroom. Had been planning to do this since the beginning of the year but couldn’t find the storage bags till yesterday Confused

Trying to think of one for today. Hopefully I can get some inspiration from others on the thread. There’s a million and one jobs I need to do but none are coming to mind right now.

Divineswirls · 19/04/2021 08:37

I've impulse ordered a garden swing seat so that will be a project to put together later this week. Today I'll make sure the garden is ready for it.

I've got annoying little piles of things in my bedroom, kitchen and living room which are the result of a recent decluttering but still need to be dealt with.

I need a two seater sofa in my living room and now I'm wondering if I might use the garden seat indoors instead. I'm liking this idea. Is it a bit bonkers ?

AsMuchUseAsAMarzipanDildo · 19/04/2021 08:37

Excellent idea! Have just moved house so my job for today is to unpack and sort out my stash of wool and fabric.

Sparklynewname · 19/04/2021 08:39

@Allthefilmsarecrap maybe next year you could put the storage bag underneath your mattress when you get out your bedding and then you know where it is when it comes time to put it all away?

I have an unplanned annual leave day now so I am actually sitting outside Dunelm right now waiting for it to open so I can pick up a new crockery set.

HasaDigaEebowai · 19/04/2021 08:47

I'm joining. We always do masses of jobs at the weekend but still not managing to get through everything. If we add a job each day then we might actually manage to get on top of things. This evening we will finish sanding the garden table (first sand and wood filler applied yesterday).

Allthefilmsarecrap · 19/04/2021 08:53

Fantastic idea @Sparklynewname! Thank you Grin

QuiltingFlower · 19/04/2021 08:55

Count me in, please. I have just noticed lots of cobwebs in the hallway - it’s quite dark and the spiders have been busy.....

First challenge is to find the extending handle thingy for my duster!

Good luck everyone.

Catname · 19/04/2021 09:08

I’d like to join too please. I’ve got so many jobs to do around the house and garden but I like the idea of committing to one (and hopefully taking advantage of momentum and doing more as a PP said).

Today I have a pair of jeans to package up and return.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 19/04/2021 09:10

Thanks for this OP.

Today I shall take down 3 round glass lampshades that are sorely in need of a good wash and I suspect have the odd dead daddy longlegs inside. I’ve been looking at them for weeks and putting it off because it’s such a faff getting up there and unscrewing the lightbulbs first.

Not that I’m just a lazy baggage or anything....

Octodog · 19/04/2021 09:14

Today's project is first trip to the foodbank. Was meant to do conservatory but food is the priority.

Then to find and list two items to sell on Marketplace

Gottashiftit · 19/04/2021 09:42

I’ve been looking at them for weeks and putting it off because it’s such a faff getting up there and unscrewing the lightbulbs first

That's like me with the window unlocking and opening, the actual job takes 3 minutes, the faffing around either side takes half an hour

RunningKatie · 19/04/2021 09:50

This is a great idea, I'd definitely like to think I can do this!
Today, I am going to:
Take photos of things for sale & work out prices
Dust landing light (many cobwebs)
And check what time dc swimming lessons, get bags out and be organised for tomorrow!

SausageDogSandwich · 19/04/2021 10:01

I'm not doing a project a day but have been consistently tackling my to do list over the last few weeks.

I don't put myself under pressure to get everything done as the list is huge. If I don't get something finished I keep pushing it to the next day to work on it again.

I'm not particularly dynamic but the slow and stready approach definitely works for me.

Squirrel26 · 19/04/2021 10:23

I need to join in with this. I feel like every time I do something, it sprouts another job and nothing is ever finished and it stresses me out.

Tonight when I get home I’m going to find out exactly what kind of light bulb the stupid living room lamp actually needs. I bought a £5 one because it ‘looked right’ and I CBA to investigate properly. Put it in and it immediately blew. Well done me. Hmm

EastofEdna · 19/04/2021 10:50

My projects for the day are:

  1. Get a ladder up to the bedroom window and remove masking tape from painting the inside frames weeks ago. The new window cleaner removed glue from the outside of one the windows (from 'fake' leaded window effect on the outside of the windows) that has been there for 17 years! It looks sparkling.
  2. Start to sand down my bed ready to paint - all the stuff is here ready to do.
2020nymph · 19/04/2021 11:14

I've emptied one of the many bags/boxes of clutter that needs sorting out.
