'One project a day' thread

BlueLobelia · 18/04/2021 12:51

... many years ago when i was first on MN I started (or maybe just actively participated in, cannot quite recall) a one (house) project a day. It made the most profound difference to my home. The project could be time consuming or not. It could take seconds, minutes or hours. I recall things like changing the lightbulb and lampshade in a hallway table lamp for example as a single day project. One day i also threw away holey and raggedy cushion covers and bought news ones. Little things, that really mattered.

If anyone is interested I wish to start another thread.

Today, as my one project a day, I cleared out my dehydrated and weed-ridden window boxes (2 of them). I put new compost in them and planted them with lobelia (obviously!); red geraniums and some dianthus. I am happy looking out (and in!) my front windows now. :)

Back to report that I did switch over my winter and summer clothes and I timed myself as I always put it off as I think it takes ages. It took 20minutes, so no excuses next time.

Tomorrow has to be a five minute project as I’m in the office, so I shall clean the outside of the kitchen windows as it’s been bugging me for weeks.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 19/04/2021 20:49

Oooh! I'm in too please.

Today I gutted the playroom AND already dropped the charity donations off.

Tomorrow I'm going to sort the under stairs cupboard. Boom.

RunningKatie · 19/04/2021 21:09

Done my 3 tasks for the day although it's 9pm and I've just done the last so cutting it fine!
Definitely feeling accomplished Smile

Squirrel26 · 19/04/2021 21:12

Think I have identified the Right Lightbulb and ordered some.

Not sure what I’m going to do tomorrow (I’ll be at work so it will be something equally as small as lightbulb sorting.)

Gottashiftit · 19/04/2021 21:31

Today I found the key for the front windows and opened them so we can now let in some lovely fresh air.

Tomorrow I will order a replacement drawer for the freezer. One is now properly broken in two.

DeathMetalMum · 19/04/2021 21:50

Done - tidying the basket of toiletries in the bathroom.

I haven't decided on my project for tomorrow yet. I will be sorting out my sock drawer on Wednesday after work though.

RoseHarper · 19/04/2021 22:23

Timing jobs is really handy - I used to put off emptying the dishwasher as I thought i didnt have time. I now know i can get it done in 5 minutes, works for lots of jobs...motivating as you know it'll be done in x amount of time but also can fit things in whilst waiting for other things like kettle to boil, washing machine to finish.

Thanks for starting this, after reading your first post and you mentioned lightbulb I thought of the bulb that's been out in the kitchen for weeks. I replaced it the day it stopped working then the next day it went out again, it's 1 of 4 so I ended up ignoring it. Your post made me get up and do it!

I also then built 2 ikea side tables I picked up from bargain corner this afternoon and left in the hall. I'd ordered them online so could just rock up and collect but was shocked to find there was no queue to get in anyway. I've also found a home for the old one that hasn't matched since we redecorated last year.

We are planning to sell soon so there's lots of little jobs that need doing and hopefully this will motivate me to get on with it! Thanks!

I work 3 long days so don't know how much I'll get done those days but will try and find something small and do bigger projects on my days off.

Love reading everyone feeling proud and enjoying their achievements, nice to have a happy, positive thread :)

Oh and @BlueLobelia if you want to read more about the cumulative effect of tiny changes it's covered quite extensively in a book called Atomic Habits by James Clear.

JackieTheFart · 20/04/2021 00:15

Great idea!

I’ll start tomorrow, and mine will be with the sole aim of decluttering. We’re hoping to move in the not too distant future, and if we can move ourselves rather than paying people to lob all our shite in a van I’d be pleased!

howsoonisnow85 · 20/04/2021 06:50

Morning! Today I am going to sort through a pile of letters & papers that have been accumulating for the last few weeks!

Tocktickclick · 20/04/2021 07:00

I shredded many, many, papers yesterday that were very tidy in a box. So in theory not a problem - yet some were from 2005 Blush

BlueLobelia · 20/04/2021 07:06

@AdoraBell

Done project- move underwear, jumpers and scarves to drawers.
Ooh! DH complains my extensive collection of scarves take up the hallway pegs. I will move them.

I'm quickly sorting a few things to drop at the food bank point on my way to work. I've been meaning to do it for ages! (Local food bank posts lists of what they need each week, which is helpful)

Thanks. :) I actually listened to a podcast a month or so back that mentioned this book and never got around to ordering it. I have just ordered it from trusty Amazon. :)

Today's project (now projects with the scarf plan).

  1. My beef tomato seedlings are struggling so I will repot them into slightly bigger pots and see if that helps. I had almost given up on them.
  1. Scarves - move all winter scarves to my wardrobe and only have the summer scarves out. That is a great one. DH moans I take up all the space, and he has a point. I know also I have a few coats under the scarves I never wear because I don't like them so I might charity shop those.

WFH today with only one client meeting outside so ought to manage it at some point.

Thank you everyone so much for joining the thread. I love reading all your projects! (Plus it never occurred to me to dye curtains.... mmmm...... looks at curtains.... )

I'm loving this thread. I've already achieved about 6 small jobs. My evenings project is to rehome the school books. I've been putting it off for ages.

Breathmiller · 20/04/2021 07:24

I love this thread.
I have had some major works done to my living room so my house is in a guddle. I'll have a think what I can do today.

I looked up the 1% improvement thing and that really works for me. I
What podcast did you listen to?

I'm feeling ready to get a bit more organised after the Easter holiday/building works/lockdown. Im looking forward to getting back into my routine so I can find little improvements to that routine.

I think today will be about doing admin for my business that I started yesterday, I'll get on with that. There is a new bill that needs sorted into direct debit. That can be mine today.

Also porridge every morning after the school walk. It fills me up and sets me up for the day.

partyatthepalace · 20/04/2021 07:48

OK today I took out the medical organiser I bought (3 months ago, I took it apart, washed it, and then dumped it in a wok on top of the microwave... Grin)- and took out the pills to put it in...

Then I realised I didn’t have time so I threw out some broken glass and old oven trays that had been hanging about. Will do the pill thingie tonight, a big moment.

sandgrown · 20/04/2021 07:48

Will try and clean the cobwebs from my kitchen window! Great thread

partyatthepalace · 20/04/2021 07:49

I also love this thread! ❤️

Even though my tasks are super dull compared to the tomato potting and curtaining going on.

RunningKatie · 20/04/2021 07:49

Today I am on a day off so doing my usual racing about the supermarket etc.
Project for today - plant bulbs. Probably a bit late, I have been putting it off for ages.
Also hopefully will list a few more bits for sale.

Breathmiller · 20/04/2021 07:55

Project getting up a little earlier to fit in my yoga and meditation practice before the school run.

17bluebirds · 20/04/2021 08:51

My two tiny jobs are done for the day.(remove an errant strip of masking tape and dispose of dead flowers)
I'm off to work now and wil think of a slightly bigger project for tomorrow.
