'One project a day' thread

BlueLobelia · 18/04/2021 12:51

... many years ago when i was first on MN I started (or maybe just actively participated in, cannot quite recall) a one (house) project a day. It made the most profound difference to my home. The project could be time consuming or not. It could take seconds, minutes or hours. I recall things like changing the lightbulb and lampshade in a hallway table lamp for example as a single day project. One day i also threw away holey and raggedy cushion covers and bought news ones. Little things, that really mattered.

If anyone is interested I wish to start another thread.

Today, as my one project a day, I cleared out my dehydrated and weed-ridden window boxes (2 of them). I put new compost in them and planted them with lobelia (obviously!); red geraniums and some dianthus. I am happy looking out (and in!) my front windows now. :)

I’m in: today I have potted/repotted a load of plants in the yard and watered them all.

I also need to move my exercise bike upstairs away from the dog who tries to attack my feet when am on it.

Tomorrow’s project will be to start sanding down my bed ready for re-painting. Will get everything ready this evening.

WorraLiberty · 18/04/2021 15:33

@Shuffalo

Definitely up for this! Today I need to pot up some Devil’s ivy I bought for our shower room.
Yes! It's like Japanese knotweed!

Only a little bit more to do and then it's done though

JustAddCoffee91 · 18/04/2021 15:43

This is such a good idea...
I'm currently sat looking at a big basket of washing to put away, I'm talking myself out of it I'm not going to lie 😂

spagbog5 · 18/04/2021 15:50

I'm in - this is exactly what I need. I've made dinner for tomorrow ( pasta bake ) and made a carrot cake for the week now off to finish cleaning the bathroom.
Tomorrow I will do ironing and clean skirting boards in our bedroom.

CarolinaWeeper · 18/04/2021 16:02

I'm in. Today I've swapped over colder weather/warmer weather wardrobes and have moved all my big jumpers/boots etc into the spare room.

coodawoodashooda · 18/04/2021 16:03

I love this idea. Especially that it can be a tiny task that tidies up your head. I'll have a think...

SakuraEdenSwan1 · 18/04/2021 16:05

Please may I join? Very overwhelmed at the moment with lots of things I know I need to do but just lack of energy to do anything!

Octodog · 18/04/2021 16:07

I have ridded the bedroom of unnecessary furniture and both pieces are being collected soon.

Measured for storage solutions for the cupboards and drawers.

Next to tackle the bedside drawer of doom.

HelloMissus · 18/04/2021 16:13

Ooh this idea is great.
Today I’m going to put away all the sports kits that I dried yesterday rather than leave them on a spare bed.

Kljnmw3459 · 18/04/2021 16:15

one project a day is a great idea. I often think of doing this but never get started because I think if I start something then I need to do everything else as well.....

Today's project: practise self-tanning with a wash-off tanner...... I did well for a first-timer!

Kljnmw3459 · 18/04/2021 16:16

it's not a house project though so I also cleaned all the kitchen splashbacks yesterday which atones for my sins for today

17bluebirds · 18/04/2021 16:20

I'm in.
I've done lots today, but my last job for the day is to sort all the clean washing and put it away before the cat finds it and sleeps on it, meaning it all needs to be re-washed.

Tomorrow is buy a lunch box for ds who is back at school on Tuesday

BlueLobelia · 18/04/2021 16:21

I think it all counts!

I am about to go sweep my path. My re-potting of the window boxes has made a mess. Usually I would not bother.

Great thread.

I have done mine for today: tackled the “dumping ground” area of random outgrown stuff beneath our bay window. Sorted brutally and ended up taking most of it to the recycling. So much rediscovered space!

MutteringDarkly · 18/04/2021 16:28

Love this idea! I've measured and cut the lengths of wallpaper for my bedroom. Working up to pasting them up another day!

Divineswirls · 18/04/2021 16:39

This thread is working very well for me already. It takes me ages to get around to doing things

I hoovered the landing then moved on to the kitchen and deep cleaned the work top and everything on it. Like washing down the bread bin, toaster, coffee machine, bin that kind of thing.

I feel very satisfied, although I'm sure most people do that far more often than me. In fact I know they do as I was reading the how to clean my kitchen thread which made me realise I fall way short

wheresmymojo · 18/04/2021 16:47

I'd like to join...I get to the point of having a big list of things and feeling overwhelmed so doing none of them!

Today I actually did quite a big project and had a Marie Kondo style clear out of my clothes to move towards a more capsule wardrobe.

Huge stack of clothes now to eBay/charity which is heaped as tall as the bed!

I'm having a break and then will go and move the heap to the spare bedroom as dealing with it is a whole other project!

Tomorrow's project will be using our Vax to clean some stains off the bedroom carpet and lounge rug from our cats having upset stomachs and vomiting everywhere last week Envy

sittingonacornflake · 18/04/2021 16:58

Oooh please can I join!?

Today I tackled the garden (there is SO much to do in the garden it's actually really overwhelming) so weeded some steps and path and also weeded the Astro turf and 1.5 beds. Got little one to sprinkle wild flower seeds in the bed we completely weeded.

Tomorrow I would like to go and buy 6 bags of bark.

Cushionsnotpillows · 18/04/2021 17:16

Love this idea. I can be an all or nothing person so when it comes to house stuff it often ends up being nothing as it's overwhelming.
I'm in! Getting DC ready for back to school tomorrow is today's task rather than leaving the finding of gym kit / school card until 8am tomorrow morning Grin

DeathMetalMum · 18/04/2021 17:17

Can I join, I think I need a bit of motivation deciding on one job will be good as try to do too much and then feel like I have got nowhere.

My job today was sorting out both dd's t-shirts 8 & 10 so I needed them to join in. Job done and clothes bagged up (with no where to go).

Tomorrow I am working most of the day, however I want to sort out the basket of toiletries in the bathroom. I half started that today so I will make sure I finish it tomorrow!

Allthefilmsarecrap · 18/04/2021 17:19

Ohhh great thread!

Today I purchased plants for my hanging planters but not sure that counts?
Also have a mirror and picture I might try and persuade DH to hang but I bought them so I’ll be claiming the project as my own!

CarmelBeach · 18/04/2021 17:21

This is a great idea. I'm going to set the timer and tidy the house. If i'm not back by 6 telling you it's improved, please shout at me!

BlueLobelia · 18/04/2021 17:22

Definitely counts. :)

I am amazed at how nice my window boxes look. The geraniums and lobelai are not yet flowering but the dianthus are. It feels so satisfying and took me minutes. :)

I don't work Mondays and think I shall buy some plants that will suit a really difficult spot in the garden. It's dry baked clay. I have googled and think hydrangeas may work. (ideas very welcome).

I really ought to iron the DCs school shirts but am watching Harry Potter Deathy Hallows 1 instead.

Very small one for me - refill and clean the liquid soap dispensers.

happinessischocolate · 18/04/2021 17:39

Thanks for this OP I've just sorted all the laundry that was on the dining room table and filed all the paperwork that was under the laundry. I then even cleaned the window sill, and the sideboard 😀 amazing how doing one job makes you want to do a bit more.
