'One project a day' thread

... many years ago when i was first on MN I started (or maybe just actively participated in, cannot quite recall) a one (house) project a day. It made the most profound difference to my home. The project could be time consuming or not. It could take seconds, minutes or hours. I recall things like changing the lightbulb and lampshade in a hallway table lamp for example as a single day project. One day i also threw away holey and raggedy cushion covers and bought news ones. Little things, that really mattered.

If anyone is interested I wish to start another thread.

Today, as my one project a day, I cleared out my dehydrated and weed-ridden window boxes (2 of them). I put new compost in them and planted them with lobelia (obviously!); red geraniums and some dianthus. I am happy looking out (and in!) my front windows now. :)

I’m in. Today I have changed the kids beds. I’m also going to make a list of the jobs I could do over the next few weeks as that will help me feel like more progress will be made!

HugeAckmansWife · 18/04/2021 17:51

I hemmed my DS's school trousers properly, with a sewing machine. That's me done for today. Great thread though.

CarmelBeach · 18/04/2021 17:55

Thanks OP

We've cleared the surfaces before dinner and tidied away a few clothes.

Lostthetastefordahlias · 18/04/2021 18:11

Great idea.
I am going to sort out the random bits of toys/ games baskets this evening.

wheresmymojo · 18/04/2021 18:28

My other mini project for today is inspired by another thread on self-care.

I'm going to get a box of self-care stuff that can live next to the sofa (tucked away) so that when I'm watching the TV with DH every night I can take my make up off, moisturise and use some of the many serums I've bought and not used.

Plus things like face masks and stuff for doing my nails.

That way I can do my evening skincare routine plus extra self-care treats while watching a programme with him from 9-10pm!

AreyouthereGoditsme · 18/04/2021 18:33

Fantastic thread, thank you! I'm a little overwhelmed too.
Today I will put the washing away and clear up the paint pots I've abandoned.

Allthefilmsarecrap · 18/04/2021 18:39

@BlueLobelia you’re so right! A few plants in a tub just lift a garden so much! My heart always sings when I come home and see my flowers in the summer Grin

WorraLiberty · 18/04/2021 18:42

I did it!!! I finished clearing the ivy. Took me nearly 5 hours on and off but it's all done now.

I've also become best friends with the electric saw that I'd been a little too nervous to use Grin

Now all I need to do is work out what to do with the humongous piled of cut ivy in the middle of the lawn but that dilemma can wait til tomorrow Grin

Blackjackontherocks · 18/04/2021 18:45

I have cleared a section of the garden of weeds and toys and ordered garden furniture to go there so we can have breakfast in the garden over Summer.

Because I was on a roll also moved some crocosmia to a better spot in the beds. This has been on my to do list since we moved to this house 5 years ago Shock

Interesting how so many of us have chosen to tackle a garden job! Must be the lovely weather.

devastating · 18/04/2021 18:46

I love this idea.

Today I have painted the front door. Also done other stuff but maybe more routine so doesn’t count?

AdoraBell · 18/04/2021 18:48

I did some weeding in the garden, does that count?

I seriously need to sort my wardrobe. Tomorrow I would plan to move jumpers and underwear/socks to the new drawers. It’s all half and half and I can’t remember if I have run out of clean knickers or if there’s 5 pairs in the other drawers 🤦‍♀️

Miscarriage39 · 18/04/2021 18:52

Oh, I so need this thread. Today, I have lifted the slate from under the honeysuckle and replaced it with bark. I also washed all the slate and started two acting it into flowerpots, where it won’t get so clogged up with plant debris.

Tomorrow, I will sort all the school uniform, throw away the holey socks, label what needs labelling and order new socks.

BlueLobelia · 18/04/2021 18:56

Everything counts!

I like the idea of a self care basket next to the sofa. I am off to put that together.. hand moisturiser, a nail file and nail polish shall feature. :)

This is a great idea. I'm joining in.

Today I have planted some vegetables. I've got some pepper plants, an aubergine, a butternut squash and some courgettes (I don't think one of them will survive my clumsy planting attempts though)

rosegoldwatcher · 18/04/2021 19:23

Brilliant idea for a thread OP.

I have a list, a mile long, of sewing and painting projects in my head and often 'get stuck' as I can't make up my mind which to do first. The answer, I suppose, is to do the one that captures your imagination.

So today I unearthed a pair of curtain panels, cut a decade ago but never used (as they were an uninspiring pink-cream) and machine dyed them - a quarter strength. What emerged were panels in a spring-like pale yellow which I will most definitely use.

Have ordered another dye pod to do the same to the other 2 panels.

tutorwho · 18/04/2021 19:32

A great idea!

Today I tried on clothing that I had purchased and washed the items that fit. I got the other items in a bag ready to return tomorrow.

Bloodybridget · 18/04/2021 19:36

What a brilliant idea! My house projects might be a bit limited by what I can manage to buy atm . . Although as I have had my second vaccination I will be less cautious soon . Plenty of scope for tweaks and improvements at Bridget Towers!

Camomila · 18/04/2021 19:36

Brilliant idea - we are starting to feel really cramped in our flat. Decluttering is probably quicker and easier than moving!

I have a days AL tomorrow so will start then. I have lots of clean washing to put away (least favourite job!)

highlandcoo · 18/04/2021 20:16

What a great thread! Thanks OP.

I'm like a PP who tries to do too much, gets overwhelmed and then doesn't do anything. So one task a day sounds very doable.

I don't think basic cleaning and laundry count though do they? For example, I change my bed every Monday and it's not a task I dislike, so for me I wouldn't count that. Whereas if I tackled a horrible little pile of paperwork I've been avoiding, that would be a real achievement.

And I also have two shelves of assorted toiletries from when we had a new bathroom fitted before Christmas Blush and three nice new baskets to put them in when I get round to sorting them out so this would prod me into getting on with it!

Insidelaurashead · 18/04/2021 20:37

I'm in. Today I cleaned and rearranged the fridge. Tomorrow I'll either do the freezer or the TV cabinet. Both of these being done will vastly improve my life

Wildernesstips · 18/04/2021 21:52

@BlueLobelia roses do well in clay soil. I also have a hydrangea in mine - it’s faring middling (neither growing vigorously or dying).

My task for tomorrow is to replace a belt buckle.

Makemedoit · 18/04/2021 21:56

Brilliant thread idea. Have done my ironing and washed my towels.

Tomorrow I am going to make up the bed in the spare room!

Going to start a list of things to do each day.

brokengate · 18/04/2021 21:58

Brilliant thread.

I'm drowning in jobs with a lambing husband and two under two.

Today I spread six bags of bark that have been sitting there since Autumn. Such a difference and did not take anywhere as long as I imagined.

LeonoraFlorence · 18/04/2021 21:59

I like this idea. I have been hoping to change our hall a bit so I’ve been buying bits and pieces but haven’t actually got round to putting it all together. I will focus on that.
Today I bought a new light pendant for the play room, something I’ve been meaning to do for ages. Now to get DH to put it up.

2020nymph · 18/04/2021 22:11

Great ideas for a thread @BlueLobelia

I'm feeling overwhelmed with all the jobs that need doing.

Today I have cleared out the pantry.
