'One project a day' thread

BlueLobelia · 18/04/2021 12:51

... many years ago when i was first on MN I started (or maybe just actively participated in, cannot quite recall) a one (house) project a day. It made the most profound difference to my home. The project could be time consuming or not. It could take seconds, minutes or hours. I recall things like changing the lightbulb and lampshade in a hallway table lamp for example as a single day project. One day i also threw away holey and raggedy cushion covers and bought news ones. Little things, that really mattered.

If anyone is interested I wish to start another thread.

Today, as my one project a day, I cleared out my dehydrated and weed-ridden window boxes (2 of them). I put new compost in them and planted them with lobelia (obviously!); red geraniums and some dianthus. I am happy looking out (and in!) my front windows now. :)

I agree that some days just making sure everyone is fed is enough.

I've had a couple of days of proper cleaning and feel like I'm back on top of things. I need to go back to work in the autumn so I'm looking at jobs each day and have a couple of things to apply for. DS1 will be heading to uni so things will be changing/shifting a bit and my thinking is that I need to have knocked the whole house into shape by the end of the summer holidays so that it takes the least amount of time and effort to keep up together once I'm back at work and DH is thankfully back to travelling for work again. Our youngest is 13 so we no longer have the toys etc that come with small children, but with five of us here so much the house gets untidy quickly and I feel like I'm always nagging someone to do something. But, we're pretty much there I think in terms of how much 'stuff' we have, and I'm training the kids to do more to help out and be responsible for tidying up after themselves.

Today's one job is a pile of paperwork I need to go through, but I can do that after dinner.

I sent an important email this evening.
Have helped DS to write his CV. He is meh about A levels and I think he is planning on dropping out. He has a meeting with his careers advisor tomorrow morning so hopefully this could be productive for him.

BeautifulandWilfulandDead · 18/05/2021 20:54

Built DDs new bed on Sunday, put all of her stuff back on Monday and cleared a load of building junk in the front yard today. ✅

cheeseychovolate · 18/05/2021 21:00

Been to work for a couple of hours. Took mother in law for her first haircut since the first lockdown, so well over a year, she looks so much better for it 😀

Catname · 18/05/2021 21:59

I fell off the wagon of reporting what I did last week but today I have had a concerted effort to clear my emails by unsubscribing to many newsletters and deleting things. I got the numbers down from nearly 8000 unread (Blush) to 2994. There were probably many more opened ones deleted too as I worked methodically unsubscribing and searching for everything from that sender.

Hopefully by not receiving so many new emails in the future, I might be able to keep on top of them rather than just scanning for important things.

We had a surprise visit from pil this evening which derailed my plans to continue blitzing. Did get the windowsills cleaned and made some progress on tidying DS1s room.

mamakoukla · 19/05/2021 02:14

Did the general house clean today and am happy that the kitchen clutter spot has been reined back this whole week. I paid a bill… and just remembered I need to renew my library books….. will go do now. Busy day, but kept things ticking so achieved a bit

DownUdderer · 19/05/2021 04:27

I've tackled half the drawer. That's better than nothing, so I'm pleased. Tomorrow I might get chance to do the other half.

BlueLobelia · 19/05/2021 05:51

Morning all- later today i will start Thread 2. :)

Last night I did a proper tidy of the kitchen before bed. That was enough.

@Devlesko Thanks

My plans have been derailed the last couple of days so I haven’t done my bedroom and bathroom clean up yet. Going to start it now....

Fnib · 19/05/2021 12:07

I have cleaned out the toaster, and behind the microwave.
Thank you @BlueLobelia will you put a link up here please or I'll never find it! Flowers

AdoraBell · 19/05/2021 13:12

I cleaned behind the bedside cabinets yesterday, vacuumed and wiped the skirting boards. Not been doing much recently but yesterday I planted out some veg plants, leeks, lettuce and cucumber.

I would think so Smile
Exciting!! 😂

SydneyCarton · 19/05/2021 14:30

For my mini chunk of bathroom cleaning I have done the windowsills, and for my project I've cleaned the three step-stools we have in there for the children, which were looking a bit grimy, plus the potty, which is usually dusty as DS only uses it once in a blue moon Hmm

MrsLCSofLichfield · 19/05/2021 15:18

This is a great thread, OP - hope you will post another one and keep it going!

Iceisnice · 19/05/2021 16:35

Yesterday was unproductive because eldest dd was home with stomach bug. Managed to roast a chicken Grin, booked my covid jabs because I am in the relevant age group now (yay!) and also spoke to my db who I haven't chatted to in weeks.
Today was a lot better and have managed a trip to the tip and clothing bank, and recycled our packaging for our local school. Got to go food shopping tonight and drop off the food for the food bank I sorted from our pantry. Have also started researching decor ideas.

Devlesko · 19/05/2021 18:21

Yes, I'd be up for another thread, only thing keeping me sane atm.
What's good is you can come on anytime, it's not timed to a certain period.
That's very helpful when you just want to say you've done something, it helps with motivation. Thanks

Not done much today, but got up to a lovely kitchen as everything got put away last night.

I've prepped and cooked tea, pulled a few weeds up, sorted a small drawer, and put the Savers delivery away.
I've cut my nails, still have washing up after tea, shower, and a light tidy in our bedroom.

Trying to go to bed early, think i'll just have to lie there until I drop off. Grin Usually 2/3am, aiming for 10.30/11.00.
Well, I can live in hope.

Thank you. I'm finding this really helpful.

Today I cleared out and tidied a kitchen press. Now it's so much easier to see what is there. Did other bits, but that was the main thing.

2020nymph · 19/05/2021 23:01

So pleased there is a second thread!

I woke up earlier then my sons which is rare. Managed to get myself ready for the day without interruptions and clean the kitchen cupboard doors and the fridge and dishwasher doors. I also sorted out the shelves in DS1 room, and cleared most of on top of the wardrobe.

Placemarking before this brilliant thread fills up. Only on page 6 but so inspired...some excellent ideas and tips. Yesterday, I read the state of your home reflective ts the state of your mind - that explains a lot! Have a 11.30am slot at the tip so off to fill the car. Cheers all and good luck x

Fnib · 20/05/2021 12:22

There's a part 2 @CarolNoE scroll up for it Smile

yeah, I found it and placemarked that one as well lol. I am living vicariously through everyone else's efforts...anything to delay me starting - the usual Mumsnet MO

Several nothing days but today I tackled the bookshelf of doom and cleared away a load of home learning stuff and about 20 half used babyish colouring books. The DCs won't be happy - I found their handwriting books.
