'One project a day' thread

... many years ago when i was first on MN I started (or maybe just actively participated in, cannot quite recall) a one (house) project a day. It made the most profound difference to my home. The project could be time consuming or not. It could take seconds, minutes or hours. I recall things like changing the lightbulb and lampshade in a hallway table lamp for example as a single day project. One day i also threw away holey and raggedy cushion covers and bought news ones. Little things, that really mattered.

If anyone is interested I wish to start another thread.

Today, as my one project a day, I cleared out my dehydrated and weed-ridden window boxes (2 of them). I put new compost in them and planted them with lobelia (obviously!); red geraniums and some dianthus. I am happy looking out (and in!) my front windows now. :)

Spent a while searching on-line for bath mats without latex as the ones I washed have given up the ghost and decided to flake off in the drum so spent a few minutes getting all the tiny pieces out.

Silkiecats · 13/05/2021 22:05

I set up new computer and researched sixth forms.

2020nymph · 13/05/2021 22:08

Well done everyone.

I have succumbed to DS2s lurgy and all I've managed to do is order a present.

Sparklynewname · 13/05/2021 22:48

@Divineswirls I have the noodly type bath mats- I got one from Next (£10) and another from Asda (£6). The Next one is used by our back door in front of the dog flap and has been down for over a year. I Chuck it in the wash every week or so and it comes out lovely- it’s nice and absorbent and is soft enough that the dog sits on it during the day sometimes. Can’t comment on the Asda one, it’s been down about 2 months and is holding up ok but doesn’t get anything like the amount of abuse that the Next one has.
Neither have a latex backing but they don’t slide around. HTHs 🙂

Divineswirls · 14/05/2021 00:27

I know exactly what you mean @Sparklynewname

I've also got a lovely noodley one too which is cotton and weaved underneath to be non slip without the need for latex or anything just the weave. I've had it for ages and it washes brilliantly and I can't find one like it anywhere. I've looked at Next and Asda as per your recommendation but alas no noodley ones. Looked at JL and M&S too.

Divineswirls · 14/05/2021 00:34

Actually it's more of a loop than a noodle

DownUdderer · 14/05/2021 01:18

I've mopped this morning. Next some garden jobs.

BlueLobelia · 14/05/2021 15:07

Today';s project is more personal than a home and heart one - I spent the bulk of the day today at a school event. And came away a bit depressed at how lovely and lithe all the other mothers are!

So i am home now and planning a weightloss strategy. My reward will be (once i have lost 3 stone) is to start riding again. I am way too heavy for horses - last time I rode they gave me a (delightful) Friesan ffs and I am 2 stone heavier than that now! Confused Grin

Yet more plug plant planting here, and putting net over the newly planted container that the cat had been using as a litter trayEnvy

Divineswirls · 14/05/2021 18:29

I saw that one in Next @Sparklynewname but it's polyester and cotton so I'm a bit hesitant. But I do like it a lot and it doesn't have the dreaded latex backing. Plus I think 100% cotton is probably always going to be a nightmare to wash ie never spins properly due to its wet weight.

Fnib · 14/05/2021 20:20

@BlueLobelia always good to have a reason to lose weight I think. And once you can ride that will help your fitness too!
I hadn't done anything beyond basic tasks today but then I thought of this thread. The window cleaner came today so I have just cleaned the inside of upstairs windows. Took just a moment but it makes a difference Smile

Iceisnice · 14/05/2021 22:23

You have all been doing so well! I fell off the wagon due to extreme sleep deprivation but last night I managed to get 5 hours! And that includes a block of 3 hours....feel like a new woman! Baby is now 8 weeks and we are settling in to the routine so hopefully I can continue the daily projects. Today's was to cover some baby wipe boxes with brown parcel paper so that they look a little nicer under the sink once I have decluttered and organised under there tomorrow night.
@BlueLobelia I am aiming to lose 3 stone too to bring me back to my pre-pregnancy weight from before I had my first child (now on baby no3). I have downloaded the nhs weight loss app and hopefully this will help, did this while drinking a truly divine hot chocolate but hoping to achieve the weight loss by maintaining everything in moderation!

We have a full on weekend so spent today doing the housework/ laundry that we would normally do as a family over the weekend. Did have helper DS2. We picked up prescriptions, sorted out another card and present and the new curtains are finally up. Make a massive difference.

On a personal level, as have some many others, I have completely neglected myself this past year juggling work, home learning and childcare. I look at myself and I'm so ashamed how much I have let myself go. I am a mess and I didn't even see it happening.

LlamaGiles · 14/05/2021 23:28

@BlueLobelia good luck! I've been using nutricheck which I've found effective although I struggle to use it consistently.

Today I had the money laundering check for our house purchase, put a couple more things on Olio and began the preparation of our spare room for the estate agent photos next week - clearing out and reorganising.

DownUdderer · 15/05/2021 03:38

I did my gardening yesterday afternoon. I cleared a neglected area.

Today I've sewn some hems on my curtain.

Fnib · 15/05/2021 06:56

It's clean fridge out ahead of food shop day today. I'm working on a weekly habit of making soup from any leftover veg and other bits.
I just cleaned out a drawer in dining room. It's amazing what useless old tat ends up in there. And who needs 8 rolls of sellotape?!

Devlesko · 15/05/2021 11:53

Today I got up. Grin

Have tidied kitchen, put a load of washing on, doing food order, then little shop in town.
Then the rest of the day housework blitz whilst dh sits, watches, and chats to me.
He's more mobile now and is looking after himself as much as he can, but nowhere near pushing a hoover round yet.

CharityDingle · 15/05/2021 12:12

Today's project, finish the sorting of stuff for recycling. It's so satisfying seeing the recycling bin filling up.

mamakoukla · 15/05/2021 13:06

Been away from the thread for a few days. Reading through -it’s lovely, like the gentle hum of a bee hive.

On Thursday the knee of my beloved jeans ripped through, from much loved use. Yesterday I applied an iron on patch from the underside so it’s more of a closed rip. The reality is I have been telling myself for a year now that I need to lose the 10 kg I have been holding onto. Part of my one day project today is to think through how I can best approach this. I know how it works theoretically 😁

Divineswirls · 15/05/2021 13:22

Yesterdays project was daring to venture into DD's room and clearing up a lot of stuff from the floor, so many oval cotton pads Angry and piling up her clothes into a giant pile for her to sort out. Which to be fair she diligently did and has carried on with further sorting of room.

I bunged one load into the wash from her floordrobe.

Today's mini project was to organise and fill new storage baskets with cleaning products and another for laundry products.

Also need to tidy and hoover my own room.

TenCornMaidens · 15/05/2021 13:31

I also got up! Grin

Made bacon butties for everyone. Took dd to the garden centre to get plants for her tortoise's outdoor enclosure (if it ever gets warm enough for her to stay outdoors for any length of time) and managed to pick up a few gifts.

Second jab later.

Fnib · 15/05/2021 17:10

I have made a big vat of vegetable soup so nothing has been wasted, and a chicken stew that means dinner is covered on my longer work days. Dining room window has been cleaned. I've had a lovely afternoon listening to an audio book and looking at the garden through my newly cleaned window. Happy days Smile

LlamaGiles · 15/05/2021 20:29

I mowed the back lawn and started trimming hedges, made a trip to the tip to dump some rubbish and decluttered the bathroom (not a big job, it's tiny).
