'One project a day' thread

... many years ago when i was first on MN I started (or maybe just actively participated in, cannot quite recall) a one (house) project a day. It made the most profound difference to my home. The project could be time consuming or not. It could take seconds, minutes or hours. I recall things like changing the lightbulb and lampshade in a hallway table lamp for example as a single day project. One day i also threw away holey and raggedy cushion covers and bought news ones. Little things, that really mattered.

If anyone is interested I wish to start another thread.

Today, as my one project a day, I cleared out my dehydrated and weed-ridden window boxes (2 of them). I put new compost in them and planted them with lobelia (obviously!); red geraniums and some dianthus. I am happy looking out (and in!) my front windows now. :)

@fnib we are looking at a kitchen refurb and we are probably going to go with ikea for units because they seemed the best value. There is a website that sells handles that are compatible with the ikea units so you can change them and they will make the units look different/more expensive. But before we can get to that exciting project we need to knock down the conservatory that houses our kitchen (previous owners bright idea....!) Rebuild as a proper extension and then we can plan our kitchen. That won't be for a few years yet though!

Devlesko · 16/05/2021 14:22
@Devlesko, have you looked at any Ted talks on overcoming procrastination? There are lots on YouTube.
I saw this very late last night and thought I won't put it off.
Ended up going to bed at 2am. Grin Very interesting how a change in mindset can get you started.
I have mowed the lawn though, tidied the kitchen, a load of washing on line.
About to hoover throughout, cook the tea and I'm done.
Tonight my usual spiritual reflection and prep for next week, and a bit of ancestry.

A rewarding garden Sunday! Dodged the rain to plant out sweetpeas, trimmed back the crazy euphorbia, planted the kids’ sunflower seeds in a pot, swept up a ton of manky old leaves.

I forget how much I love gardening, but I suspect my back will remind me tomorrow.

I hope your back is fine!

I am doing a serious garden day tomorrow. I have decided (after much thinking) that i am mowing circa 70% of the lawn and giving the rest over to being unmown. I have some butterfly friendly seeds and will sow them.

Another yes please for another thread! It’s been inspiring and good company. Thank you BlueLobelia for starting this beauty!

Today I did a bit of plants into pots, including the geranium cuttings which have a healthy amount of roots. Pleased to report that the sweet peas I planted, spurred on by this thread, are poking through the soil! Thank you for giving me the enthusiasm to do that. Looking forward to several weeks when there might be flowers. Love watching the daily progress

BlueLobelia · 16/05/2021 19:44

Oh, an update... My beef tomatoes that were repotted are doing very well. They are not ready to be planted out, but they are now relatively sturdy and about 15 cm high.

I also had a pot of seeds that i had given up for dead. They have started poking through! Problem is that the label I had written the name of whatever they were on has been in the damp compost for so long the sharpie has worn off so i am not at all sure what they are. They may be cucumbers......

Update.
I have to start all over on a job I've done many many hours on over the last 2 months. Not my fault in the slightest.
I'm totally gutted about all the jobs that won't get done because of this. I could cry ☹️

Fnib · 16/05/2021 20:00

I'm inspired to do a bit more with my garden thanks to you lovely lot! Tomorrow is busy so it'll be 10 mins max, but I intend to get out there come rain or shine! Is it too late to plant sweet peas? I have an unused trellis.

Fnib · 16/05/2021 20:01

Oh shiny I'm sorry to hear this 😔

Fnib · 16/05/2021 20:03

Would you be able to do a 2 min job each day? You'll still be making a dent in things then Flowers

drspouse · 16/05/2021 20:03

More planting out and the landing tidied, and a very delayed eBay parcel sent.

2020nymph · 16/05/2021 20:17

I've cleared out the fridge, bagged up the old curtains and cleared one of the many piles of paperwork dotted around the house.

Sparklynewname · 16/05/2021 20:30

Sorry to hear you have to redo a job @ShinyHatStand 😩

PandaLady · 16/05/2021 21:24

Can I join please? I have been flopping about in despair at my domestic non-achievement and it's got to stop!

Today I arranged for a charity shop to pick up an ugly bookcase and drop off another much nicer one for our first floor landing.

Tomorrow I will oversee said swap and take an old sofa to the tip.

carlywurly · 16/05/2021 21:33

I'm late to this thread but I've been doing just this since the start of the year along with getting rid of a thing a day and omg the difference now. The house is transformed. I literally cross off one house related job a day and the cumulative effect is really starting to show.

Today was an early morning trip to the tip - nothing better than wanging it all into the containers and driving off with an empty car.

I feel like I've been clearing out forever, we always have a charity bag on the go.

Hooray for the beef tomatoes!

I’ve dried four loads of laundry and washed three, folded all four and put three loads away. I’ll put mine/DP’s clothes away in this last One but DS’ will have to wait till tomorrow now as he’s asleep.

Regarding DS’ healthier eating, we had salmon, cubed potatoes and peas for dinner and he ate all of it and then had homemade rice pudding for tea, which only had two tablespoons of dark brown sugar in for what must be 8 portions. I’ve made strawberry yoghurt bark in the hope that he’ll eat it for breakfast and peanut butter bliss balls for after school snacks!

DifficultBloodyWoman · 17/05/2021 04:44

Today, I want to get my bathroom cleaned up. Except I’ve just realised that will involve a trip to Aldi for cleaning products.

Ok, plan b. Today, I will declutter my bedroom and wardrobe. The area next to my side of the bed has become a bit of dumping zone for all sorts of things and I need to do a cull for the charity shop.

mathanxiety · 17/05/2021 06:01

Cooked enough dinners to last a week.
Did laundry.
Managed to get DD3's duvet back into its cover.
Filled up car.
Mailed taxes for DS who had forgotten to do it (must be postmarked by Monday here).
Did shopping, involving going to three supermarkets.

Oh that menu and snacks sound truly lovely!

So sorry you have to re-do a project Shiny Thanks

gardening here today and I need to book a slot at the tip. We have half our old shower sitting in the back yard that needs to be dumped.

I have one curtain hung! One more to go!

Tomorrow I want to buy a ladder. Getting it home will be the interesting part! Next door has loads of crazy bushed growing over onto our roof and I need to trim them back.

AlohaMolly · 17/05/2021 07:57

Today I’ve woken up feeling like rubbiiiiish Sad I have a real bad habit of getting dehydrated, and I remember now that yesterday I only had a latte to drink at about 10am, so it’s no wonder I feel like death. It quickly develops into vomiting bile for me, so I’m trying to rectify the situation by throwing tea down me!!

Today I’ve got to take the pre Christmas purge to the charity shops, pick up some food from the Olio app and then give myself a break I think while I finish a job application.

Fnib · 17/05/2021 08:13

All positive stuff! I only look at this thread in the mornings now. Much more life affirming than AIBU Smile
I've noticed that the jobs I have put off over the years have been ones that are difficult to arrange or get at in some way. After lots of tiny decluttering kind of adjustments over the last few months, hard jobs like hanging curtains, and small ones like where to keep shoes, suddenly feel much easier. I've definitely revved up the daily extra since this thread though!

Fnib · 17/05/2021 08:14

Good luck with jobs Molly

I bought a couple of large curver plastic baskets to put all the cluttered crap I also had next to my bed including the clothes I hang on the chair and it immediately looked neater once I'd done that plus one box goes nicely under the chair.

I'm currently staring at my very cluttered dining room table which now I'm on here I'm convincing myself I will endeavour to sort out today

Divineswirls · 17/05/2021 11:17

These are the bath mats I've gone for. Completely different to what I'd planned and DD now wants them as bedroom rugs so I may well buy the one @Sparklynewname has after all.
