'One project a day' thread

... many years ago when i was first on MN I started (or maybe just actively participated in, cannot quite recall) a one (house) project a day. It made the most profound difference to my home. The project could be time consuming or not. It could take seconds, minutes or hours. I recall things like changing the lightbulb and lampshade in a hallway table lamp for example as a single day project. One day i also threw away holey and raggedy cushion covers and bought news ones. Little things, that really mattered.

If anyone is interested I wish to start another thread.

Today, as my one project a day, I cleared out my dehydrated and weed-ridden window boxes (2 of them). I put new compost in them and planted them with lobelia (obviously!); red geraniums and some dianthus. I am happy looking out (and in!) my front windows now. :)

Managed to mark the set of essays I've been avoiding all bank holiday weekend today and sorted out some bills and banking.

Tomorrow is a pretty full day at work so probably won't achieve anything at home - will be dragging home another set of assessments to mark.

Most teachers seem to blitz everything at half term or holidays which I always mean to do but fail Blush I get the school work done I have to and get on top of laundry and very basic things like that but I love a bit of sitting around doing nothing I'm afraid.

Chunkymonkey123 · 04/05/2021 18:19

Today I attempted to drop at the charity shop but the ones I rung said they are full and to try again next week.
I did do a trip to IKEA where I got a kallax shelving unit and mirror for the hall, both items have been on my list for a while. I also bought two massive houseplants so now need to buy a big basket pot cover for them!

I need to get my photos sorted, I do a book each year but still haven’t finished 2019. At least the 2020 one should be quick 😂

RunningKatie · 04/05/2021 20:17

A photo book per year is on my long list Chunkymonkey
Today I've posted my letter to my penpal, sorted out a smart lightbulb and done the ironing for the dc and I. DH has to do his own, his choice as I iron fast and badly! Grin
I actually feel I'm getting things done that have been bugging me for ages, it's very satisfying.

PowerslidePanda · 04/05/2021 20:26

Did a bit more unpacking... Not whole boxes, but bits of several boxes. It's mostly decorative stuff and some of the contents can't be unpacked until we've put up more shelves and things. So I've taken out what I can and in theory I can combine what's left into fewer boxes, but I haven't actually done that yet!

17bluebirds · 04/05/2021 21:03

Nothing done here today. A 10 hour shift at work with a 30 min commute each way has meant I'm too knackered to do anything at home.

ShinyHatStand · 04/05/2021 21:30

I made a real effort today as last week I got nothing done on work days.

I cleared out both my large bottom drawer of random clothes that don't go anywhere else and my wardrobe.
Stashed my better fat clothes up in a top cupboard. And binned stuff that doesn't fit and is past it's best.
Both are looking much emptier so should be a lot easier to keep tidyish.
Still need to sort out the other stuff in the top cupboard some of which was too small last time I checked but might fit now.

Downside is I no longer own a swimming costume. Any recommendations for a cup-sized non-revealing swimsuit suitable for use on holiday with the kids? (30ff ish)

Tonight I’ve paid for my garden waste bin and then done my tax return early which is good it’s done but really upsetting as I’m going to have to overpay and then claim the money back.

Catname · 04/05/2021 22:02

Yesterday, I had a day off from thinking about things that I could do. I stared out the window at the rain and cursed that I couldn't do anything in the garden.

Today I've been at FIL's, which is now virtually empty, and did all the cleaning/dusting/hoovering. I also planted 2 plants.

2020nymph · 04/05/2021 22:11

Glad we're not the only ones with clutter magnet areas! Grin

Sparklynewname · 04/05/2021 22:16

DH replaced a bulb in the ceiling lights
My project was outside the home- got some paperwork handed in for a return to our meeting place for a hobby and went along to a Cub meeting on the beach
Hope to achieve more tomorrow and have put down to do an extra list on Saturday so will potentially be a long day on my feet.
Luckily no storm damage visible from last night despite the cherry tree looking like a metronome.

2020nymph · 04/05/2021 22:17

I've had a long day at work but did get cards for the three occasions this month.

Also, DH likes to clean the surfaces with one sponge which is identical to the one used for doing the dishes. He gets cross that I don't remember which one is which. So today I bought different colour sponges so we can tell the difference!

drspouse · 04/05/2021 23:18

Got my clothes down from the loft and put them in the wardrobe. Tomorrow I'll pop the winter ones up there along with some of the DCs. Also may need to contact the GP about some support for DH and I around DS behaviour, we were just offered a parenting course Hmm but we know what we should be doing, we are just too distressed to do it frankly.

Divineswirls · 05/05/2021 00:46

Oh god I've just remembered whilst reading this that I made chicken stock in the slow cooker and left it out to cool but havent put it in the fridge yet.

mathanxiety · 05/05/2021 06:30

Cold, rainy day here so no trip to the charity shop. I did add the slow cooker to the donation in the boot though. I haven't used it since I bought my Instant Pot.

I hoovered instead. The cat is doing her seasonal moult and it was time.

Tomorrow morning I'm heading out with the things that need to be posted plus three more letters.

frugalkitty · 05/05/2021 08:52

Two projects for me today...I'm going to drop off the bags at the charity shop and I'm going to sort my car insurance. I've done the comparison sites already this morning and found a much cheaper option with Aviva, so must now action the switch!

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 05/05/2021 09:14

I started a 10,000 steps a day fundraising challenge on 1st May, and that's been enough of a project for the past few days. This carries on to the end of May (and I'm hoping becomes a good habit I can maintain).

Today I'm also going to drop some more clothes DP has finally sorted out at the clothes bank up the road.

Divineswirls · 05/05/2021 09:20

I need to clear the hallway, weed the front garden, hoover and clear a pile of stuff in the corner of the living room at some point. Now I've written it I have to do it.

TenCornMaidens · 05/05/2021 14:57

I cleaned the grout and redid the sealant in the bathrooms today. Absolutely exhausted now! But glad I did it.

Fnib · 05/05/2021 14:59

I've cleaned a low, awkward-to-get-at window sill today. And I have wiped out my saucepan/baking tray/jug cupboard and I had everything out as I was batch cooking.
Feeling quite pleased with myself. Food is in cooking in oven, washing up is done, so I'm going to have a coffee and put my feet up Smile

LlamaGiles · 05/05/2021 16:47

I had a really poor weekend on this, it really is hard to do my basic cleaning tasks never mind an extra one job when I have my toddler around, absolutely exhausting! Felt a bit deflated but have tried to make up for it today and catch up. Have posted a couple of bits I've sold on eBay along with DSis's birthday card, wrapped DD's birthday presents and bought my goddaughter's birthday present and card too. Also bought some tights and sunhat and sunglasses for DD online. Put a few more bits up for sale on EBay too. Next up is library books...

Sparklynewname · 05/05/2021 18:53

DH is boxing in pipes in downstairs loo and I will clear up all his mess when he’s finished. That will be our projects for the day.

mamakoukla · 05/05/2021 19:25

Submitted our census form.... and off to declutter the kitchen counters.....again 😂

BlueLobelia · 05/05/2021 19:40

I have had a really annoying day. DH last night was re-hemming DS1's school trousers (he is the sewing person of the family) and he dropped a large needle and I somehow stood on it (the blunt eye end) and it went so far into my foot that we had to get it out with pliars. It hurts.

I am having some issues with work that kept me awake most of last night. (I recently dropped a day, but am being pressured to return to full time which i cannot handle right now for various reasons).

My project for today is to have a shower and take myself to bed in a goodly early time. I am halfway through Harry Potter the Prisoner of Azkaban with the Dcs so a chapter of that and a peppermint tea will see me right I think.

Actually, we got the door up too so tomorrow we will be fitting the door stoppers and hopefully the handles.

Chunkymonkey123 · 05/05/2021 21:22

@BlueLobelia that’s horrible!! 💐 I bet it hurts!! Hope it heals quickly for you x
