He died this morning

OP posts:
MummBraTheEverLeaking · 09/04/2021 12:36

Expected, although when I had the bbc news push notification I thought it was going to be that he was back in hospital.

Seeing as we're only just (and still) emerging out of lockdown I wonder what they'll do in terms of a funeral. He had, what they say, a good innings. Not everyone's cup of tea, but seemed to be a massive support to the Queen.

daisypond · 09/04/2021 12:36
**@emilyfrost I understand that but was just very surprised at the size and depth of these articles/programmes. I sort of expected them to come later in the day or tomorrow!
There will be lots more in-depth programmes and articles to come. I work in media and often do these, so they are immediately ready to go. Obituaries and programmes and articles about VIPs are re-edited and updated often.

TempsPerdu · 09/04/2021 12:36

Stunned but not surprised at the nasty comments. Could people really not just scroll on by and say nothing if all they were going to say was unpleasant? No need

Don’t think my own post was especially rude - I just said I was sad for the Queen but otherwise meh about his death. But I reserve the right to comment because I feel that increasingly there’s a climate of expected conformity and flag-waving compliance with stuff like this, and I think it’s important to highlight that there’s actually a breadth of opinion, and that not everyone feels this is a national tragedy, or that we should all be in mourning.

It’s the same as when Captain Tom died; I wasn’t especially sad then either.

And yes, I wondered how long it would be before the Meghan Markle comments kicked in - now that’s nasty.

BarbaraofSeville · 09/04/2021 12:36

All the papers have pre-written obituaries for major public figures. The BBC too

They'll have been writing obits and rehearsing news reports for the passing of the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh for decades.

I read that the BBC had annual rehearsals and trying on of sombre clothing by senior newsreaders so now I need to put the TV on to see it in action.
@Doomsdayiscoming
So it was a joke? On a thread about a man who has died? Classy.

Very sad news. Echoing what other posters have said, it's hard to imagine the pain of losing a partner after so many years of marriage.
I was satirising what I expected on this thread which is subtle digs at H and M. Which I can already see two (at least) cases of. I just chose to be outlandish about it to make a point.

jessstan2 · 09/04/2021 12:37

Oh bless!

He had a really good innings. The Queen will certainly miss him but will soldier on as usual; as will all his family and friends.

I hope Harry comes over for the funeral. They were all very close at one time, he was great friends with his many cousins as well as his brother and dad.

End of an era.

Please can MN delete these posts by Orangeblossomsinthesun ? Very, very distasteful and no need for them at all. Really not clever.

Badly done, @OrangeBlossomsinthesun

Andante57 · 09/04/2021 12:38

OrangeBlossom couldn’t you wait even a few days before making unpleasant remarks about a man that has just died?

lynsey91 · 09/04/2021 12:39

The news has made me very sad because it has made me think of my dad who died aged 94 in January (almost 95).

Doesn't matter how old someone is it is still sad when they die and usually pretty devastating for their family.

When he came out of hospital he looked so old and frail and I said to my DH "he is going home to die". Sadly I was right.

I feel so sorry for the Queen and their children

shipsandgiggles · 09/04/2021 12:39

Such upsetting news

HannibalHayes · 09/04/2021 12:39

Very sad for the Queen, but could Boris not have at least combed his hair before making a statement?

Doesn't look very respectful, and a dreadful impression for the country.

namechangedyetagain · 09/04/2021 12:39

This has made me feel quite sad actually. I think it's because they have always been there, about the same ages as my own GPs who themselves were married for 70 odd years. I feel for the Queen.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 09/04/2021 12:40

I'm no royalist but I am respectful to the public service that the Duke has given

This is my own position - but even as a committed republican I can recognise he was a man with a family who loved him

No cause to be surprised at the instant lengthy articles being published though; they'll have been written ages since

AbsolutelyPatsy · 09/04/2021 12:40

I hope the most recent The Crown was kind to him

PatchworkElmer · 09/04/2021 12:40

Very sad news, I feel for the Queen 😔

TSSDNCOP · 09/04/2021 12:40

I love the posters that love to post a negative. You waste your energy in the first post, and then pop gasket defending yourself in subsequent posts. Those of us that are interested don't give two tiny shits that you're not.

Now you can get on with hitting all your cues with accusing us of forelock tugging, cap doffing, bowing, curtseying, he's 99 for gods sake, blah blah

peak2021 · 09/04/2021 12:42

Thoughts for the Queen and the children and grandchildren who have been bereaved.

LazyDaisy22 · 09/04/2021 12:42

I’m not a great Royalist but am feeling quite tearful to hear the news. So very sad for the Queen, who has had a difficult time lately. And sad for his children - no matter how old you are, losing a parent is a terrible thing.

SmashedAvocado · 09/04/2021 12:42

How ridiculous. Do you think the RF are going to be reading comments on MN Irma. Everybody is entitled to their opinion even though it may not align with yours. Grow up!

ElizabethTudor · 09/04/2021 12:42

RIP Prince Philip.
He was obviously the Queen’s rock - such a long and supportive marriage. So I really hope she’ll be ok.

Rosiesmydog · 09/04/2021 12:42

RIP. I wonder if this will be time for her to hand over the reins to Charles?

I’d prefer it to be accurate. I can’t stand history being rewritten. Someone dying doesn’t change who they were in life.

daisypond · 09/04/2021 12:43

@Rosiesmydog

RIP. I wonder if this will be time for her to hand over the reins to Charles?
Well, no, of course that won’t happen.
Dentistlakes · 09/04/2021 12:43

Very sad news
