Lighthearted, give me your unpopular opinions.

I can start;

The musical Hamilton and Star Wars are over rated.

@thatsgotit

It's rude to ask guests to take their shoes off in your house. People don't always need a bath or shower every single day. Children do not always come first. Afternoon tea is overpriced and overrated... ...and, on a similar note, people are far too obsessed with food at social gatherings, to the point where it takes over from actually socialising. Line of Duty is boring. So were the Beatles. 'Bingeing' on entire TV series in one go is boring. Whatever happened to cliffhangers and building up anticipation for the next episode? Reaching five a day and 10,000 steps is hard. Oh, and fruit is not the food of the devil. Nor are jarred sauces.
I agree with most of this (except Line fo Duty being boring). However, pre-lockdown it was easy for me to get to 10k steps even with a sedentary job. If you don't drive everywhere and you're not forced to stay at home, it should be easy. 5 a day I find almost impossible :(

Foxy, my mum was fired from her job as soon as she got pregnant (in 1971) she was a teacher
Ah yes, that sort of "kinder society".
FoxyTheFox · 29/03/2021 20:32

Foxy, my mum was fired from her job as soon as she got pregnant (in 1971) she was a teacher

This was the case in some jobs as the employer thought a working mother would be unreliable but the idea of women staying at home while the husband is the breadwinner was only true for a very brief period during the mid-20th century and even then only for the middle and upper classes, outside of that period (and those classes) women worked, married or not.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 29/03/2021 20:33

Definitely agree with this, and would add that anyone who says “I just tell it like it is” is probably just being rude for the sake of it.

I agree - and then if you challenge them on their appalling rudeness that has left someone in tears , they say "It's just my way"

CHANGE YOUR FARKING WAY THEN, YOU TWAT!

They are also the ones who take offence most easily at other people's innocent comments.

OliverBabish · 29/03/2021 20:56

Coffee is terrible

The Beatles were just ok

Hawaiian pizza is the best pizza

Disney World Florida is one of the best holidays you can ever have if you have young kids

thatsgotit · 29/03/2021 20:58

Definitely agree with this, and would add that anyone who says “I just tell it like it is” is probably just being rude for the sake of it.

And also 'But it's TRUUUUE!' or 'I was only saying!' accompanied by a look of saucer-eyed innocence after saying something breathtakingly tactless/hurtful. A former friend of mine was a master at this. (Note I said former. Grin )

They are also the ones who take offence most easily at other people's innocent comments.

So true!

However, pre-lockdown it was easy for me to get to 10k steps even with a sedentary job.

How though? Not being arsey, genuinely curious... I virtually never manage it, although admittedly I have chronic fatigue which plays a part.

Online shopping is shit!

@Gwenhwyfar

""I have anxiety" is overused. The majority of those using it may be super stressed, but they won't have a diagnosed anxiety disorder. Throwing the term around willy-nilly makes it so much harder for those of us who do have diagnosed anxiety, to be taken seriously and not lumped in with those who are just a bit stressed out. It's the same as describing yourself as "a bit OCD" because you like your house clean."

This annoys me.
Plenty of people have conditions they haven't been diagnosed with. Some may have even been told by a doctor that they probably have something, but not received an official diagnosis.

I dont know how many times I can say the same thing.

The people you describe are NOT who annoy me.

The people who wang on about being "a bit OCD", that "everyone is a bit autistic" are similar to the type who use "anxiety" as a catch-all for being a bit stressed, usually to get out of certain things. Another poster who mentioned wearing masks - I have severe anxiety and mask wearing is horrendous but I still wear one*. I can think of 3 or 4 people I know personally who do not live with anxiety yet use it as their excuse for not wearing a mask. THAT type of person is my bugbear.

I experience this kind of person more often than I'd like.

*before I get jumped on for that: yes I know we all experience it differently, I am using that example to highlight my point and am not saying that if you are genuinely anxious about wearing a mask you should just push on through.

ViciousJackdaw · 29/03/2021 21:47

@Theunamedcat

David Bowie was great in labyrinth I honestly cannot imagine anyone else in that role
I couldn't imagine anyone else in those tights!
Neotraditional · 29/03/2021 21:56

@GreenHairThingy I get what you mean and agree completely. Lots of people use ‘anxiety’ these days when they really mean they are a bit stressed or don’t want to do something. A diagnosed anxiety disorder is not the same as being a bit afraid of speaking in a group, going to the dentist etc. They are normal reactions to situations we’d rather not be in.

I’ve probably worded this clumsily but I do think it’s a term used too freely and it minimises what actual sufferers go through.

ddl1 · 29/03/2021 22:01

Definitely agree with this, and would add that anyone who says “I just tell it like it is” is probably just being rude for the sake of it.

True; also if someone says 'I don't want to be rude, but...', it usually means that they do want to be rude. (As with 'I'm not racist, but...' and similar statements.)

The worst, as far as I'm concerned, is people who present their rudeness as For the Hearer's Good: 'tough love' as a pp said; 'I'm telling you this for your own good'; 'I would like to help you consider this'; 'I'm telling you this because I'm concerned'; etc. Be nasty to me if you must, but don't pretend that it's for my good!

Neotraditional · 29/03/2021 22:01

My unpopular opinions:

You cannot change sex - TWATW
The Beatles are massively overrated
Prawns are the food of the devil
Babies are boring and I never get ‘broody’ when I see/hold one.

GreenHairThingy · 29/03/2021 22:14

@Neotraditional yes! Thank you, you've said what I have been trying (and apparently failing!) to explain.

A diagnosed anxiety disorder is not the same as being a bit afraid of speaking in a group, going to the dentist etc. They are normal reactions to situations we’d rather not be in.

JanewaysBun · 29/03/2021 22:14

Heath ledger was only.ok as the joker.

ChelseeDagger · 29/03/2021 22:20

we should identify our sex by our chromosomes rather, than the abject shite that is gender identity.

If you want a man to look after you financially, then don't be surprised if they expect some form of obedience in return.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 29/03/2021 22:34

Timothy Dalton was the best James Bond. It's like he 'got it' when the other actors were trying to prove a point about themselves rather than playing the role correctly.

Not an unpopular opinion with me. Marvellous actor: and so attractive in that quiet, brooding, cerebral sort of way. And his voice: what is it about Welsh actors that they have such beautiful speaking voices? (cf. Anthony Hopkins and Richard Burton).

PS: I love my slow cooker.
PPS: Hot tubs are fine.

RosesAndHellebores · 29/03/2021 22:40

Totally agree about Timothy Dalton. Didn't realise he was Welsh though.

The4ks · 29/03/2021 22:57

Music, don't like the Beatles either or Elvis.

Can't stand Holly and Phil and do not think he was "brave" to come out.

Agree with all - Especially the TWATW - though I would add "TWAM" to that

And

Prawns are the food of the devil

They're just water insects.

Who wants to eat water insects . . . ?

AliceMadHatter · 29/03/2021 23:10

Why is having a dog selfish? As I look at my two who seem to have a life of leisure and fun

Why is having Children selfish? As I think of my Son upstairs with all he needs and more.

AliceMadHatter · 29/03/2021 23:13

Philip Schofield has started to annoy me, I don't want to see his feet or his face anymore.

DrunkBetch · 29/03/2021 23:18

Pizza is horrible!

DrunkBetch · 29/03/2021 23:21

@nevernotstruggling

Pugs are hideous. French bulldogs are ugly but not quite as ugly as pugs. Pugs crossed with anything beggars my belief
Haha my dog is a pug crossed with a French bulldog 🤣
