Inspired by a thread about bad singers. In your opinion, which singers have the best voices? I'll vote:

Michael Jackson
Stevie Wonder
James Morrison (underrated)
Christina Aguilera
Celion Dion
Mariah Carey
Whitney Houston
Joss Stone

Oops Marvin Gaye not Hayes.

DidgeDoolittle · 06/03/2021 05:13

I haven't read the whole thread so apologies if this has been said before.

My vote goes to the late Sandy Denny of Fairport Convention. Her voice is spine tingling. Robert Plant described her as having the perfect voice.
She is the only guest singer to have recorded with Led Zeppelin. She sang with Robert Plant on The Battle of Evermore. It's beautiful.
Her version of Knocking on Heavens Door is said by Bob Dylan to be his favourite.
Sadly she died far too young so she doesn't have a huge catalogue.
You can hear her on YouTube.

Sinead O'Connor.
I saw her live way back in (I think) 1986, supporting INXS. Nobody knew who she was, her name wasn't on the tickets or in the venue anywhere, and it was Just before Mandinka was released on single.
She just walked out into an almost empty auditorium (most people were in the bar)) opened her mouth and the most beautiful sound I ever heard began.
I still get goosebumps thinking about it now.
As she sang, people started to come from the bar to listen, and she got a standing ovation from a packed house at the end.
She was fucking amazing!

Ella Fitzgerald - in a league of her own. Also Kate Rusby, PJ Harvey, Bjork.

KeflavikAirport · 06/03/2021 06:56

you can actually get pitch analysis software these days!

Sure. But the most perfect pitch ever? Comparing her to every singer from around the world and across history? I don’t think so. Sorry, it just tickled my pedantic bone.

KeflavikAirport · 06/03/2021 07:00

It’s striking how contemporary and Pop focused these posts are so I’ll just add a couple more from different genres for you. First of all and most obviously we’re on page 8 and nobody has said Maria Callas. And I also adore Emma Kirkby. Give your ears a treat —especially if you think Adele is a good singer—

@Poppins2016

Beyonce is fantastic live (not someone I'd normally choose to see, so this is an objective opinion, I was very pleasantly surprised)!

Eva Cassidy.

I thought Beyoncé was rubbish! Saw her in Paris and myself, and a lot of other people, walked out before the end of the show.
groundcontroltomontydon · 06/03/2021 07:09

O and Michael Stipe

Sophie Ellis Bextor. She has a stunning and distinctive voice.

JMAngel1 · 06/03/2021 08:05

Just listened to Sandy Denny, yes beautiful voice. Reminds me of Natalie Merchant.

herblackwings · 06/03/2021 08:07

A couple that I don't think have been mentioned are Paul Rodgers and Lzzy Hale

purplesky18 · 06/03/2021 08:17

Has anyone said Paloma Faith? Saw her live a few years back, hands down best voice I’ve ever heard live in my life, beautiful.

Chester Bennington
Mick hucknall
Paolo Nutini (could listen all day, wish he would come back!)

BorderlineHappy · 06/03/2021 08:18

Brendon Urie is amazing.
He can certainly hit the high notes.

This is the best live vocal composition I have ever heard.

I went to see Cyndi Lauper at Shepherds Bush Empire a few years ago and her voice is astonishing live.

TuesdayinSeptember · 06/03/2021 11:57

Lisa Stansfield got missed off my list somehow.

Plump82 · 06/03/2021 12:00

@Minikievs

She's not in the league of Whitney etc, but Jessie J is actually WOW I don't think she ever gets the recognition she deserves
Probably because she's a pain in the arse!

For me I'd say -
Marti Pellow
Pink
George Michael
Little Mix
Lady GaGa

mammmamia · 06/03/2021 12:12

I love Sway by Bic Runga! Thanks for reminding me of that. It’s on the American Pie soundtrack. That makes me feel old but I used to love that soundtrack.
