Yes, good luck from me, too @DWPmisery1972. Hope it goes well for you.

Can't get excited about anything, but that's the product of having low expectations for so long. Glad about the schools though, was beginning to think that DS might never go back before the end of Y13.

amicissimma · 22/02/2021 21:59

It was great to see Chris Whitty spelling it out that Covid is going to join the other respiratory viruses and bacteria that claim lives every winter, despite vaccines (for some of them).

'... and this, I'm afraid, for the foreseeable future Coronavirus is going to be added to that list of things that those who are vulnerable, even despite vaccination, can be at risk of... And I think people need to see it in that way, not see it separate from others, but see it as something where vaccination will take the rates right down but they will not get rid of this. And this is something that we have to see for the long term.'

Watching A&E 24 hours which is filmed locally in Barnsley

The casualty doctor is Romanian, who did most of his training in Ireland and is now in Barnsley. His English is excellent - his accent is weird!!!

Iheartmysmart · 22/02/2021 22:29

Good luck tomorrow @DWPmisery1972

I was watching Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel the other evening and there is a great line in it along the lines of “I went with low expectations and came back disappointed”. Bit like life in general at the moment.

thefallthroughtheair · 22/02/2021 22:29

Just checking in.

thefallthroughtheair · 22/02/2021 22:44

@Worldgonecrazy

The school masks thread shows the absolute level of intelligence in this country. No evidence they work but at least the teachers willl ‘feel safer, as will those parents who have wound themselves and their kids into an anxious tizzy.
This. I put a slightly derogatory comment on there to the effect of 'masks are pointless but if they keep the scared happy and schools open, whatevs' type. But I can't believe (well I can but you know what I mean) that the government is pandering to this. The evidence in favour of masks is so weak and as a science geek that drives me insane. It's really like carrying around a perfumed posy to stave off the plague. But I guess if 'they' want it, it's a price I'll pay. Still feel very uncomfortable about it though - it feels like those moments when despite trying to be a firm parent you've been whined at by a toddler for so long that you just say 'oh fine eat the bloody sand cake with snails in it if you want it so badly' Grin
thefallthroughtheair · 22/02/2021 22:45

amicissima
Thank christ for that small moment of sense.

DWPmisery1972 · 23/02/2021 03:09

@justasking111 I’m sorry to hear about your struggles with getting answers- I had a CT on my head in the hospital car park at the beginning of covid (27th March 2020) so it was very bizarre but the people were very nice! I really hope you get some answers soon; you’ll be in my thoughts lovely AD stranger 🧡

Thank you for the well wishes everyone; I can’t sleep (ha! Predictable). Bricking it, worrying, just mind racing and worrying. I’ll be ok. Thank you for the advice- deep breaths, think before I speak. I can do this.

Thank you for your kindness. It’s so funny that none of us have met but I feel like you are my friends. You are so kind. Thank you, seriously. Flowers

DWPmisery1972 · 23/02/2021 04:06

@MercyBooth oh wtf 🙄

I’m 4th gen of immigrants from the Netherlands that escaped nazi occupation- May as well slap a fucking yellow star on me (sorry for the amateur dramatics but for fucks sake.)

ISaySteadyOn · 23/02/2021 06:15

@thefallthroughtheair, the masks really distress me. I'd rather have the perfumed posy. Then I could see people's faces and have pretty flowers.

As for the Guardian article, take what it says with a grain of salt and read what other newspapers say. To stop my brain turning to mush, I have been trying to read a bit in all the newspapers I can so I can get a bigger perspective. Which is a long-winded way of saying 'Don't worry too much!'

I am so glad they are spelling out that covid will not disappear. Lots of BD haven't actually realised that 'we will have to live with it' really does mean that it won't go, most people will be fine or a bit ill and a small number, LIKE WITH THE FLU, will die.

Phew, feels good to have got that off my chest.

Worldgonecrazy · 23/02/2021 06:37

I don’t get the vaccine passports. Why? For a disease that is actually, compared to a lot of others, relatively low risk? It’s nit like the government need from track us when we tell them and Twitter and Facebook and google our every thought and move? The conspiracy theorists have been saying since the start that they would be brought in, but I don’t understand why? I can see a rational explanation for keeping lockdown going and wrecking the economy and lives more (head in the sand and hide how shit it is for a bit longer) . I can see a rational explanation for masks (visible social compliance and make the plebs feel they have a control mechanism) but nothing rational about vaccine passports.

Blobby10 · 23/02/2021 06:51

Already spotted the first local restrictions- leicester (which hasn’t actually been out of lockdown!) still has the highest number of infections in the country 😩 Anyone fancy a small wager on when it will be announced they aren’t allowed out of lockdown?

LivinLaVidaLoki · 23/02/2021 06:54

Ooooo found you all. I also liked what was said about school opening and the magical R number. Though I did snort a bit at "not see it separate from others"
All I could think was "well stop publishing the daily figures then"

LivinLaVidaLoki · 23/02/2021 07:04

can't help but wonder, with the masks in school and college being an "added temporary measure" (wording from the guidance), up to the end of this term and the social distancing review over by mid April, does this mean masks are on their way out?

TooManyPlatesInMotion · 23/02/2021 07:19

I felt hugely relieved when both Boris and the scientists said this yesterday. Also, when Boris said that pursuing zero Covid was not a credible strategy... Then I took a walk to my corner shop only to see a few residents with "Zero Covid Charter" posters in their windows. Sigh.
bakingcupcakes · 23/02/2021 07:36

Good luck today @DWPmisery1972 You can most definitely do this!

I've ordered a second set of shoes online for DS thanks to my poor measuring skills.

I didn't watch the announcement. I've pretty much given up following the news. I also don't feel overly positive. Although (from what I've read) it sounds good I just feel like when the date gets nearer there'll be another excuse.

ISaySteadyOn · 23/02/2021 07:43

Me too.

Excellent in-the-field evidence about the efficacy of lockdowns!
Worldgonecrazy · 23/02/2021 08:00

@bakingcupcakes I hope /think that as Johnson, Whitby et al get their escape plans ready, they will just jump and not put further restrictions in place. I suspect Whitty and Ferguson will end up at the Blair canal. I’m not sure where Johnson will end up - perhaps an after dinner speaker for the blue rinse brigade?

@Worldgonecrazy

Someone shared ONS figures on another thread that showed secretaries are at higher risk of covid infection than teachers 😀😀😀. Maybe I should start throwing a hissy fit about going back to the office?
Hell fire, I'm surprised I'm not dead already?! Wink
