We always have mushrooms and chips.
But I'd like to do something fancy because life sucks.

What's a couple of good sides?

Mac and cheese and sweet potato fries, steamed veg, like broccoli, cauliflower or asparagus. With peppercorn sauce.Sometimes, I make creamed cabbage and garlic butter mushrooms
I make this as I am a vegetarian and my son loves steak

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 06/02/2021 19:39

*Creamed spinach! And cabbage steak for me.

@GiveMyRegardsToYourLizard

Me lovely. That does look awful. I had a thread a while ago where I said most people can't cook, and I got a pasting, but you could eat better than that. Was it great?

I could make your food better, you obviously care. Because you made the effort and asked the question.

Do you want to eat amazing things?

I'm not asking this as a twat but as a person that cares that you care. Honestly.

truetuesdays · 07/02/2021 01:15

Peppercorn sauce
Skinny fries
Watercress

I can't wait for my first meal out 😋😋😋

Philly Cheesesteaks!!

We had this for dinner this evening as I have been wanting to try them for ages... never had a proper one.
You need rib eye steaks and apparently provolone cheese (which is really hard to find in the UK... I bought some Italian hard cheese thing from Ocado but Edam works well too.)

You need to freeze the steaks for 40 mins before cooking to then allow you to slice as thin as possible. Cool steak slices and onions (I used shallots- which worked well). Then once steak is cooked add your mild cheese... Edam slices etc. The cheese will then melt and stick the steak together allowing you to transfer this into a sub roll... no mess!

I also made my own version of cheez whiz which was made on the hob with powdered onion powder, garlic powder, turmeric, sugar. Salt and Philadelphia cheese and cheddar.

It was amazingly good. A steak sandwich but a turbo one! Served with sweet gherkins, ketchup, yellow mustard... wedges, coleslaw and corn on the cob!

I was worried all day that the children would turn their noses up at it but they loved it.... cheesy steak... what could go wrong!

nightscreams · 07/02/2021 02:12

Hasselback potatoes
Peppercorn sauce

DeRigueurMortis · 07/02/2021 02:26

Proper frites, a crisp green salad, blue cheese Béarnaise sauce and a warmed baguette with french butter.

Or

Pommes Anna, grilled asparagus (with grated Parmesan), peppercorn sauce and a warmed baguette with french butter.

Nothing else comes remotely close....

But FFS buy decent steak in the first place. Ideally from a butcher as it needs to be thick (not the skinny slices you get even in the supermarket premium ranges). At least 2 inches thick for a perfect steak.

Blazing hot pan. Oil on the steaks not the pan. Season with salt (not pepper as it will burn). In pan don't move for 4 mins to develop a crust. Turn and 4 mins. Turn down heat.

Add a very generous amount of butter plus a couple of cloves of garlic and a sprig of Rosemary and baste the steaks for 2 mins.

Take the steaks to rest on a pre-warmed plate for 5 mins at least. Then enjoy.

Job done ✅

HoppingPavlova · 07/02/2021 05:12

Baby potatoes and broccolini.

ShrikeAttack · 07/02/2021 05:35

@DeRigueurMortis, whilst I agree with most of what you say, two inches for a standard steak a measure is madness. 1.5 inches for a sirloin is very generous, and about right.

Two inches is only ok for a really fat and luxy fillet.

ShrikeAttack · 07/02/2021 05:45

Actually I don't agree with what you say. Asparagus isn't an accompaniment to steak.

Asparagus is a vegetable to be enjoyed by itself, in a few ways, in its short season. It's not a generic luxury vegetable. Stop it.

And blue cheese Béarnaise? No. I don't think tarragon and blue cheese go.

You talk good nonsense.

But it's still nonsense.

1forAll74 · 07/02/2021 06:21

a good steak, with grilled tomatoes and onions and mushrooms. and rocket and spinach to garnish, and best of all, some hot mustard.

Peanutbutterblood · 07/02/2021 07:38

Peas with steak? No no no. And the person who said mash Confused

Garlic prawns, add some boursin to the mushrooms

Next weekend I'm doing lobster tails with steak for valentines day

Do you do the chips properly? If you use oven chips then homemade ones will taste extra special

HmmI think I remember that thread.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 07/02/2021 07:59

Where do you buy your steak?

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 07/02/2021 08:08

We buy ours from the butcher - generally worth paying a.bit more, but Aldi carry a range of 36 day matured steak which is amazing.

Atalune · 07/02/2021 08:15

Agree Aldi “something special” steak is delicious. That or my butcher.

I use my heavy bottomed griddle pan to cook steak and the deglaze to make my sauce. I also let rest for about 20 minutes. Steak should cut like butter.

floofycroissant · 07/02/2021 08:15

Butter bean mash. Vine roasted tomatoes, Balsamic mushrooms

Longdistance · 07/02/2021 08:22

Dauphinois potatoes, asparagus and onion rings. Sauce - Roquefort cheese.

monkeysonthemoon · 07/02/2021 08:28

@Mycatismadeofstringcheese

This chimichuri recipe is wonderful with steak.

cafedelites.com/authentic-chimichurri-uruguay-argentina/

Usually make that and have it with green beans.

was going to say that chimichurri is the ONLY sauce to have with steak, but you beat me to it AND linked to the same recipe I use! It is sooooo good, and goes well with other meats and fish too.
Roussette · 07/02/2021 08:41

Had our steak last night. Huge thick Ribeye for DH, fillet for me. His was so thick, I had to get a brown crust on it then put it in a v hot oven to finish off.
Had roasted peppers and mushrooms and hasselback potatoes with it.
Plus I deglazed the pan with some worcester sauce and a dash of cream.
Delicious!

I have to say, I've never been able to cook steaks as well on any other hob but induction. I think it depends on the type of pan you use.

Empressofthemundane · 07/02/2021 08:46

Love a link @monkeysonthemoon, thanks!

Agree, @Atalune, Aldi top of the range meats are very good. Both aged beef and free range chicken.

Rude.

I know it looks thrown together but that's because we have three kids, a million of other things going on and about 10 seconds to throw together something.
We haven't done this in years, usually we have to
order in.
We used to cook great food before kids.

It isn't that I can't, it's that I don't have time.

But thanks for your unbelievably patronising message.

OP ignore @ShrikeAttack the thread she emotions was ridiculous (and also hilarious) the anger onnabkit being the only person in the Uk that could cook then gave an example of a menu that most of us would make albeit with more expensive ingredients (think pheasant in place of chicken, duck eggs instead of hens). It was also very high in fat and green veg non existent, im surprised they all don't have gout.
It was also funny when a poster found a copy of an online shopping list of hers from another thread that was full of the ready meals OP claims never to use, freezer food and prepared deserts - oh and copious amounts of wine which I'd say she's been hitting to be posting this nonsense to you at 1.30am. I'm sure your food tasted lovely even if by your own admission, it wasn't posh restaurant standard presentation. I fancy steak now!

I thought your meal looked really tasty! Was it stuffed mushrooms? Bloody love them.

Wished I'd taken a pic of my steak meal last night. Looked like a mess on the plate but my god, it tasted divine!

Yes, a bit over cooked though, middle DS wanted to play a game of cards 😁

The pastry parcel was asparagus, prosciutto and Brie.
