We always have mushrooms and chips.
But I'd like to do something fancy because life sucks.

What's a couple of good sides?

This is going to be contraversial.

I love mash with steak.

Agree with the pp who expressed a preference for plainer potato with steak!

Buttered spinach/ asparagus also awesome.

NiceGerbil · 06/02/2021 14:17

If I'm having chips I like my steak to have salad.

If it's mash then veg obviously.

NiceGerbil · 06/02/2021 14:19

Steak from Donald Russell is well worth the price- they do a lot of offers.

You get it in a special cold box thing with dry ice packing that can go in a chest freezer. I don't have one sadly so unpack it all but never mind! DD says their burgers and sausages are the best she's ever tasted.

Nuggetknuckles · 06/02/2021 14:20

This is making me seriously hungry! Every ounce of willpower needed to not go and buy steak now!

HopingForOurRainbowBaby · 06/02/2021 14:20

Garlic mash

BrunelsBigHat · 06/02/2021 14:22

My Swiss friend makes this risotto, which is amazing with steak.

Possibly culinary sacrilege to serve it like that.but I don’t care

Make it slightly less sloppy that a true risotto though, so that is sits on a plate rather than in a bowl. Works best with an irresponsible amount of cheese. And add a side of roasted cherry tomatoes.

TooMinty · 06/02/2021 14:23

I like sweet potato wedges (with rosemary, garlic and chilli flakes on them), garlic mushrooms in creme fraiche, roasted asparagus, lightly griddled vine tomatoes. Not usually all at the same time! And a bottle of Malbec 🍷

CuriousaboutSamphire · 06/02/2021 14:24

Red pepper cut in half. Each half gets any combination of tinned tomato, fennel bulb, olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Grill or oven for as long as you want. They can sit in the oven for an hour and be all soft and squishy or just warmed through to be a bit less crunchy. It's entirely up to you.

We usually leave the tomato and grill them to get the edge of the peppers charred.

Top with parmesan.

If you want the full recipe I think it's a Delia 😊

Hasselback potatoes and salad with pepper sauce poured over the whole lot

ChequerBoard · 06/02/2021 14:38

We had steak last night and had three sides with it - Stir fried Brussels sprouts with chestnuts, oven roasted squash and cauliflower and mushrooms and onions fried in the steak pan to absorb the yummy meatiness. Utterly delicious!!

AprilThe8th · 06/02/2021 14:45

Creamy homemade mash, green beans and pepper sauce 😋

AnaisNun · 06/02/2021 14:46

Oh why not make a Vietnamese steak salad if you fancy a change

midnightstar66 · 06/02/2021 14:46

I like something green - either peas, asparagus or garlicky green beans, chunky chips or paraminter potatoes, onion rings, a large stuffed mushroom and a blue cheese sauce

plumpootle · 06/02/2021 14:49

I really like salad with steak - great contrast

PickAChew · 06/02/2021 14:50

Roasted veg.
Buttery greens.
Marinade it in cumin, chilli, coriander (herb type) and lime and have it fajita style.

shouldreallynamechangemore · 06/02/2021 14:56

Green beans fried in butter and garlic like in France. Yum.

hashbrownsandwich · 06/02/2021 14:58

Chimmichuri sauce or romesco sauce.

Parmentier potatoes or chips. Always.

CaraDuneRedux · 06/02/2021 15:03

Big fan of tomatoes, red onion and basil salad (think it reminds me of trips to France when I was young). Also asparagus. But you're right, OP, you can't go far wrong with mushrooms sauteed in butter.

Kotbullar · 06/02/2021 15:07

Stilton mashed potatoes, peppercorn sauce and asparagus.

Roussette · 06/02/2021 15:10

Chips with steak is boring. Much prefer hasselback potatoes, so so easy to do and just taste more interesting.

Roasted peppers, mushroom and courgettes

Bernaise sauce for me. English mustard for DH

That's it

CeefBurry · 06/02/2021 15:11

Oh my goodness.

This is making me starving.

😋😋😋😋😋

pickingdaisies · 06/02/2021 15:21

For goodness sake. I have leftover kedgeree to finish off but now all I want is steak. Which I don't have, so it's going on my next shopping list.
Fried red onions, deglaze the pan with red wine vinegar. Petits pois with butter, and some rocket to cut through all that lovely fat. Cheers Wine

pickingdaisies · 06/02/2021 15:22

And chips, I forgot the chips! Or, in my case, home made oven wedges.

AdaColeman · 06/02/2021 15:22

Cauliflower cheese and steak is a match made in heaven, and impossible to beat!

Other good things....
Serve the steak onto a bed of bitter leaves eg rocket, endive, baby spinach. Scatter over capers and diced gherkins with Caesar salad dressing.

Serve with ratatouille with plenty of chopped black olives stirred into it.

happysunr1se · 06/02/2021 15:24

I eat steak with fragrant rice, teriyaki sauce, steamed spinach with sesame dressing and carrot and ginger pickles.
