As if the world doesn't have enough to deal with without him inciting that sort of thing.

CNN have interviewed a stream of Republican congressmen who all said Trump needs to concede and stop claiming electoral fraud. For those who didn't know how people were watching CNN, it's on Freesat - not sure if it's on Freeview too.

Well, they don't put their reporters in the middle of it. Hmm

You need to watch CNN.

@Miljea

And I'm still not seeing a violent mob surging forward to overthrow the capital.
Those who got into the building didn't just show their passes to security. They stormed the building.
Miljea · 06/01/2021 22:17

curlyhairedassassin I'm a lot less surprised than I would have been 5 years ago, if I'm honest.

Yes, this is 'new' but it appears to have very much run out of steam. This isn't 'a coup' by international standards.

GoldenLabbie · 06/01/2021 22:17

@Miljea

Did you not see the clip of them smashing their way in through the doors then?
CurlyhairedAssassin · 06/01/2021 22:17

There are a few sides to the building too. Some look quieter than others.

Bless you, Miljea, that's why you're not a journalist.

If you can't understand what is extraordinary about this and why it's a big deal, I'm guessing life, politics and history swim around you as a largely undifferentiated soup.

Miljea · 06/01/2021 22:18

wiwfudge it sounds as if security shrugged and let them in. Hence images of aimless 'protestors' wandering around, inside, going 'Now what?'

Wales34 · 06/01/2021 22:18

@JulesM73

It is totally crazy, I’m glued to CNN!

Trump is a parasite and he’s whipping this up......... How can anyone honestly think he is suitable to run a bath let alone USA for another 4 years.

I wouldn't watch CNN its way too bias . Twitter has the most objective coverage as ita live feed from people there
Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 06/01/2021 22:18

Pipe bomb found in or near Capitol. Thugs forced their way in. They're up against armed police so this being the US they will be armed too. Forced their way into offices and looked through contents of desks and at emails still on screen. Stole property. I'd say this is a violent mob.

wowfudge · 06/01/2021 22:18

@Miljea - an hour ago those steps behind the reporter were crowded with these idiot Trump supporters. Since then Biden has been on TV and asked them to stop and Trump to tell them go home and Trump has told them he loves them and they should go home.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 06/01/2021 22:19

Well, a coup would suggest that the mob has taken real control. Inside the building has been secured quite quickly it seems. So it's not right to call it a coup, I haven't seen it called that anywhere.

Nope, I recognise that a building, walked into by a couple of hundred overwrought protestors - does not represent a blow to the heart of American Democracy.

I would hope that that democracy is stronger than that!

Would you rather there was a gun battle? Apparently the defense dept refused to deploy the National Guard. You can bet your bottom dollar that if anyone had fired on these people all hell would have broken loose. Plus the police and security staff were busy protecting the democratically elected representatives inside the chamber.
wowfudge · 06/01/2021 22:23

@Miljea - tear gas was used in the Capitol building. Does that satisfy you?

AuntyPasta · 06/01/2021 22:23

A building full of the legislature that had to lock themselves in their offices or shelter in place. Protestors who intended to prevent the result of a democratic election being certified.

Miljea · 06/01/2021 22:24

I almost think you wanted a 'gun battle' to break out!

Security maybe recognised that this was a bunch of overwrought fanatics who needed the wind taken out of heir sails.

I think this has happened.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 06/01/2021 22:24

It's a blow to the US, though, @Miljea. This will just make the whole world cringe for the state of the US and how they can't manage to get democracy right.

Maybe that should be the slogan next time "Let's get democracy right this time"

’Security maybe recognised that this was a bunch of overwrought fanatics who needed the wind taken out of heir sails.’

Armed fanatics that brought their own tear gas.

thecatfromjapan · 06/01/2021 22:26

Well, the Republicans locked in the basement alongside Democrats are probably less sanguine.

I think attempts to re-write this as a scuffle by the overwrought are going to take little while.

Too soon, M., too soon.

Who wanted a gun battle? There were many hundreds of people in that mob and the police were well outnumbered. In a country where the right to bear arms is enshrined in the constitution.
CurlyhairedAssassin · 06/01/2021 22:28

By the way, you're surprised at protestors just wondering round inside going "what next?" Really? You think they are intelligent enough to have an actual plan? This section of the population is the equivalent of Beavis and Butthead excited that their parents have just gone out for the night.

I think Trump is soon going to be bumped off by the authorities and he expects it- speaking behind bullet proof glass tonight. I've never before known of someone with such fragile ego, low self-esteem/self-awareness that he'd rather risk this than concede.
