Do you think you look better with or without makeup?

I think I look terrible without make up - ugly and old (which I am now but even so) and terribly self conscious.

I will never leave the house without any make up on unless I absolutely have to, and I would be really embarrassed if anyone dropped by unexpectedly (remember those days?!).

I wish I had the confidence to go without - but I don't.

Pre 40 I looked great without make-up, it made me look younger. I'd slap on a bit of nice moisturiser and off I'd go.

Now, 8 years later, I look much better with make-up and am pretty disappointed with my no make-up look.

BarryTheKestrel · 28/12/2020 20:10

I used to be a can't leave the house without at least concealer and eyeliner person, even just to the corner shop. However since March I've been going without as I haven't been out much and I forget i don't have anything on for school runs, supermarket trips etc. However I do think that I look worse this past year but that's more because I've been working on my skin rather than covering it up. Its smoother and has less acne but the acne scars don't get covered with concealer as frequently now.

I’m another one with invisible eyebrows and eyelashes. So I look so much better with eyebrows and eyelashes. Other than that I don’t bother much.

without, absolutely. Haven't worn it since my twenties, and never could get on with the mucky feel of lipstick.

zoom features adding eyebrows and lipstick just show how awful it looks. Now middle aged, wrinkled and a bit saggy but so what? Slap just looks clownish.

I've NEVER had the 'tired/ill' comments unless I actually am one of those. Perhaps because I rarely associate with women? Or perhaps not with generally rude fuckwits?

the80sweregreat · 28/12/2020 20:26

.. With make up but I'm older now and need some slap now and again ( bit of lippy cheers me up too)

CountFosco · 28/12/2020 20:28

I CBA to wear makeup. But lucky to be in a profession where it doesn't matter. Agree with the PP who said different but not better. TBH I think most people look worse with makeup, it's always fake. Not keen on dyed hair either. But I'm sure someone who wears makeup every day would think most people look better with it, it's just what you are used to.

1FootInTheRave · 28/12/2020 20:30

I only really wear bronzer and mascara. Suspect I look better with than without.

Atm I look like I've been exhumed and beaten with the shovel.

Nyctophyllia · 28/12/2020 20:35

I love love love makeup, I look way better with it but I can apply it really well, im lucky enough to have big eyes and full lips and just love playing about with different colors and looks

NeonSparkle · 28/12/2020 20:36

With but my husband says without. I think he’s a bloody liar Grin

Crazycrazylady · 28/12/2020 20:46

I found that as i age . Make up ages me more.. I have stated using st tropes facial tan for during the week and I think it's a really good compromise as my skin in just very pale but in reasonable condition

nevernotstruggling · 28/12/2020 21:42

I dislike men who say they prefer the no make up look...I find it weirdly controlling and a bit of a red flag.

I agree with this. But also I think men arnt great at spotting more subtle make up so are likely to think there's none. It's a hugely patronising and horrible comment though

Namechangeme87 · 28/12/2020 21:49

Men always say this and I think what they mean by it is they don’t like the overly made up look. I don’t think they can spot the natural make up as being make up . Iv had this a few times with guys iv dated “ you look so natural I like that “

And I was definitely wearing - brow powder , mascara and lip balm/ oil

Oh and botox and fillers

Suckerssssss

TheChosenTwo · 28/12/2020 21:54

I think my face looks brighter with a bit of makeup! I sometimes wear a full face (although by full face I mean a light coverage foundation, I’m not skilled enough to get away with full coverage!) and sometimes wear nothing.
I have quite full natural eyebrows and my lashes aren’t sparse, I don’t look like a monster without it and I certainly don’t think twice about leaving the house or going to work barefaced.
If I have the time though, I will slap some on before going out, it makes me look a bit more polished and I like that. I do own lots of makeup, I enjoy buying it and messing around with it.

Trailing1 · 28/12/2020 21:55

Throughout my 20's I always wore makeup.... at 30 years of age I suffered extreme PND and stopped giving a shit about my appearance.
I'm no longer ill but I never went back to makeup. I tried once and had really lost the knack, ended up looking like a clown. Grin I feel I look fine without it though.

Deathraystare · 29/12/2020 08:27

Better with but only because despite having chestnut coloured hair my lashes and brows are very light and in fact I only have the first part of each brow (no tail) and they are very pale -you would think I was blonde!!! Not much of them either!

Not bothered about being seen sans foundation though I am slightly red around my nose and upper cheek.

HRHRomy · 29/12/2020 08:30

everyone looks better with the right make up and i mean everyone.
If you think you don't then you aren't applying it right.

EchoLimaYankee · 29/12/2020 08:35

Yes! @MoodyMarshall. The red head struggle is real. Washed out and like a potato without tint/mascara/brow stuff. Also BB/foundation helps because my skin is so pale and freckly.

SelfIcellation · 29/12/2020 08:50

I don't look as tired with make-up on but I generally cannot be arsed.

I am in my 40s and have never found a base that didn't give me spots. I have deep wrinkles on my forehead and make-up gets in there and I end up with cakey lines.

Eyeshadow isdifficult to apply and stay because if my deep-set piggy eyes.

If I need a boost I wear eyeliner, mascara and a bit of neutral lip colour. My husband doesn't care if I'm made up or not.

Shelby30 · 29/12/2020 09:00

I definitely look better with it. Since the pandemic though I've actually been out without make up on which is totally unheard of for me.

I've mostly stopped wearing foundation day to day. I used to wear, foundation, eyeliners, mascara, eyebrow pencil, blusher and lipstick. Now it's pretty much mascara and eyebrow pencil. I just kinda think what's the point when my face is covered with a face mask lol.

BogRollBOGOF · 29/12/2020 09:03

I look more polished with light make-up, but CBA and only wear it for special occasions. That's once in 2020...

My colouring is strong enough to look decent without and my skin is clear. Heavy make-up does it no favours. I never developed the habit as my skin was sensitive and prone to eczema as a teenager. Eczema on the eyelids was very sore and not a great look.

EmpressWitchDoesntBurn · 29/12/2020 09:05

No idea. I haven’t worn it since university 25 years ago, can’t be arsed & I’m happy with my face as it is.

Pinkyandthebrainz · 29/12/2020 09:05

I look better with - fresher, more of a glow.
But I barely wear it now. I used to wear it everyday. I have good skin which helps, but I do look tired around the eyes without concealer and mascara and a bit sallow without blusher. I'm late 20s however, so if you ask in me in 5 years/10 years time I may be wearing it everyday again.

DappledThings · 29/12/2020 09:24

@HRHRomy

everyone looks better with the right make up and i mean everyone. If you think you don't then you aren't applying it right.
I just don't accept that. A lot of people look more polished with make up on, different in lots of ways but not better or worse. On the rare occasions I wear any then yes I probably have a more even skin tone (I have rosacea so am usually quite red and with a bit of a rash) and I look dressed up and more "presented". But I don't feel I look better, just a different version of myself.
LollipopViolet · 29/12/2020 09:27

I look awful without it but don't think I look much better with it. I wear it for nights out but still think I'm ugly even with it.

PlanDeRaccordement · 29/12/2020 09:30

I think I look better without makeup. I very rarely wear it. And even when I do, it’s just a bit of tinted moisturiser or powder.
