Do you think you look better with or without makeup?

I think I look terrible without make up - ugly and old (which I am now but even so) and terribly self conscious.

I will never leave the house without any make up on unless I absolutely have to, and I would be really embarrassed if anyone dropped by unexpectedly (remember those days?!).

I wish I had the confidence to go without - but I don't.

With! I don’t leave the house without it.

@formerbabe
In my opinion, men who say they prefer women to wear no make up are invariably passing judgment on women who do

How bizarre to think that merely having a preference means you must therefore pass a negative judgement against all others with a different preference.

In theory, I agree. In practice, that's my experience.

So does this apply to women also? Do you think that all the women on here who have said they prefer not to wear makeup are invariably passing judgement on all the women who do wear makeup?

MillieVanilla · 29/12/2020 15:42

I would scare small children without make up
I very rarely go out without it. I don't wear a shedload as I'm not up to all that highlighting and contouring stuff.
But I think I look dog rough without make up

Changi · 29/12/2020 15:45

It takes five minutes unless you’re doing a full face...

That still adds up to over a day wasted every year on something that gives me no tangible benefit.

No.

I'm just saying from my experience that when men say they prefer the no make look, it's a red flag.

Whether a woman chooses to wear make up or not is entirely her business and her preference.

RumJerrySailorRum · 29/12/2020 15:53

I do look better with it, but I can't be arsed to put it on very often.

I'm very happy with how I look without it though.

volcan0 · 29/12/2020 15:54

@LubaLuca

I have rosacea with pustules and very raw-looking redness, so I'm definitely better with makeup. Everyone agrees with this Grin
Have you tried azelaic acid?
volcan0 · 29/12/2020 15:54

I do look better with makeup but it's been so long since I've worn it everyday that it now feels odd and overdone

volcan0 · 29/12/2020 15:58

@murbblurb

without, absolutely. Haven't worn it since my twenties, and never could get on with the mucky feel of lipstick.

zoom features adding eyebrows and lipstick just show how awful it looks. Now middle aged, wrinkled and a bit saggy but so what? Slap just looks clownish.

I've NEVER had the 'tired/ill' comments unless I actually am one of those. Perhaps because I rarely associate with women? Or perhaps not with generally rude fuckwits?

Erm, men say those comments too

A red flag for who exactly?

For the woman? It's a controlling thing to say

Is preferring make up controlling too? In your opinion.

Bluntness100 · 29/12/2020 16:11

I would agree anyone who wears make up logically does so becayse they think they look better with it. Otherwise they would not do so.

I just look different. With lock down I’ve been wearing make up rarely and am now more used to what I look like with out it. And I think I look fine. If a little washed out. I still will make an effort when socialising or for work, but I don’t bother if popping to the shops.

As for men, in my experience men usually say they prefer women who don’t wear make up, it’s code for I prefer naturally attractive women. In nearly all instances though the women they fancy wear make up.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 29/12/2020 16:17

I think you're probably right there; but isn't that just what you'd expect, though? In this context (and others), 'I prefer' is the same as saying 'I find most attractive'. Therefore, they're just effectively saying that they're most attracted to those whom they find the most attractive!?!

Ginfordinner · 29/12/2020 16:30

Of course it isn't Hmm
It's just a personal preference. I don't find overweight men attractive. Is it controlling to say that I prefer slim men?

I still maintain the the men who say they don't like make up on women are referring to the barbie doll clones with loads of make up. I don't find the over made up look attractive either.

formerbabe · 29/12/2020 16:33

In theory it's fine to have a preference.

In practice, I find men who outwardly admit they prefer the no make up look are usually misogynistic arseholes.

My dh is one of those. A non-make up preference. Not a misogynistic arsehole.

You must know some strange men.

VettiyaIruken · 29/12/2020 17:15

I'm ugly so makeup really does fuck all. I just look like an ugly person wearing make up. I've come to terms with it. 🤷‍♀️

MrsFluffyMuff · 29/12/2020 17:17

My OH hates makeup. He also hates the way the beauty industry plays on the insecurities of women to make them feel they aren't good enough as they are, so they spend money trying to look 'better' and in turn, make these companies a fortune. He thinks all women are perfect the way they are. He hates the society our daughters will grow up in, where they are made to feel as though they aren't attractive enough without makeup, and like they need to spend a fortune to look good. I think he's the opposite of a misogynistic arsehole to be honest.

doadeer · 29/12/2020 17:19

I'm surprised how many women say they don't wear any, in the street, on Zoom calls etc, this isn't what I see.

Even beautiful celebrities look better with a bit of makeup, it's designed to enhance what you have... It doesn't mean crazy orange foundation and huge brows.

I think men who say they don't like makeup mean they don't like a huge amount to extent you look a different person. They mean they want a natural beauty (ha!)

I spend a lot of time on my skin, I love my evening routine and it's good because it's meant I don't need to wear foundation anymore.

I would really miss never wearing lipstick, I love to wear all sorts of colours though it's tricky with a mask! It's also not super practical for my life which involves kissing my toddler a lot!

I'd also say many young women and teens I know wear a huge amount of makeup. So many layers I didn't even know existed at their age, and if you watch a Charlotte Tilbury instagram video she uses about 30 items! So someone is still going for a full face look!

formerbabe · 29/12/2020 17:20

What I found they're basically saying is women who aren't beautiful enough naturally aren't worth my time or that they judge women who do wear make up as frivolous and superficial. Or they're just controlling aresholes.

Like I said, it's the equivalent imo as declaring themselves as a nice guy.

Dh just likes the way I look. He has no issue with me wearing make up if I want to.

MrsFluffyMuff · 29/12/2020 17:22

@Formerbabe i do know men like that too so you do have a point!
