So when are we collectively going to start saying no? Taking to the streets?

Jourdain11 · 19/12/2020 20:18

DD2 avidly watched a protest on tv and has now made a very colourful banner that reads "set us fre and let us go too Macdonelds if we want to". The last bit may be aimed at me though!

I want to try to get DD1 to the doctor asap. I'm scared she's just not going to cope over the next week, and I'm not being "hyperbolic" as people on the Crazy Corona Board would say, I'm genuinely very worried!

Justgivemewine · 19/12/2020 20:22

@Jourdain11

Thank you. I hope she'll feel a bit brighter tomorrow. I'm just so tired, I don't know what to do and what to say any more. I want to think and to say that things will get better, but I feel so sad inside.
@Jourdain11

Apologies if this sounds cheesy or patronising, it’s not meant to be, but when ds1 was going through a bad time, including self harm/depression we found the best approach was just ‘be there’ to give him hugs/reassurance/listen to him and his concerns/let him know he was loved etc. I realised I didnt need to have all the answers or be able to the magically say the right things to make him better because basically that’s not how it works.

ISaySteadyOn · 19/12/2020 20:23

@Jourdain11, Flowers. I hope she feels better. My DD1 has felt very sad too. Tell yours she is not alone.

And Flowers to everyone who has had their plans messed up.

Justgivemewine · 19/12/2020 20:25

Xpost, absolutely get her to the doctor as well though if necessary

You are right, get a docs appointment, they have been dealing with this for months now so will have a good idea how to help. My DS thought he had ADHD just could not concentrate at uni. wanted drugs for it. It has taken him a week to unwind he is much better now. His older brother said in his time the crazy pressure was balanced out by getting yourself into rugby, nightclubs/pubs at the weekend and letting loose. I had never heard that theory before but I guess it makes sense.
BogRollBOGOF · 19/12/2020 20:32

DS1's birthday treat has been a McDonalds drive-thru. That weirdly felt like progress on DS2's Easter Sunday birthday when it was only the daily walk for light relief (which the weather was on the grotty side to enjoy that day)

Jourdain, I really wish you good health and for your DD's difficulties to ease. It's horrible when your children are struggling and there's liitlevyou can do to ease it Sad

If it was the Parliament Square one, my naice rich middle class friend was there and got thoroughly manhandled by police.

She was just... there...but I think a 60 something petite lady is an easy target. I’m so grateful to her for standing up.

RobinHobb · 19/12/2020 20:33

I wanted to go anyway for our Xmas plans (seeing in laws). I love them to bits and kids were super excited. But they are law abiding and said no. They live a couple of hours away. Who knows when we will see them next.'DH has just been to the shops trying to buy a turkey (!) and food since we were planning to go day after and our fridge is empty.

Watch now: schools 100% going to be shut now in January.
I honestly don't know how I will cope

I don’t know how much you know so I apologise if I’m teaching granny to suck eggs but if they give her meds, your mental state can get worse before it gets better. Flowers

Don't know how you are coping
I can't think of anything to say that isn't trite
It's horrific seeing this with your kids - it hurts so much

Bollss · 19/12/2020 20:45

Oh no. Please not shutting schools.

NastyBlouse · 19/12/2020 21:07

Checking in. Jourdain that’s terrible, your poor daughter. The way the impacts of this have been minimised and pooh-poohed is a scandal.

I’ve been getting hung up on semantics and musing on how ‘transmissible’ and ‘contagious’ don’t quite mean the same thing and how they were very careful to say one of them lots of times and not the other.

justasking111 · 19/12/2020 21:09

All week I have had this sense of impending doom, switched off news, fb pages where the government were speaking, just felt the 23 -27th would not be enough for them with the high cases in s wales. In a way weirdly I feel better that we now know for sure that only xmas day will be allowed and shopping is off the cards. It cannot get any worse barring prohibition. Feel so upset for my DS whose newly refurbed restaurant which he bought last year has suffered so badly as has our tourism I grieve for businesses going under. I cannot fathom the dicking about the governments have been doing to our country. France has opened up again in time for xmas, my friend there is happy about that. Friends in USA are seeing high figures with absolutely no end in sight. It has caused deep divisions in their family with covid deniers refusing to rein in their lives at all, when they are doing what they can to stay safe whilst still visiting empty beaches at 7am because later on Miami is out in force it is one long vacation for them.

ProfessorRadcliffeEmerson · 19/12/2020 21:12

Your poor DS, @justasking111. I feel awful for business owners.

TabbyStar · 19/12/2020 21:16

Carl Heneghan has asked on Twitter if anyone has seen evidence of the 70% more transmissable thing, but no one seems to know where the evidence is.

NeedWineNow · 19/12/2020 21:22

Checking in here. It is so depressing tonight. We are dropping Xmas presents to DM tomorrow and she will be seeing DB and family at Xmas as they are support bubble. We had planned to form bubble with another couple Xmas Day but we're now doing FaceTime on Xmas Eve instead. Flowers to anyone really struggling this evening.

justasking111 · 19/12/2020 21:24

One of OHs mates on their sporting whats app group has been drowning his sorrows tonight he just said "I`m as pissed as me grans mattress", we collapsed in hysterical laughter here. Well you have got to find your laughs where you can. If you knew him you would understand why it is so funny.

They found that evidence terribly quick, ahem.
Jourdain11 · 19/12/2020 21:27

I mean, if this was a government that lied to the Queen, based a general election campaign on a fiction, passed bills enabling them to break international law and presented skewed statistics, you might be suspicious. Thank God that doesn't apply, hmm?

justasking111 · 19/12/2020 21:28

@ProfessorRadcliffeEmerson

Your poor DS, *@justasking111*. I feel awful for business owners.
Ah thank you, we know so many small business owners you run out of things to say to them, We are small business owners retired now ourselves but feel their pain. You are a family with your employees and celebrate commiserate every joyful and sad thing that happens in their lives. To have to phone them at a few hours notice and tell them they are furloughed again for the third time is bloody hard.
Seriouslymole · 19/12/2020 21:31

Just checking in to share the misery.

@Jourdain11 - we had the same with DS1 during the first lock down. He has been a different after counselling. I wish you well - it is not easy.

I worry so much about our civil liberties being completely eroded - this is like a dictatorship at the moment. Once they’ve gone it’s very hard to retrieve them. We have to start saying no but I don’t know how.

Reedwarbler · 19/12/2020 21:38

Of course there couldn't be a vote in the commons about this as they've broken up for Christmas. Convenient that, isn't it? Hardly democracy in action. Resist people, resist.

flower11 · 19/12/2020 21:40

I bet boris is still going to see his family on Christmas day. All my two wanted was to see grandma and grandad, that they have seen once this year who are now locked up in tier 4. My 5 year old is singing all I want for Christmas is coronavirus to go away.

Jourdain11 · 19/12/2020 21:44

I'm suspicious about the timing also. If they announced this earlier in the week they would have had to vote and I have doubts it would have passed.

Apparently the main London railway stations are rammed this evening. Announcements on the concourse are that social distancing isn't possible because of the volume of passengers. One of my friends and two of DH's colleagues have packed up and left London tonight! Exactly what happened in Italy when they announced regional lockdowns in Feb.
