We might be craving tiles, but we'll leave the woodchip and artex alone unless we're feeling very brave...

Welcome into another thread covering the whole range of life and death, novelty vegetables, DIY, any other randomness and musings about a certain pandemic.

@justasking111 love that post - made me giggle after reading the nurse's "experience" as posted by her "friend" over on the 'rona board. It's given me a bit of the rage but maybe I am a heartless cow...

flower11 · 09/12/2020 16:08

Bog are your DC isolating or is your school shutting early. We have so many classes out people have asked for school to shut, but head says she can't. Think people are thinking of 23rd.
My Ds is isolating till 19th, dd is at school but if anything else happens then my parents won't be able to come for xmas .
They live 5 hours drive away so will have to be all or nothing.

amicissimma · 09/12/2020 16:16

Phew, Jourdain11, that's a relief. Hope you feel better soon.

I've been living dangerously. Went for a coffee with friends in the outside area of a local cafe. They are using the word 'outside' in its broadest possible sense. However, two tables down, so further 'in', was my GP with a friend. If the local doctor isn't killing grannies, nor are we.

BogRollBOGOF · 09/12/2020 16:32

Just a day earlier on the 17th rather than the 18th. Possibly an INSET on the 4th too, although I hadn't actually though ahead into any practicalities in 2021 Grin

Fortunately only two classes have missed a week (overlapping into H/T) in the school. Local cases peaked around then and are right down.

DS1 has come out and melted down today. The final straw was leaving his water bottle in the classroom, but the real trigger was probably the virtual panto (he's not a fan of panto). It's been a while since he's done headbanging and I ended up putting my hand between his head and the brick wall of the building. Fortunately the teacher still had one child left and sent her out to give it to him as he couldn't bring himself to go in and ask. Normally I'd send DS2 in to ask. I made DS2 walk home on the opposite side of the road to keep him at a safe distance (He understands why!). Definitely an immediate snack and coke evening.
It's beem a while since we had a big dose of end-of-termitis.

Get well soon @Jourdain11 ps your daughter sounds amazing Grin

Our school is closing on the 17th too. A home learning day appaz. Well some of us (ahem I'm an NHS worker don't u no) have to fucking work so I'll be working from home looking after a 4 year old cos I'm fucked if I'm taking annual leave at their bloody whim.

AcornAutumn · 09/12/2020 19:09

So tempted to go to cinema next week despite the T&T net

I bet it’ll be empty.

TheOrchidKiller · 09/12/2020 19:16

If it's empty, Acorn it would be theoretically less risky, & quite enjoyable to actually watch a film in peace & quiet.

Orangeblossom77777 · 09/12/2020 19:24

I quite fancy going to this filmbath.org.uk/filmbath-2020-faqs
film festival but think it would be cold? I guess could take hot mulled wine or get some but not sure

Orangeblossom77777 · 09/12/2020 19:26

yes some of then start at 8pm so think will be too cold to be honest.

Jourdain11 · 09/12/2020 19:32

They've gone for some more hardcore antibiotics since my lungs are apparently crackling and I am no doubt getting on everyone's nerves by coughing continuously (but no longer newly, and not Covidly). Otherwise, I actually don't feel too bad. Just a bit tired and achey. Being away from the kids is quite restful, just as a one-off! Blush

Oooh, I read that "nurse's tale" thing and it was ick. Actually, my first thought was that Meghan Markle must be branching out into creative writing...

Just got a message from a mum friend, DD1 told her DD that I was in hospital. "Just think, it could be Covid, so look on the bright side." I had to hold myself back from saying ooooh, yes, lucky me, I count myself just SO fortunate to only have blood cancer, no spleen and a crappy immune system Hmm

I think DD2 should be an honorary AD. Perhaps we should have a Junior Section Wink

Oh my lord. She really said that? Some fucking people.
smallandimperfectlyformed · 09/12/2020 19:47

I read the nurse thing too and it is so annoying. I mean no disrespect to the doctors, nurses, paramedics, call controllers or other people who are in the NHS but I find the lionisation of people in healthcare so icky. I unfollowed a lot of doctors on Twitter a while ago, not just because they had different views on the validity of lockdown, but mainly because they really seemed to see themselves as demigods. All of the praise and thanks appeared to have gone to their heads!

I think so...everyone might rush in at the weekend though so perhaps a weeknight.

Re the outdoors film festival, I couldn’t!

Jourdain oh I had crackly lungs too, I know it’s horrible, I do feel for you Flowers
Are you allowed a steroid inhaler?

I read part of it and felt embarrassed. If I was doing recruitment and found any potential interviewee has engaged in social media in that way (or many others, see tearful insta videos) it would be an immediate rejection from me.

I ended up having some zzzzs on the sofa while DS1 gawped at youtube Grin

The evenings are feeling very long. DS1 needs to zone out when he gets in. We've got activities back on Mon/ Fri, but mid-week, there's not anything really worth the effort of prising him off screens for. Life is still feeling vacuous. I know they're having too much screen time, but my reserves on more assertive parenting (and internal motivation) are still very depleted and on subsistence level.

OP posts:
ISaySteadyOn · 09/12/2020 20:45

We binged Yonderland series 1 today and everyone was contented.

I think screen time balances out in summer when it isn't dark at 4 in the afternoon. Also, there is so much we have had taken from us that would normally be useful in winter. So I wouldn't worry about it.

Evenstar · 09/12/2020 20:56

Had a difficult day today, just feel like I am having to force myself to do everything and feel so discouraged at the thought of restrictions continuing.

I went into Tesco for a few items, and even though I saw another person with a lanyard I felt panicky and anxious and couldn’t stay long enough to browse some stocking filler gifts 🙁

Taswama · 09/12/2020 21:06

I had a good laugh at your DH telling the school to mind their own business @Jourdain11 . Funny how they rang you not him to complain about your childcare arrangements, isn't it?
Your DD2 sounds awesome too. You must be very proud!

Taswama · 09/12/2020 21:12

This is very outing but wanted to share:

Today the staff choir at my work met for the first time in person since March. We recorded some carols for the staff and our clients. The recording was outside but we had a run through inside first. People have said to me a few times how it will feel wrong / a bit scary being in a room with lots of people again, after so long hardly seeing anyone. It felt absolutely RIGHT. We were stood apart from each other but not really 2 metres. All together, sharing the joy of Christmas, and I blanked out the few people wearing masks.

Too many Some doctors have always seen themselves that way, all blasted Covid has done is validate it.

Nurses were rarely like it in my day but I think there are more of them that do since nursing has become a degree course. (All though there definitely were those up their own backside even then - 1970s)
