Naked opinions

What are your thoughts about a dad being naked in front of adult daughter (early 20s)? Not swanning around the house, but walking around bedroom after a shower, with daughter sitting on the bed chatting. Neither seem bothered by it. So ok I guess? (She would not do this herself btw - not even partially-dressed, being very private.)

Obviously🙄

I would have been mortified if my family wandered round with no clothes on. I don’t want to see jiggly and wobbly bits whilst I’m having breakfast.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 17/11/2020 09:50

Or even meat and 2 veg whilst having Sunday dinner😁

Pollynextdoor · 17/11/2020 09:51

Oh well you’re just making things up now being a bit silly.

MedusasBadHairDay · 17/11/2020 10:00

Both my parents would walk from the bathroom to the bedroom completely naked after a shower, and I had several conversations with my mum stood in the bedroom with her while she got dressed well into my twenties.

In my teens/twenties I'd never have dreamt of doing the same as them, but now I'm that parent who just doesn't care. My kids frequently talk to me while I'm naked and getting ready.

All entirely normal. Grin

@Pollynextdoor

But no one is saying you must be naked around your children on this thread or have i missed that? It’s just people saying what they personally feel comfortable with. Why is it not ok for me to say that you are weird for not wanting to be naked (I don’t think that by the way), but perfectly fine for lots of posters to say I am weird, it’s yuk or grim?

@formerbabe, no one is talking about walking around the supermarket naked here are they?

No you said "Still no one has given an explanation for why it’s so bad to see your parents naked other than YUK which isn’t that articulate."

Are feelings of discomfort about who they allow to see them naked or who they see naked really that complicated? Does it really need to be explained?

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 17/11/2020 10:18

‘Why is it so bad to see your parents naked?’

Little kids it’s fine.

Teens become shyer and more modest. Maybe they don’t want to see their dad’s cock bouncing about? Or their mums boobs?

Maybe they feel embarrassed but don’t want to say anything about it.

I think it’s grim that your dh thinks it’s ok to be fully naked in front of an adult dd. And my concern would be why he thinks it is even OK. It’s not ‘natural’ it has elements of sexual overtones however you try and look at it. He doesn’t need to have his dick out in front of her so why does he choose to do so.

It makes my flesh crawl.

LizaE · 17/11/2020 10:19

Why are you, op, implying he's the odd one and she might be uncomfortable? If she was, it's for her to stay out of your bedroom while he's showering and naked.

SkedaddIe · 17/11/2020 10:24

My thinking is that the people who have discomfort with nudity are socialised to think that way.

If the only time you ever see a penis is in an intimate sexual situation then you're going to correlate a penis with sex that's why it's eww/inappropriate in any other context.

A parallel example is that breastfeeding in public is far more acceptable in Ghana than in the UK because breasts are objectified, sexualised and censored more in the UK than in Ghana.

Bodies aren't weird, our thinking is.

GeidiPrimes · 17/11/2020 10:27

I think it's a bit grim. My own parents would sometimes use their own nudity (and mine) to frighten/cause discomfort/punish when I was a small child. I did not have the language to ask them to stop. I then grew up with difficulties in setting my own bodily autonomy.

I realise I'm projecting somewhat.

Nikhedonia · 17/11/2020 10:32

GeidiPrimes that's awful. I'm so sorry you experienced that Thanks

MushMonster · 17/11/2020 10:33

If she is not bothered, then no issue.
I do walk around naked if I am changing or came out of bath, but it is daughter in my case. Not sure how I would feel about a son.

formerbabe · 17/11/2020 10:36

Totally disagree, my parents were quite liberal. I saw them naked...nothing sinister going on. Nothing abusive has ever happened to me. I thought it was absolutely revolting though.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 17/11/2020 10:40

But what else is a penis for? Apart from sex and weeing? It doesn’t have another purpose. So it is sexual

nosswith · 17/11/2020 10:41

Not an issue as long as the daughter can leave the room if she wishes.

Pollynextdoor · 17/11/2020 10:42

@formerbabe, seems to me you are also projecting as you felt uncomfortable or revolted as you put it around your parents nakedness. So perhaps your parents should have picked up on that and respected your feelings? What most posters describe on this thread are situations where nakedness are not forced onto their children. For example, if my son does not want to see me naked, he can stop coming into the bathroom while I shower or knock on my bedroom door. I am not fixing my nakedness into my children or demanding that they see me naked.

You might not be but a pp upthread was talking about how they pop down to the kitchen for a snack with nothing on. That's just gratuitous. She could put some pants on.

Pollynextdoor · 17/11/2020 10:46

@formerbabe, I must have missed that post. I don’t think that is what majority posters are describing though and certainly not what OP is describing.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 17/11/2020 10:46

Gratuitous! Yes!!! Just the word l was looking for.

I was thinking self indulgent, but gratuitous is much better!

goldielockdown2 · 17/11/2020 10:56

Not acceptable in this house, but OP he's your partner so you would know if this is normal behaviour for your family, you've been part of it for long enough! The two of you must've raised your DD to not bat an eyelid at her dad roaming round nude.

user1493494961 · 17/11/2020 10:57

I think it's odd that the DD is such a private person but is happy to go into her Father's/parents' bedroom when he is in the shower just to have a chat.

GeidiPrimes · 17/11/2020 11:16

Thanks Nikhedonia, it shored up a lifetime of terrible mental health and addictions which I'm only just coming to terms with at nearly 50.

Gratuitous definitely describes it. I get the rage when I hear about nudist families enforcing their beliefs on children, if my parents had been nudists I'd have been too frightened of them to say, "Er, no. I don't want to get my kit off in front of you and all these other weirdos naked strangers."

It's not just me either - my MIL took my late DH to a nudist beach accidentally, and he was very distressed by it all. Kids aren't stupid, they know that adults getting naked together (usually) means sex. Horrible to put a child through that, cos the adults like to feel "free" or whatever.

wendywoopywoo222 · 17/11/2020 12:13

That would of all been normal in my house growing up.

As it was her dads bedroom I'm sure she would of left if she found it uncomfortable.

Pollynextdoor · 17/11/2020 12:16

@GeidiPrimes, I am also sorry for your experiences as a child, but if your parents as you write used their nudity to frighten and punish you, that is separate to simply having a laid back relationship to nudity. I wouldn’t say I am a nudist and would not go to a nudist beach, but I love to swim naked in the sea and also know nudist families and there really isn’t anything sexual about it. That is your associations.
I will put a disclaimer that I am not British and grew up in a country much more relaxed around naked bodies. I had for example never come across children not being naked on the beach or dislike of public breastfeeding before I moved to the U.K.

woodhill · 17/11/2020 12:40

I'm really not keen on it and wanted some privacy when my dc were growing up. Certainly wouldn't want them coming into my bedroom or the Bathroom if I was naked.
